The weird thing about this episode (besides, you know, everything) is that Dawn was initially conceived as being around 10 years old, but then Whedon was so impressed by Michelle Trachtenberg's audition that he decided to make the character a teenager...except there wasn't any time to adjust this script to account for that, which means she often comes off as ridiculously childish, plus Joyce insisting she can't be home alone doesn't make much sense. And that first impression was very hard for a lot of fans to shake so that you'll still find a lot of people calling her annoying and whiny, even though they quickly started writing for the new version of the character.

jimmy2k4o .

The crazy guy said "currds and waye" to dawn. in BUffy 3x22 when faith and buffy share a dream she says "miles to go, little miss muffet counting down from 730" 730 is 365x2 aka 2 years. season 3 to season 5, basicaly faith was saying 2 years until little miss muffet arrives, and now we know who little miss muffet is. Remember that slayers can have prophetic dreams. this show is so smuch smarter on closer analysis.

Suzanne Whyte

They said Willow would reverse Harmony’s invitation so that’s not a problem but Harmony will no doubt be back. The show loves to bring her in for some extra comedy.

Jontor11

Great one guys! One of the best things this show did was to make Harmony a vampire. Before she was just a dumb mean girl, now she is a vampire that sucks at being mean, and I think it's hilarious. :-)

Leah W.

I don't know what it is about the scene outside the magic shop between Dawn and that crazy guy, but I love it. It really grips me the way he says "You don't belong here." Maybe because that was what I was thinking the whole episode lol. I've tried to find some sort of clip of it on YouTube, but alas I'm forced to rewatch it by either watching the episode or through reation channels.

Jontor11

And in the dream finale of S4, Buffy looks at the clock that says 7:30, but Tara says "that clock is completely wrong".

Lyla

I believe this isn't an especially highly rated episode generally, but I love it. It's funny, it's light, it's eerie. It introduces Dawn and the mystery around her incredibly well, and of course it brings back one of the funniest recurring characters in Harmony. That cut from Giles asking who would want something so tacky, to Harmony excitedly addressing her minions, makes me laugh every time. So much fun.

I do agree she comes across as a bit too young in some of how she's written in this episode, but honestly I also think I can just about buy most of it - especially details like her sisterly squabbles with Buffy and her crush on Xander. As someone who's around young teens quite a lot of the time, I think people can sometimes slightly underestimate just how young they are and often behave. Also, as they live in Sunnydale, I think it's pretty fair of Joyce to not want Dawn to be left alone. As demonstrated in this episode, things can go wrong very quickly with the supernatural around!

Warning: people get really spoiler-y with season 5. It’s excitement, people want to let you in on clues you might have missed. But just be a bit cautious it can make plot points more obvious and take away the fun of speculating

Harmony is one of my favorite characters in the whole show, because they nail her mean-girl-in-over-her-head and the actress has clearly so much fun with it! Just like, the *tone*. She strikes the perfect tone of comedy every time.

danzthename

I love this episode! But then I also love Harmony so

Lyla

Isn't she the best?!

danzthename

You guys are too observant for the Dawn gaslighting. It's a bit of a tradition and all in fun. I've seen some reactors really fall for it and it's pretty funny.

Gail Hislop

Mort getting staked by the 🦄 horn is poetic justice 🤣

Youtalkingtome

Serious;y, the actor playing the crazy guy is putting in an award-worthy performance for like a minute. He sells it.

Erica

I have bullet points for this episode lol -harmony's hair is so good this episode. Im legit jealous. -i always thought it was weird that they went from laughing about harmony to immediately trating her as though she was as dangerous as the master or angelus. I get that there's a huge difference between her with am invitation vs without, but it made it hard for to gauge how much I should be worried. Maybe it's just a me thing 🤷 -to peel back the curtain a tiny bit, dawn was originally written to be 12, but they liked Michelle Trachtenburg so much that they aged her up! They unfortunately didn't rewrite much of what was already written, so she acts way younger than she should for a few episodes -a lot of people dislike dawn because she's moody and annoying. Hello? Almost all teens are moody and annoying. With the addition of being a child of divorce, and being near death (not her own, but deaths in general) all the time, she's probably internalized a lot of stress. The difference between her and buffy was that buffy HAD to grow out of the phase fast in order to stay alive. So as a formerly obnoxious and moody 14 year old who didn't know how to deal with the inner turmoil of being alive, i relate to Dawn SO HARD. -Joss Whedon wasn't allowed to be alone with Michelle Trachtenburg on set. Piece of trash he was

Have you guys ever seen the Addams Family movies? She's in those. That character cracks me up too.

Season 5 is said to have the most consistently good episodes or at least the fan favorite vibes through out the entire thing so you guys should have a good time. I’m someone who also enjoyed season 4 even though there was issues going on with it, but they ramp it up this season in a positive way.

Carl Wilson

Mercedes McNab must have been so excited when she first got invited back as a vampire - aside from a couple of scenes when she took over as Queen Bee-atch because Cordelia was in exile over Xander, Harmony was a pretty thankless role, and then it turned into this juicy feast!

