This based on the Scopes Monkey Trial and in real life John Scopes was asked by the ACLU to be part of a test case and the people of Dayton Tennessee were actually hoping to attract the media circus that came to town. Scopes actually admitted that he could not actually remember if actually ever taught Darwin's theory of evolution and his students testimony had to be coached. The people who wrote the freely admitted that they fictionalized the event as an allegory for McCarthyism.

One of the men who wrote the play Robert Edwin Lee also co-wrote the play Auntie Mame and was married to Janet Webb who voiced the character of Judy Jetson among many other Hanna Barbara characters.

If the outside of the courthouse looks familiar it was used among others in To Kill a Mockingbird, and most famously as the courthouse In Back To The Future.

One of the screenwriters Nedrick Young won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for The Defiant Ones (1958) another Stanley Kubrick movie but his most famous and lasting contribution is that he has a story credit for Jailhouse Rock (1957).

In real life the people of Dayton, Tennessee did not act like the people in Hillsboro all the people who came their said they were treated to the finest of Southern hospitality.

If you want to check out anything more with Fredric March I would recommend Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1931). For the movie March had to wear so much makeup he almost developed toxic shock (Most makeups back then were copper and lead based). March ended winning an Oscar for his performance which for a horror movie is like catching a unicorn.

This movie just has talent stacked in top of talent.

Recently in my state, a fist fight broke out during a debate about teaching the Bible in schools. The fight was not because they didn't want it taught but because they couldn't agree on which translation should be taught. 🤬

When MGM remade Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in 1941 with Spencer Tracy they bought the rights to the 1931 film, withdrew it from circulation and destroyed what copies they could find so that it wouldn't compete with their film. It was believed to be a lost film until 1967 when someone found a copy.

It's a real shame they didn't have a makeup Oscar back then because it took a lot of work to transform Frederic March into something grotesque for this movie too

You made my Friday night with this. Watching two titons of the golden age of Hollywood go at each other is always a treat. Tracy and March were outstanding. I always thought this was one of Gene Kelly's finest performances. Amazing 100 years later we are still fighting this battle in some schools.

What’s worse is that Wally Westmore and Frank Pierce who did the makeup for Frankenstein the same year weren’t even given screen credits for the work.

This brings me back to my militant atheist phase in my 20s, I spent so much time debating creationists. Now in my late 30s, I'm much more willing to live and let live, I don't begrudge anyone their deeply held religious beliefs even though I still don't think any of it is *true*. I still don't hold any respect for creationism, mind you, when your personal religious belief requires you to reject what is plainly obvious from every angle of scientific inquiry that ceases to be just a personal belief I can understand.

Brady is based on William Jennings Bryan, a Democratic politician, Drummond on Clarence Darrow, a famous lawyer, and the reporter was based on journalist and essayist H.L. Mencken.

Stanley Kramer was also the director of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

Jack Lemon did both a remake of 12 Angry Men featuring 20 minutes of more script cut from the 50s film and a remake of this. Both co-star George C. Scott.

The teacher in this became a household name in a couple years as the husband in Bewitched. In his movie before this he suffered a severe back injury that eventually led him to quit acting due to the pain and painkiller addiction but he became a lobbyist for the homeless setting up homeless programs around the country while he was bedridden before his death.

2 days in a row you guys drop two of my favourite films. If you tell me you gonna watch “Copenhagen” next I’ll have to be checked for happily delusional disorder.

Incase you don’t know this isn’t a real recreation of the scopes trial that’s why all the names were changed. Bertrum cates = John scopes Henry Drummond = clanarce Darrow Matthew Brady = William Jennings Brian. Ek hornbeck = HL menkin

Scottish comdian frankie boyle once tried to walk through a glagow park with his sick baby and the a park was reserved for some christian thing..... he went to walk through anyway and he was stopped by a christian who told him he had to take the long way around. Frankie apparopaitley barged past him and then he shoulted something he said he's always been proud of "jesus would have f*cking hated you"

If anyone is interested in learning about the real Scopes Monkey Trial I heartily recommend: Summers of Gods by Edward J. Larson Keeping the Faith by Brenda Wineapple

The person who is singing “Give me That Ole Time Religion” is singer Leslie Uggams who many will known as Blind Al in the Deadpool movies.

Before it became a Nextstar radio station WGN in Chicago used to play the actual Scopes Monkey trial on certain anniversaries because they came to fame because they broadcast the trial live to most of the country. It is wild to be able to actually hear Wm Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow in action.

I saw Inherit the Wind at the Pasadena Playhouse during the most recent writers’ strike, starring the great Alfred Molina as Drummond. Of course, he gave an extraordinary performance, and the cast was stacked with other excellent actors just waiting for their existing projects to start back up. It is a great play and a remarkable night in the theater.

Everyone loves Tracy, Kelly and March in this, but the quiet MVP here is Dick York. This movie was four years before his best-known role as Darrin on Bewitched. His performance here makes me want to seek out other things he's done because he was clearly an amazing actor.

Erin Mileur

A good movie to check out is They Came to Codura (1959) besides Dick York it stars Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth.

The film was nominated for 4 Academy Awards, lead actor for Spencer Tracy, adapted screenplay, cinematography and editing. There were three more adaptations, after this film, 1965 with Melvyn Douglas and Ed Begly, 1988 with Jason Robards and Kurt Douglas, 1999 with Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott.

Biff McKeldin

I love this movie, but its portrait of Matthew Harrison Brady is somewhat unfair to William Jennings Bryan who was actually a progressive in his day. He really *did* fight for the working class. Sadly though, his shift from political progressivism to fundamentalist Christianity tarnished his reputation. Given that the core teachings of Christianity are decidedly left leaning, I'm sure he didn't see a contradiction in his shift. Blind devotion to dogma of any kind -- religious or political -- never ends well. :( A suggestion for future watches: JUDGMENT AT NUREMBURG (1961). Another Stanley Kramer/Spencer Tracy collaboration (and my personal favorite).

Ingemar Svensson

The honorary colonel title given to Brady is a similar type of title that Colonel Sanders of KFC fame had. Not the exact type since this was fictional but a similar type of honorary title.

Of course the real life lawyers were Clarence Darrow played by Spencer Tracy and 3-time US Presidential Candidate William Jennings Bryant the Nebraska US House rep who ran on easy money populism in 1896, 1900 and 1908 and lost... He advocated for 8-hour work days, a minimum wage, the right to form unions, women's suffrage, BUT was FOR prohibition and opposed teaching evolution so was a weird mix of what would now be BErnie Sanders and the Religious Right and the trial DID kill him- collapsing and dying right afterwards...

Catholics privately snicker at Protestants- when we disagree amongst ourselves we're forced to decide on dogma. When Protestants disagree they form yet ANOTHER sub sect based on some minutia involving a few phrases in one section of the Bible that contradicts another one... there is a classic joke from Emo Phillips about religious hate: Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, “Don’t do it!” He said, “Nobody loves me.” I said, “God loves you. Do you believe in God?” He said, “Yes.” I said, “Are you a Christian or a Jew?” He said, “A Christian.” I said, “Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?” He said, “Protestant.” I said, “Me, too! What franchise?” He said, “Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?” He said, “Northern Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region.” I said, “Me, too!” Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912.” I said, “Die, heretic!” And pushed him over.
