One of the things I liked about this episode is that it does have the moment where Riley says he loves her and she doesn’t say it back. It’s not super highlighted in the moment, but it is given a second to hang in the air. So, when Riley tells Xander that Buffy doesn’t love him, it isn’t necessarily coming out of nowhere. The series always does a great job at laying the groundwork for the character moments and storylines. It’s something I always appreciate about it.

Great one guys! Yes this is a fun one. Nicholas Brendon's identical twin played the other part. And we also got some insights in what Riley really is thinking. Great stuff, but it's still the weakest episode of this season...imo of course.

I love how Anya doesn't think that sauve Xander isn't the real Xander. Buffy and Reily think that they were fooled the moment Willow talks to them, but Anya couldn't choose which one wasn't the real one. She really does see the best in him.

Willow, now: "I did have an identical twin, I handled it fine!" Willow, then: "I'm so evil, and skanky, and I think I'm kinda gay!" Hits different in retrospect.

Kelsey Krehbiel

Oh! I hadn’t thought about that before! That’s actually really sweet.

It is always interesting to watch this episode after the reveal. The Fandom has always been split on Xander's character and this episode shows why. We have trouble seeing the better side of Xander but we are quick to see his less favorable traits. Suave Xander has the confidence, the intelligence, and attractive traits of Xander that we see on occasion. His first thought was about protecting Anya and he shows remarkable skill at work and reading people. While other Xander has the parts we dislike. His needy, self absorbed, messy self sabotaging egotistical self we recognize instantly. Anya fell in love with the part of Xander we dont see often and the other one willow recognized because she knows Xander the best and knows that side of him more but could tell he was a bit off. Without that side of him Xander is a bit more suicidal which is pretty sad.

Anya is so funny. She always makes me laugh. "Buffy has super strength. Why don't we just load her up like one of those little horses?!" 😂

Yes, Babylon 5 is a show, one of the best sci fi shows ever made. Season 1 is a little rough, but season 3-4 has some of the tightest best serialized writing I've ever experienced.

So the reason the effects were so good is that the actor who plays Xander, Nicholas Brandon, has a twin brother who occasionally would play as his body double. It's kind of amazing they waited so long to put him in the show. As I recall Brandon played messy Xander and his twin ayed suave Xander

Erica

"one of them's probably more responsible and anya'll have to choose" 😂 dead on. Im a little surprised thatno one's mentioned that "cool" xander was played by Kelly Donovan, Nicholas Brendan's twin brother! I believe he is also a stunt double on the show, but i could be wrong One thing this episode brought up was the idea that the things inherent to the slayer are fully separate from the things inherent to Buffy Summers, even if those halves can't survive without the other. I don't think Giles meant it this way, but he also sort of implied that the Buffy side is the weak side. Buffy's face throughout that monologue is sort of telling, and given that buffy told giles she wants to learn more about her slayer side, i think this was info she might not have known she was hoping not to hear. Probably just me reading into it too far, but smg's acting always evokes complex thought for me

Kimba

Oh I hadn’t noticed that before. It really did feel it was coming from nowhere. Something to look for on rewatch.

This always felt to me like a weird filler episode that didn’t do much to move the story forward. Other than to get Xander out of his awful parent’s home and maybe realise that there is more to himself than he has thought up till now. And then Riley realising and expressing to Xander that he doesn’t think Buffy loves him. Anya has no filter and I love her for that! Surprised it took Joss this long into the series to bring Nick Brendon’s identical twin and his stand in onscreen.

I’m more of a Willow and Spike fan (in terms of character episodes), but I always enjoyed this Xander episode a lot. I love the theme is that he has everything already inside of him to be the best version of himself. Plus it’s a cool apartment and nice continuation of “Restless” where Xander kept trying to leave and escape the basement but every time he did, he’d wind up back down there. With the subtle reference to his negative feelings about his father mirrored there and in this episode. He’s taking a step from that and moving forward with his life with Anya, his career, and addresses how he needs to see himself as more than just someone who Buffy rescues.

