Its funny about the dad mentioning the Baltimore Orioles because at the time the Orioles were a minor league team. At this time St. Louis had two major league baseball teams the Cardinals and the Browns in 1954 the Browns moved from St. Louis to Baltimore and were renamed the Orioles.

Even though they don't mention it also present at the 1904 Worlds fair was the legendary Apache warrior Geronimo.

I love all the insight into past holiday traditions you get with this glimpse at the turn of the century. Clearly Halloween got very nerfed over the years. Those kids would not abide a Truck-or-Treat.

ScarlettMi

Ha... you guys expecting black-and-white are in for a hell of a treat with how colourful this Technicolor movie is.

The actress who plays Lucille Ballard June Lockhart is most famous as the mom on the Lassie TV show and Dr. Robinson on the original Lost in Space TV show.

Leon Ames is actually tone deaf it is actually not him singing his voice was dubbed over by the films producer Arthur Freed.

I saw that in addition to my new picks, you also added Miss Sloane! Love that movie as well! (Whoever picked Miss Sloane, thank you.) It's a ways away, I know; but I'm excited for that run of films!

My goodness. There's absolutely nothing like Judy's voice. This huge, rich, mature sound out of such a young person... That whole style of singing is nearly gone now and it makes me sad. Thank God for recordings. P.S. If you'd like to hear something super cute, here's a recording of a young Judy Garland singing 'You Made Me Love You' framed as a fan letter to Clark Gable: https://youtu.be/ovAZVP6AGWY?si=cfZ7li-RNnUZvUZc

Kevin - "Buck up, here we go. Martini!" Hahahaha! I love that MST3K short. By far and away my favorite of theirs :)

This is one of my many favorite movies. The Skip to My Lou scene & Trolley scenes are favorites but little Margaret O'Brien stole the show!

In 1949 Judy Garland starred in The Good Old Summertime with Van Johnson a musical remake of The Shop Around The Corner and at the end we have a cameo from a 3 year old Liza Minnelli.

About the ketchup they really need to thicken that up. It this point it’s not ketchup it’s more like a really watery tomato soup.

ScarlettMi

This movie has my favourite rendition of my favourite Christmas song.

ScarlettMi

There used to be a big range of types of ketchups before store bought tomato ketchup became the standard. There were different base ingredients and different consistencies for homemade sauces.

There have been 25 worlds fairs hosted in the U.S. the first in 1876 in Philadelphia, followed by Chicago in 1893, St Louis was in 1904, NYC had a worlds fair in 1939 and 1964, the last hosted in the U.S. was in 1984 in New Orleans.

There are many covers of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Judy’s is the original but my other faves are Frank Sinatra, Amy Grant, and Michael Buble. The Halloween scene is actually based on traditions from that era, it was fairly soon after this time that things began to move in the direction of modern trick or treat, highly recommend the Drunk History episode about it to get the most of the story 😂

Judy Garland didn't start recording studio albums until the mid 1950s (after she left MGM). However, in 1961 she recorded a live 2 LP called Judy at Carnegie Hall. That record spent 73 weeks on the charts. 13 weeks at #1. It climbed the charts again when it was released on CD. Either way you go studio or live you won't be disappointed.

I think it wasn't until the 1930s when they started trying to buy them off with trick or treating because the vandalism was getting too out of hand

Tarryn Harris

This is my one of my absolute favourite movies. I have watched it more times than I remember ever since I was a kid. Even though it isnt really classified as one, it is also my favourite Christmas movie. It is interesting to look up about the book and the choices around Angus and Tootie's characters.

Judy was 22 when this film was being made and starting to shake off her child actor/ugly duckling personae, largely with the help of director Vincent Minnelli who wanted to refine, glamorise and mature her look. They began their relationship at this time and then married a year or so after. He was at least 20 years her senior and her second of five husbands. Her first marriage was at 19.

Kiss before engagement? Remember, "Tombstone" was the Wild West. I love that show, but it does not reflect every culture in that era. So, yes, it was absolutely and positively a thing not to let a guy kiss you until you were engaged, or people would say you were "fast". That wasn't a good thing. It could literally ruin your life if you were female. However, that rule changed rapidly from 1900 until the 1920's. None of the songs from the party scene are from this movie. They are old standards. The rest of the songs like "The Trolly Song" were written for this film. Judy Garland was a best selling singer on the charts for decades. She had many hit singles and albums. Tootie is a special child. I think she either grew up to be a murder mystery writer or a serial killer, LOL.

What a great movie! I had no idea it would be so beautiful to look at, or so off-beat and funny. I love that morbid little girl.

I definitely prefer when it's a melancholy version because Christmas isn't happy for everyone

Andy Schreiber

Amazingly, Margaret O'Brian, who played Tootie, is still alive!

Youtalkingtome

Okay, I know I have heard several versions of it, I just never realized it was Judy!

Youtalkingtome

Honestly yes. I love the Sinatra version but this was wonderful

I think the Omaha Worlds Fair in 1896 was prominently referenced in The Wizard of Oz, too.

Lisa Klug

There really was a story which never got told there. She's just the right age to be a rebellious flapper in the 1920's.

Loved your commentary!! My favorite scene is the one where Grandpa dances with Esther to the back of the Christmas tree and Esther exits with John 🎄🎬 ❤️

The only two things you need to understand any gay bar during Pride month are this, and that iconic YouTube video of Leslie Uggams trying to sing “June is Bustin Out All Over” at A Capitol Fourth when the cue card guy fell in the mud and she sang absolute gibberish.

The Judy Garland "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is the most classic one, premiered in this movie, and became a huge hit during wartime because its theme of trying to get through a difficult holiday and look forward to better ones hit home so much with people. Later on, other artists changed some of the lyrics to avoid that theme and make it all much more upbeat. But I love the original the most *because it acknowledges that not every Christmas is a perfect Christmas, and that note of sadness makes it more beautiful. Which is very much a Judy Garland thing. You should also catch the solo versions of the Trolley Song that Garland would do later on in her stage act - she made it jazzier and a real banger.
