Roarke was a very hard role to cast, because so many actors were terrified that torturing a blind Audrey Hepburn would take over their whole public image. Luckily, Alan Arkin managed to avoid that and went on to an extremely varied career.

Omg can’t wait to watch! Alan Arkin’s jump scare in this (and the whole climax scene) is one for the ages.

Excellent choice!!!

Arkin's jump scare is iconic. When I saw this in a theatre full of people everybody screamed. Another Hepburn film you should check out is A NUN'S STORY. She is in every scene in the film and gives a brilliant performance.

I was just lying here thinking if I’d ever fall asleep tonight. You know, that restless feeling. Then I saw that an Insomnia Cinema had posted. Haven’t seen this movie in years but remember it was well worth the watch. Starting in three, two, one …

Yeah, it'll be a cinch to fall asleep, at night, in the dark, after watching this movie 😜. Good luck.

I was going to suggest this film of Audrey’s to you after finishing Roman Holiday with you guys last night! You were wondering if she had worked with Hitchcock and she didn’t but this is pretty darn close thriller wise! Alan Arkin was truly terrifying and Audrey was brilliant. I always wondered why they had his character in dark glasses even at night. Maybe just for extra creepy scary factor. Another great Henry Mancini soundtrack! The model with the doll in the beginning was flying from Montreal to New York, not from Paris so maybe security checks between Canada and the USA at airports weren’t that strict in the 1960’s.

If you think this is fun, you should see the stage version. It's a whole other thing when you're sitting in the dark with Susie and you don't know where either she or Roat is, or watching Roat drag himself across the stage with that knife with just the refrigerator light on. That final confrontation, when done well, is like nothing else you've seen in a theatre. It's like you're there. One of the best thrillers ever made for the stage.

I tIhought it might be coming, but it was SO much more shocking when it actually happened. Great scene!

Youtalkingtome

Ah, of course! Thanks for clarifying that! The score was incredibly effective.

Youtalkingtome

I really hope I get a chance someday to see a good company stage it.

Alan Arkin is so scary in this movie it easily holds up against most modern horror villains. Put him right up next to Hannibal Lecter, he is so sadistic without the need for gore. The contrast against Audrey’s sweet Suzy who is so vulnerable just makes him that much more creepy. Props to all the other cast for playing that subtlety in their reactions to how unnerving he is.

Charade with Hepburn and Cary Grant is one of the great Hitchcock films that Hitchcock didn't make. Also I drove to Canada several times in the 70s. No passport needed and very few questions asked.

Re: Gloria, she's probably the most "sixties" thing in a movie that's quite timeless, because she's a monster at the beginning because... her parents are (gasp!) getting divorced!! Scandalous! That's why she's acting out, and why she steals things, and why she gets interested in crime and espionage, and why she freezes out when she sees "not-husband men" in the house. She's a very interesting time capsule character, kind of like Sally in Mad Men. As for Hepburn, she's *incredible* in this movie. And the plot is so tight, and the "lights out" final act is genuinely innovative genius! Such a great pick of a movie! Oh edit to add: I'm with you that Sam is a jerk, and Suzie should leave him, lol!

Movie theaters at the time were encouraged to cut their lights to the legal limit during the blackout scene to fully immerse the audience in the darkness.

Youtalkingtome

I didn't even recognize Jack Weston from his many roles, including Dirty Dancing. What a cast!

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, Gloria is definitely a "don't get divorced, because your kids will become sadists" cautionary tale. Yeah, I'm not sold on Sam as a great husband. He is performatively loving and incredibly controlling, a MAJOR red flag.

On Broadway, Arkin's role was played by Quentin Tarantino. I'd have give my left hand to see that live!

Chemical Em

ultimate twist sam set this whole thing up to prove disabled people can do anything! his attitude toward her disability got super weird lol
