This is one of those shows I’ve wanted to watch and just never got to, so this feels like a sign. Hopefully we’re all starting a fun journey!

Michelle

I absolutely loved this show, so I'm so happy you're watching it. Given your reactions to a few of the scenes/lines, you are in for a ride and it's going to be so fun.

Suzanne Whyte

I tried to start this show earlier this year because I did think it would be one I would like. I didn’t make it past the first episode because I couldn’t stand any of the characters and it was a bit too over the top for my taste. I’m willing to give it another shot though.

Tina

Same!

This show is bonkers (in the best possible way). This will be my third time watching the series, and it never fails to make me laugh (and cringe) out loud (in the best possible way).🤣 PS A little BTS: My sis is friends with one of the actresses on the show, and the writers’ mandate for all the Gemstone family members’ characters is that no matter the grossness of the money, no matter the insane conflicts, no matter the profanity, no matter all the manipulative hypocrisy and over-the-topness, the characters DO believe in God and believe what they’re preaching. It turns out the idiocy and total lack of self awareness is infinitely more funny (and cringy) than if they were just one-dimensional, liars and malicious criminals.

When you mentioned wave pools that reminded me if you get a chance check out the documentary Class Action Park on HBO. The story of Action Park in New Jersey an absolute wild and hilarious tale of the most fun dangerous and would now be illegal theme park in America. And yes all this occurred during the 1980s.

I'm glad you picked this one. I watched season 1 when it aired. It either aired right after Succession or in that time slot when Succession ended. I've always been meaning to get back to this show. You are right the crime stuff was not in the ads and was a surprise.

Youtalkingtome

Most of these characters seem pretty tough to love right now, but I think there are some arcs definitely coming

Youtalkingtome

After this episode, that makes so much sense. I was surprised at how authentic they all think they are. It does make them more interesting than I expected them to be; I thought they were just sleazy grifters. It turns out, they are just wealthy morons.

Youtalkingtome

Seriously, this episode could have been called "You Have No Idea What This Show Is Going to Be About."

Youtalkingtome

Okay, I'm glad I'm not crazy, because I felt like I should have remembered that if it was there.

Youtalkingtome

I just watched the trailer. Holy crap. I am definitely watching that this week.

have quite literally *never* been as hyped for someone to watch a show!! (with the exception of Black Sails, which is a prequel to Treasure Island and certified masterpiece of a show, characters, writing, conniving, music, sets, just incredible and if you ever get to it I could die happy). but YES, this show is so fucking funny, especially if you come from any kind of church background, they nail SO much of the utter hypocrisy

Youtalkingtome

The sign on the compound gate that started "Blessed are the poor..." I mean, are you kidding me??

Clare Manion

Fantastic! I’ve heard such good things about this show, so I’m excited to watch along. This first episode was hilarious! (And yeah, way wilder than expected.) “None of this says Christian to me” - 1000% agree! The level of hypocrisy is baffling. It reminds me of the line from Hannah and Her Sisters: "If Jesus came back and saw what's going on in his name, he'd never stop throwing up.” Also - John Goodman’s character reminds me a bit of the role he had in O Brother Where Art Thou. If I remember right, he was a bible salesman with a similar vibe - especially when we see him talking about the business of the church (in this show). Brilliant in both cases.

Johnny Knoxville made a movie called Action Point based on that park. It's a decent movie, particularly if you like Jackass.

Youtalkingtome

Yes! Goodman was playing the cyclops. He was great! After this first episode, I have no idea what to expect from this show moving forward, which is a lot of fun.

glad you're watching the whole thing, I'll admit the first season and parts of second were a bit much for me the first time but then three was my favourite and I'd be sorry if I hadn't gotten to it!

JENNIFER E

Everything I want to say is spoiler-y, so instead I will just say i had been hoping for this one. Thanks!

I just started this! Serendipitous timing! Gotta love a big-budget HBO pilot. When they do it right, they knock it outta the park.

nia

It’s got a considerable amount of toxic bickering, so I limit how many episodes I watch at once (to protect my peace), but I’m up to episode 4 and it’s really growing on me.

Brina Blue

I had no idea what this show was about! From the title I was expecting it to be about a fictitious 1960s soul group just starting out and trying to make it in show business! So, yes it really went in a different direction than my expectations! I'm all in though! On to episode 2!
