The woman who did the costumes Edith Head is the inspiration for Edna in the Incredibles.

Erin Mileur

The woman who plays Grace Kelly's mother Jessie Royce Landis later played Cary Grants mother in North by Northwest.

After you watched the Pink Panther recently I was going to suggest this as another great cat burglar film. I adore this one. Grace Kelly is sublime and she and Cary Grant have great chemistry and I love the wonderful actress Joyce Royce Landis as Frances’ mother, she’s a hoot as a character. And it’s all shot in one of my favourite places - the French Riviera. A few years later that would become Grace’s home after marrying Prince Rainier of Monaco. That first chase scene along those windy roads was filmed from helicopters! I’ve driven on them several times and the scenery is spectacular but yeh, also kind of dangerous! Another film with Edith Head’s gorgeous costume design and a nomination for an Oscar!

Another Cary Grant movie to consider is Penny Serenade. It is his first Oscar nomination. It's not glamorous but it might be the best role of his career.

I'm personally not a fan of driving on twisty mountain roads. I spent a precarious late night on them in the Colorado Rockies. I didn't enjoy it!

Fun fact about my life: i once saw this movie on a tinder date and fell asleep. Which was embarrassing bc seeing the movie was my choice (a local theater i love has different themed weeks, this week had been cary grant movies). We didn't go out again. I jjust hope i didn't snore 😂

Princess Grace was driving along such a road when she had a stroke and lost control of her car and plunged 100 feet down the mountainside. She died after a second more severe stroke in the hospital.

Erin Mileur

Since you mentioned Vertigo if you haven’t seen I would heartily recommend it.

The only movie I've seen with Grace Kelly is Rear Window. Jim Hobart was right when he said in the Season 1 Mad Men episode "Shoot" that Betty Draper looked like Grace Kelly...

Gail Hislop

yes I am well aware of that tragedy and it is all the more chilling when you see her driving so fast along those coastal roads in the movie.

Thank you so much for picking this, I nearly bought it myself. Can't wait to watch it with the guys.

Youtalkingtome

Oh no! We've all been on bad tinder dates lol. That's a really charming story actually!

Youtalkingtome

I've never heard of that! Have to check that one out

Skinny_Obelix

Sad fact, Grace Kelly got killed in a car accident when she crashed 900 meters from the place where they're driving here in this movie.

Great reaction guys. Cary Grant having great chemistry with anyone is so true! He was actually in two other Hitchcock films : Suspicion in 1941 and Notorious in 1945. You guys definitely have to do Notorious for your next Hitchcock. The pairing of Grant and Ingrid Bergman is a must see. I also wouldn’t be mad if you did his Shadow of a Doubt from 1942 as well! More people need to know about that film and Teresa Wright!

This is one of those "I can't believe I've never seen this" movies for me. For many years I used to go to Cannes for work, sometimes two and three times a year, and it was really fun to see it from a much earlier era. The Carlton Hotel, where they were all staying, is still one of the most high-end and glamorous hotels there, and it looks largely the same today (or at least eight years ago, which was about the last time I was there). As for the two leads - you're spot on. Who WOULDN'T have chemistry with those two unbelievably good-looking and charismatic people?

Clare Manion

This is movie is absurdly fabulous - and I mean that in the best way possible. While watching, I couldn’t help but think that Grace Kelly often plays the same character (in what I’ve seen anyway - Dial M, High Society, and a couple others). She’s the society girl who’s assumed to be dumb and/or helpless, but then proves herself to be one of the smartest, most capable people in the movie… I suppose if one had to be type-cast as anything, I certainly wouldn’t be mad about that kind of role.

Youtalkingtome

She is consistently fantastic. I agree, she is often cast in similar roles, but man, is she great at it.

Youtalkingtome

The locations in this film were incredibly beautiful.

Have you seen the Mel Brooks movie "High Anxiety"? It's an incredibly funny spoof of Vertigo which is on par with Young Frankenstein...

Actuarial Lurker

The Birds is probably my favorite Hitchcock film other than Rear Window. I actually did not like Psycho- it was just OK, probably because it had been spoiled....this film here was very well done. Fantastic cinematography

Actuarial Lurker

She has the same type of characterization in Rear Window- spoiled rich girl who proves herself

Actuarial Lurker

Brigette Auber who played Daneille is still alive at age 101...

Actuarial Lurker

10,000 Francs in 1955 was only worth $US 28.57 back then which would be about $360 now, so he was trying to appear a rube when he dropped the chip down her dress at the roulette wheel

stingo

definitely consider Arsenic & Old Lace if you want another top-tier Cary Grant film. it matches Bringing Up Baby for fast-paced comedy
