There is an early episode of ER called Love's Labors Lost that would make a great companion to this episode.

The very best of Bradley Whitford. And that’s a tall order to crack.

I really do think, when Sorkin learned that the show is cancelled, he must have started working on an ending that hits hard. If they are getting cancelled anyway, there is no reason for him to pull punches. He can show that some hard writing, some experimental things, can work in a show, a mostly-comedy series, like Studio 60. I imagine him putting together the four-parter storyline, as a maniac of a wordsmith he is, working his ass off until he got exactly what he wanted. Giving you very sorkiny gut-punches, emotional roller coasters, tension, and funny jokes interspread, just to lighten the drama and make the dramatic moments hit even tougher. I think he just basically wanted to go really Lion in the Winter (as he quoted in the west wing, too): 'You fool! As if the way one fell down mattered.' 'When the fall is all there is, it matters' If Sorkin loses his show, he will show THEM how a giant loses a show.
