There was literally a franchise about a living mannequin. Teenage boys made Kelly LeBrock on their PC. Hey, the werewolf is playing basketball, and he can dunk! And so much Guttenberg!

Erica

Highly recommend Teen Witch. It's an absolutely insane movie, and that's coming from the person who commissioned Drop Dead Fred 😂

Peggy G

Real Genius, people!!! Get voting, they'll love it!

Lola Lirola

Is it the Fairuza Balk, Tim Curry one?!? If so, that had such a grip on my childhood, and also, um, between that and Labyrinth, it explains a few things of how I turned out! 😅😅

Erica

No, i think the closest thing to a famous actor who's in the movie is Robin Lively, blake lively's sister

Courtney

My babysitter growing up was OBSESSED with Teen Witch. I saw it against my will so many times. That and Teen Wolf which I loved and wish was an option here. Maybe they’ve already seen it?

Lola Lirola

Man, the description of the decade hilariously highlights how *much* everyone was on drugs when they were writing!!

fire12wife

OMG! Six Pack is the movie I wanted to purchase. but couldn't find it on any streaming platform! I absolutely LOVE that movie, Kenny Rogers is so great in it! Erin Gray, Anthony Michael Hall. and a gorgeous 18 year old Diane Lane also star in it! It's one my family watched all the time when I was growing up!!

that girl

Lola, you're thinking of Worst Witch

Clare Manion

Lol, brilliant category! I don’t think I’ve seen any of these (not all the way through at least), but they all sound like a lot of fun! Had to vote for Back to School - it was largely shot here at UW Madison :)

Nick Stark

Stakeout and Back to School are two standouts. If I had to choose a specific one it would definitely be Stakeout. 80’s Action Comedy at its finest ❤️

CK in ZH

Movies from my ute! Flash Gordon, Real Genius and Night of the Comet for me. You can tell I love comedy with those choices. My father was an old school movie goer (back in the '40s when he and his sister would go to a double or triple feature of serials), and he loved Flash Gordon, as does my mother. Plus, you cannot enjoy Ted or Ted 2 to the fullest without watching Sam Jones as Flash. Go Flash, Go! Brian Blessed (my first exposure) and Timothy Dalton (same) are great.

Cosmic Slice

Real Genius wins hands down on this....but Earth Girls Are Easy should have been on here. The most 80s movie there is, lol

Cosmic Slice

Real Genius should be the winner on this...so funny and so very 80s.

arthistorian

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun! (Dance movie with early Sarah Jessica Parker, Helen Hunt, and Shannon Doherty)

Patrick

Six Pack will require a DVD purchase, but so worth it. A routine from my childhood weekend schedule, if I was at Granny's, I was watching Six Pack. Kenny Rogers became Brewster Baker to me forever after haha. "Kenny and Dolly" people would say, nope, that's Brewster Baker and Dolly I would reply

Patrick

I beg to differ, 'RAD' (1986) is the most 80s possible to achieve, and that it's not on the list for 80s classics should be a crime 😂

lee

The deep sense of community and belonging I felt when I tossed a vote to Flashdance only to find it's in the lead. I love it here. We are cheese folk. Also, referencing Mannequin in the intro makes me think you guys have already watched it, but in the event that you haven't, I'd like to give it an honorary vote. I love that movie for many reasons but I'd be thrilled to watch you react to it for James Spader's cheese-tastic performance alone.

PJ

Omg yeeeess 🩷🩷🩷

Night of the Comet is one of my favorites from back then! I can see that it's not going to win this time, but I hope that you eventually watch it!

cruzinbosco

Oooh! So excited for this one. I've only seen Flashdance and Stakeout, but will watch whatever wins.

Kristi Govertsen

I will now (happily) have the DTV opening song stuck in my head for the next few days.🤣

Cosmic Slice

I had never even heard of this movie until now and I watched thousands of movies in the 80s. I looked it up and saw that it has a very niche audience and bombed hard hard at the box office. Earth Girls is the opposite and sums up the MTV side of the 80s with Downtown Julie Brown and launched the careers of actors that went on to be massive in the 90s. Plus a soundtrack that included Depeche Mode, the B52s and Jesus & Mary Chain. Everything about it screams the 80s from the visual aesthetic to the valley culture satire and the absolute absurdity of the 80s. It's the movie for anyone that watched their MTV or lived through the neon fashion explosion. "I mean, I'm a manicurist! I know what's important!"

Mithroch

Ooo... Night of the Comet.

Chemical Em

Desperately seeking susan!! 1985

Chemical Em

Earth girls are easy 1988

Clay Poupart

I don't know Smiles or Six, and I think 'Flashdance' is overrated, but I'd call the rest of the list classic or near classic. Just watch them all. LOL :-)

Yasemin

OMG loved Flashdance!

