omg this so hilarious! this was also on the how did this get made? podcast, this movie is one of many michael douglas messes with the wrong woman and finds out

I haven't even pressed play yet, but somebody please please buy The Net, the one with Sandra Bullock, as a double feature of hilarious early internet depictions of what being online could look like! (Also, The Net is a genuinely good thriller and I will die on that hill, but this one is so much more ridiculously silly, and I really need this. Just, what a blast!)

Youtalkingtome

We were on the floor with the "Lawnmower Man" vibe of the VR climax scene. This movie was a blast.

I was hollering when I saw the stick figures with a face post-it for the first time (if I even remember correctly?? all I recall is that it was so stupid in the best way possible). I can't wait to watch this with you guys and read the comments!

Youtalkingtome

Also, the only thing I remember from the trailer for The Net (because of SNL at the time) was that, like this, Dennis Miller was also in it.

Michael Douglas's lack of libido control was a cottage industry in Hollywood for a while.

Erin Mileur

During a test screening for this movie several men in the audience expressed the opinion that Demi Moore could sexually harass them anytime she wanted. What makes it funny is that sentiment was being expressed by several gay men in the audience.

Actually the podcast You Must Remember This did an episode about Disclosure as well as Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct as part of their erotic 80s and 90s seasons.

Youtalkingtome

To be fair, in her erotic scene with Douglas, she was distractingly gorgeous.

It's crazy to me that the same person who wrote Jurassic Park wrote this novel also. Michael Crichton ruled the 90s

-I never liked this movie, as the premise (the tech industry part at least) was so thin. -I grew up in Austin and saw this in the theater in 1994 IN Austin, and when the wife made that comment ABOUT Austin, the whole theater made noises...

Paul T Hewes

He made ER as well, and the only reason the hit show "The Pitt" isnt an ER continuation is because his heirs/estate wanted his name to be more credited than the new people wanted to give.

Youtalkingtome

That certainly didn't age well. People freaking LOVE Austin.

Matt CN

Awesome reaction! There is a popular commentary about this movie demonstrating the fear of female bosses coming into the workplace.

Lana Gorgeous

Oh another one you guys forgot, earlier than Basic Instinct was 9 1/2 weeks with a young Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger. That was the talk when I was in my early 20's in college :)

Paul T Hewes

I miss the 80s and 1990s Austin I grew up in. The Austin that is "Austin" right now is a whole different place. I guess you can say that about any place though...

Youtalkingtome

I haven't seen it, but yes, famously in the erotic thriller category.

Lola Lirola

Wait, I just realized... Is this the Metaverse??? Did Zuckerberg watch this movie?? Is this what inspired him? (Also, throughout the sequence, I had to imagine Michael Douglas awkwardly doing steps in place and hand gestures in that silly room, and I was laughing so hard.)

Same genre as the cable TV schlock "Silk Stalkings",,,

I worked for a French global insurer and at an in house meeting in Provence almost all of the French male execs had non-employee "not their wife, just friends" attending and literally sitting on their laps after a few drinks while the Americans, Brits and Australians looked on in Puritan shock...Still- non of it involved co-workers....

The conversation at 18:20 is quite real. When I worked at a major consulting firm in the early 90s right out of college, one of the Senior Managers was up for Equity Partner for the 3rd year in a row after being told twice before that if he just brought in a little more revenue he would make the cut. The guy who was passed over asked the lower level Partner who was his boss to level with him about whether he would ever get promoted and was told no. Four weeks later he was gone and the Partner who was blunt with him was almost fired by HIS Senior Partner boss who said "Did you realize we could have milked him for 2 more years before he would have grown the balls to walk?...I should fire YOU for being so stupid...."

The FRIEND has GOT to be the female engineer across the way- J sae this when it came out but don't remember the ending...

Body Heat from 1981 starring Kathleen Turner and William Hurt came before all of the films that you mentioned and it was better than most of them. A young Ted Danson is one of the co-stars. And a young Mickey Rourke even makes an appearance. It's such an interesting combination of erotic thriller and film noir I think you all would enjoy it.

Youtalkingtome

100%, this movie was written by a man trying to explain how sexual harassment works. I appreciate the effort (it's about power imbalance, it doesn't have to be intentional to make someone uncomfortable, etc.), there is definitely some REALLY heavy "look how hard it is to be a man, too" going on here.

Actuarial Lurker

It's all about consent.... when I worked at a large consulting firm, the junior accountant consultants on the other floor worked until 8 or 9 pm every night and they were all sleeping with each other since they had nobody to socialize with and a lot of them wound up getting married....

I do have some nostalgia for The Net

I can’t believe I haven’t watched this till now. I heard it more as a joke during the filming of Liberty Heights because Levinson took this job to keep the Homicide crew working (the showrunner wrote the screenplay) while they waited to hear if the show would go past the first batch of episodes. They joked if Levinson had gotten the Liberty Heights script done quicker he wouldn’t have had to make this.

Jonathan

Michael Douglas’s son in this was Frasiers son on Frasier and the junior copywriter Johnny Mathis on Mad Men
