One of the great "Easter Eggs" from this episode, if you listen to the radio clip closely, Marvin is Martin Sheen, though he is uncredited.

One more to go... 🥲 It's interesting that many showrunners today come to the table with a 5-year plan. They've (we've) learned from their predecessors' mistakes. I feel like this is the first episode where the cast felt like a cohesive, empathetic family. Without all the hoo-hah of false, theatrical camaraderie and one upsmanship. Also, Steven Weber's Jack Rudolph is the love of my life. 😆 This man spends his entire life exhaustively herding loud, beautiful, self-absorbed cats and putting out dumpster fires for billionaires. We all deserve a Jack in our life.

One of the things that gets glossed over these days is how dangerous it still can be to be pregnant and to give birth. The reason why it’s not considered as big a deal these days is because of the exceptional advances in obstetrics and maternal care that modern medicine has achieved. Storylines like this underscore that when doctors are trying to treat patients with pregnancy complications, they need full discretion to do it and be effective. When politicians write laws that constrain physicians upon pain of prison time, that can and has made doctors hesitate in emergent situations. I wish more people understood that pregnancy complications are common and miscarriages are shockingly common and bringing a baby into this world poses a significant risk to the mother, statistically. And that we need to treat doctors like people we can trust to help. Sorry for the rant. I wish more TV shows showed the realistic risks in lieu of sensationalizing them, but I’m glad this show did.

Last episode, I think it was Matt who said "it's not that kind of story", meaning he doesn't think we're going to lose Tom's brother and Jordan and/or the baby. I still can't tell if that's foreshadowing something bad happening, or a fourth wall break, Matt telling the audience that it's not that kind of story. I think Simon's situation is much more straightforward than Matt and Danny's was. Simon just needs to say hey, I was obviously upset and provoked, and I went too far, I'm not a terrorist sympathizer. But for Matt, I think there's a third option they're not exploring, which is to simply make the radio guys look like fools. Matt is kind of acting like he's above having to explain himself, like the sketch should be able to just stand on its own. But you just don't have that luxury on broadcast television. So have the conversation. Engage with the audience. It always bothered me in the early 2000s that we weren't having that conversation because everyone was too afraid of it.

Yeah, the last episodes really are something else. Regarding 'finally Danny is on his knees', it's worth adding: he is on his knees in front of his baby girl, but not in front of god.

It would have been so interesting to see where this show goes, if continued. I feel pretty sure that even the first season probably would have been very different. I feel this last, monumental, five parter plot (Episode 18, Breaking News, through K&R Part 1-3, to Episode 23, it's all a single night!) only exists because the show got cancelled, and Sorking wanted to go out with a bang. And he did. So, while on the one hand, I always feel sorry I will never see the what could have been seasons of Studio 60, at least this decision lead to me having this pretty unique experience with this intense, dramatic season and series conclusion.

James Lesure is SO good as the captain! He is always great in any bit part he plays and I don’t understand why he isn’t a household name! He has the gravitas and the looks to lead something in his name but alas that never happens!

I just saw a sad report from Variety that Lucy Davis, who portrayed Lucy, has been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. The cancer has metastasized to her bones and is too late start chemotherapy.

Roland

Yeah, saw that today, awful news.

Thank you for saying that. I was gonna mention it in the episode and I totally forgot. We forget how dangerous child birth really is