This is a fun episode for sure and has some great character development threaded through it for almost everyone, but given the split self concept I can't help but feel that some opportunities were missed. I like seeing more of Xander's troubled home life because it is as yet under-explored but gives a lot more dimension to everything we know about him. I love that Anya sees the best in Xander so she was the readiest to believe in suave Xander's authenticity. I love Buffy's "what if" moment of insecurity as she still wrestles with what it means to be the slayer and who or what she would be without it. And in all honesty, I almost feel more compelled and emotionally affected by the development we see in Riley's story and character in his few moments on the periphery of the doppelganger plot than I do by the arcs of either Xander, which feels bizarre to even say. It's a good episode, but in my opinion it falls short of what it could have been. I think the thing that irks me the most is that this spell has such enormous potential for unflinching character dissection, so much that it would be impossible to match in a non-fantasy/scifi show, but it ends up feeling a little muzzled because it happens to Xander. The actual worst qualities we've seen routinely expressed by Xander and all the things that make him so divisive or disliked by the audience at times don't feel honestly represented here at all. A truly frank split of his character would be suave, sensitive, capable Xander contrasted with a selfish, petulant, misogynistic creep. It's not like a vamp willow situation where her doppelganger being a demon gives it the freedom to be truly nasty and evil, everything done or displayed by both Xanders has to be held against him at the end of the spell as different facets of his true self. I don't think the writers were willing (or allowed) to properly interrogate the real worst aspects of the Joss proxy so it ends up feeling like the episode shies away from its own storytelling potential and softballs the character of Xander by implying that he only consists of his unrealised best self and a bumbling slapsticky dope who dresses like an eight year old and falls down a lot. The real embodiment of Xander's flaws and weaknesses would be much darker and unlikable, and could have even made for a great episode villain instead of the clown he plays here. If we followed the perspective of "good" Xander as he has to witness and confront his worst and weakest possible self made flesh, and then process that experience with his now heightened and unobstructed sensitivity and maturity, it could have been a very dramatic catalyst for life altering growth and made excellent use of every single aspect of his character as we know it. But he's Joss's self insert and ego trumps introspection so it all ends up feeling rather timid and biased. In season 3 alone, Buffy and Willow both got dark and complicated shadow selves who were hardened and unfriendly at best and sadistic murderers at worst. Willow had vamp Willow and Buffy had both her jaded Wish-verse self and Faith as the dark slayer. Meanwhile Xander Whedon gets literally split in two and we get Cool Guy and Goofy Clumsy Damp Guy. It's a fun episode if you can adjust your expectations and mute the critical voice in your head, but I just have to roll my eyes at the cop out of it all. I'm also a little puzzled by how restrained they were in the shots of the Xanders physically interacting. His double was played by Nicholas Brendon's twin, and it's not every day that one of your fantasy show's main characters has an identical twin so I don't know why they didn't go wilder with some of the shots. The scenes where they interact look great, but there are quite a few moments therein that could have conceivably been done with editing tricks and special effects. I wonder why they didn't fully seize every opportunity to make the audience go "how in the hell did they do THAT shot??". It's entirely possible to watch this episode without ever considering that Brendon actually had a twin, and I just can't wrap my head around literally having two Xanders at your disposal and not throwing subtlety to the wind and shooting scenes so mind bending that audiences would have to assume he had a twin, a clone, or access to the most advanced special effects on earth. All that being said, Spike's shopping cart full of pilfered garbage for his crypt is a great casual sight gag in his squatter arc, only outdone by him tape measuring a mausoleum last season. And I love how genuinely disheartened Riley is by how people aren't recycling. And I never noticed this before but I was very amused by the archive box full of paperwork in the background of the contractor's office that has PAPERWORK scrawled on its side in huge letters. Great reaction as always! Glad you're enjoying the season so far. I agree with another commenter in that this is one of the weakest episodes of the season, which is saying a lot because despite all my criticism above about its unfulfilled potential, it isn't a weak episode of television at all. Buffy was just on its own plain of excellence at this time so even totally solid episodes felt like weak spots.

This has always been one of my favorite episodes, then again I am partial to Xander-centric episodes. I also think it's such an important episode going forward: for him, for Riley, for Buffy, and for Anya.

Cotubug

Would be interested in your guys opinion about Riley saying Buffy doesn’t love him, at this point in the show from what you’ve seen, do you feel that’s right?

Alex

The other Xander was played by his twin brother, and so was the other version of him in Coherence.

Mariska Costeris

I really like this episode. Double Xander is very funny and the Riley part is a bit heartbreaking. I think he is right about Buffy. She likes having him around but she is not in love like he is, which is totally fine by the way.

Kirsten Stewart

Loved the AD reference - Her? 😂😂😂

I love how supportive everyone is at the start while Xander's parents argue: Buffy tries to change the subject, Riley tries to ignore it/cover it up with a cough, and Anya rubs Xander's leg. Those are some great friends! For how problematic Xander is as a character, his episodes are consistently some of the best. For me, this comes second only to The Zeppo. I wasn't aware of that, I was really impressed with their mirror work! 🤣

By which I guess she means a mule? Hilarious line.

Yeah, agreed about the sword being out of nowhere - I thought she was going to break his staff, since there was talk about Toth using tools and not fighting bare-handed.

Currently rewatching season 1 of B5. and despite the episodic feel and the atmosphere of working out the kinks, there’s a lot of brilliant setup going on.

Tina

Same!! re your rot13.

What I’m reading is that Nicholas Brendon played both Xanders, and his brother was there when they were both on screen together.

So, I just saw a reactor make one of those "Please, chill with the spoilers" videos, and it's not the first time I've seen that video with a Buffy reactor (in actuality I've probably seen 4). And for some reason it always comes to a head in season 5, so if you guys haven't already, you might want to get a mod to start screening Youtube comments. I'm not sure that the four-episode buffer will be enough.