Lola Lirola

Ooooh, you're right!! 🤦 I don't know what Teen Witch is, then. I am curious now!

Lola Lirola

Earth Girls Are Easy is the most deranged 80s fever dream ever filmed. The kind that alters your brain chemistry and you wonder forever how it was allowed to happen.

Lola Lirola

We love a cheese plate!!

Suzanne Whyte

Heathers 1989. I’m not sure I would call it cheesy but it is iconic and very 80’s.

Daniel Bickermann

Okay, here's an unwanted Hot Take. Remember Philip Seymour Hofman's scene in Almost Famous where (as music critic Lester Bangs) he proclaims that the Doors are posing as poets while just being drunken buffoons, whereas The Guess Who KNOW they are drunken buffoons, which actualy makes them poetic? Here is my version: Star Wars thinks it's fun, with it's lazy worldbuilding and its half-remembered Kurosawa bullshit, but it's actually just stupid plastic-decor-bad-actors-space-princess-laser-gun-pewpewpew-drivel. Flash Gordon KNOWS it is plastic-decor-bad-actors-space-princess-laser-gun-pewpewpew-drivel, which actually makes it really fun! Plus outrageous costumes by two-time Oscar winner Danilo Donati and a Queen soundtrack that sounds positively like an absolute all-male 80s sauna... yes, there, I said it: Flash Gordon is a beter movie than Star Wars. Please discuss after watching.

Patrick

Yeah, everyone I'm sure experienced the 80s in their own way, we couldn't afford satellite to get MTV, all the kids in my neighborhood were on bicycles at minimum 12 hours a day😂

Lola Lirola

The gasp I gwusp!! Look, I've watched both, and... fine, you're not completely wrong, dammit, though I will never ever admit it in real life. But also, come on, Star Wars is not that stupid! You cannot say that right while we're here watching Andor! But yeah, Flash Gordon is a lot of fun and great 80s delirium. And I'll do what I always do when these movies come up: Have you seen Jodorowski's Dune? The part where the team that was gonna make this version of Dune that never happened ended up scattering to the wind and influencing/creating Flash Gordon, Alien, and yes, even Star Wars, is pretty legendary. Jodorowski is an ass of a person, but the documentary is so key for any cinephile worth their salt. (edited three times, because it turns out the return key posts the comment when I'm on pc and I didn't know that, sigh)

Lola Lirola

Completely off topic, but I don't want this to get lost in the behemoth of the pinned thread with the movie list: Put "The Invite" on the next poll, stat. Or someone please buy it. I watched it last week, and it's incredible. It fires on all cylinders and everyone is giving 110% in it. Just so good. All the praise it got is deserved. Also, it's a remake of a Spanish film from a couple of years ago, and it pains me to say it, but this version is orders of magnitude better. Dang Americans, you did this one right. Hats off.

Cosmic Slice

We were on our bikes up until high school. In Canada we had Muchmusic but it was the same idea as MTV and come 1984...music tv was everything.

Paul T Hewes

Regardless of vote, they should watch Real Genius. Val Kilmer in his prime. Easily one of the best comedies of the 1980s.

Paul T Hewes

I grew up in the 1980s and when we had cable (off and on), we watched most of these on old school HBO in rotation... Real Genius should be watched no matter what. Its iconic.

Luis

I don't think they've reacted to a Penelope Cruz movie yet. It'd be a real shame to start with this one.

Lola Lirola

Okay, fine. Someone buy "Volver" before that, quick! 😅 But I think she was good on The Invite. She took the character to interesting places.

Actuarial Lurker

Flash Gordon for the stink fest- it co-stars Brian Blessed- need we say more...Real Genius was trying to ride on the coat tails of War Games so it gets the canned imitation cheese award

Actuarial Lurker

My father would go in the late 40s and early 50s to Saturday double features that also had 2 or 3 episodes of the 3 Stooges Flash Gordon or similar "shorts". He said they would last from 9am until 1pm and keep kids out of the house - all for 25 cents or later 50 cents When he was a teenager in the mid-50s they would go to a single feature and then the billiard hall and not the "malt shop" (since he grew up in a rougher part of NYC)

Lisa Klug

Flash! AAAAAAHHHHHH! King of the Impossible! Amazing soundtrack by Queen. That, and the insane costumes make this a very campy must-see. Flashdance is overrated. Real Genius is a great 80's flick with Val Kilmer in his prime.

Statmanjeff

i was quoting it to myself about an hour ago and thinking about renting a room at the local theater to watch it for my birthday this year - not kidding. and now i see it on this poll. the universe wants us all to see it again, i can tell.

Nannette

The top three being 55, 58, and 60 (votes cast at the time of this comment) highlights that this is a close poll. Literally two votes between the lead and the runner-up, and only three votes behind that we have another contender. I think the only fair thing is for the guys to watch all three movies lol