Carl Wilson

Maybe not a spoiler, but very spoilery.

Carl Wilson

Yes, there are people who say this. Those people seem to have missed season 3.

Kt B

I adore Anya in this episode! I also dig Dawn and Harmony, and Tara has absolutely stolen my heart, but Anya’s board game scene is one of my absolute favorites.

Kt B

How did he get suckered into being a minion to begin with? Did she seduce him as a human and turn him, or did some buddy convince him as a vampire that joining the gang would be better than being solo?

Youtalkingtome

We were definitely a little confused at the comments from last week lmao

Giuseppe D

You guys are so smart when it comes to theories about what's going on, lol. Not saying you've figured it out but you're asking all the right questions, which shows how well you "get" the show. Really enjoying your reactions!

Carl Wilson

Btw I don't think the minions' question was so unreasonable - why can't we eat Dawn if the Slayer *thinks we have her? There is an answer, basically that the target might demand proof that the hostage is alive. But that's more or less never happened on this show and usually the villains get *more trouble by keeping the hostage alive than they would if they'd killed them. The show started with a hostage that was turned into a vampire - remember Jesse? - and that was arguably a better plan than most of them have had since.

Jamie Morgan

Rot13 is your friend, everyone!!!

Jamie Morgan

That is such a Harmony move, to have basically a stake hanging around your lair and not realise it because it's a unicorn's horn!

Tina

Excellent reaction!!

Tina

Agree with Kimba.

Roland

I learned something today. 🙂 > A sock hop was an informal, sponsored dance for teenagers in mid-20th-century North America, mainly during the 1940s and 1950s. The name came from the rule that dancers had to take off their hard-soled shoes and dance in their socks to protect the polished wooden floors of school gymnasiums. <

Suzanne Whyte

I'm imagining lots of sock hop related injuries as teenagers slid all over the polished wooden floors while attempting to dance in socks.

Roland

So I'm not going to name names right now. Firstly because it's easy enough to go back and check, secondly because there was no direct malice intended. And thirdly because I share some culpability of my own, I could and should have resisted checking a detail that I assumed was peripheral. It turned out that it wasn't peripheral. So due to some comments in last week's thread, I'm already spoiled on (what is probably) a key element of the Dawn mystery. I'm hoping it's a short-lived thing and I can enjoy the rest of the show as intended. If it isn't, I'll be increasingly upset and disappointed because I can no longer enjoy my own speculation journey. We were warned that Buffy fans can get...enthusiastic...and that's okay. Enthusiasm is good. Passion is great. But please don't let that enthusiasm and passion undermine other people's enjoyment. So please stop posting hints, spoilers, avenues of thought, any of that stuff. This is an amazing reactor community, full of interesting and smart people, you'll quickly appreciate that if you check out other show threads (and you should!). Be great members of this community, it's worth it. In this community even first-timers to a show try to avoid posting speculations because they appreciate there's a danger they might be correct, and that would be both rude to our hosts and to others in the audience. Enjoy J&K's reactions, and let's all enjoy the ride together unspoiled. Thank you.

Tina

Honestly, I really don't know why I always slump in S4. It really does have good episodes, I love that they let all the characters grow up and find their path, it has Hush, and I like Riley, plus Spike gets to become a regular. But as a whole, I jump over S4 the most during rewatches (with one exception, which I won't spoil). Maybe it's because Riley is so incredibly boring, even if he's a great bf for Buffy. Maybe it's because I don't want Oz to leave, even though I want Tara there (honestly, there's just too little of her, more Tara is always better, same goes for Anya). Maybe it's that the Faith episodes are just so hard to watch. Or maybe its because Maggie and Adam are just not good enough villains. In any case, sandwiched as it is between S3 and S5, it just doesn't have a chance, despite actually being really good. I'm glad I mostly rewatched with you, I only skipped Faith and the sex house episodes - it made me remember how awesome the season is for character development and growth. Still I'm glad we're here now. 😌

Tina

Interesting. I think that the Faith episodes, along with Hush and Restless are the strongest of S4. To each his own I guess...

Oh yes, the Faith eps are excellent! I just can't deal with Faith going this far off the rails. I love her a lot, and it's almost physically painful for me to watch her hurt people like this. It’s all people’s opinions so there’s not a right or wrong answer imo. I personally love season 3 too. I like the vibe more in season 5 overall but I’m sure it depends upon who your favorite characters are.

Jontor11

K & J. Yes, Dawn has been added as a regular character, but you might have missed that also Anya is added this season.

vala p

I didn't realize sock hops weren't still a thing. We had them when I was in high school but my school was small and poor so it was like we were living in the 50s

vala p

Tara being the only one to know/ use the owner of the Magic Box's name is just proof that she's just so much nicer than all the other Scoobies.

Addams Family Values is so underrated.

So excited for you guys to experience this season. The writing is 10/10.

Yup. We got in the habit of using rot13 to discuss spoiler-y things in The Good Place comments sections, it may be wise to do the same here for those so inclined.
