Oooh petition for you all to watch Duck Soup! It's a GREAT movie, one of the all time great comedies ever made. I really recommend you add it to a poll some time soon :)

I agree with all your commentary on Logan. There will probably be others who still disagree and say he is entitled etc, but he is a good guy! He is respectful of Rory, open to hanging out with Marty too as a friend of hers and that was really nice of him to offer to pay for him. It also wasn’t done in such a way as to be insulting to Marty at all or showing off that he has money, it was just said as a kindness. Logan is well aware he’s got privilege and he can’t help that, he has grown up with it and been places and lived a life of it, but he really tries not to flaunt it. He was also not pushing Rory into anything she might not have been ready for at the end and that’s a good guy in my books! I can never watch the whole Kirk Fiddler scenes without cringing! It was just too weird and uncomfortable.

I both enjoy the total absurdity of the Stars Hollow Elementary production of Fiddler on the Roof, and end up just desperately wanting Chinese food every time I watch this one. Though I know a decent number of lesbians’ children and no way one of them gets that old without knowing what a Phillips head screwdriver is 🤣.

I really appreciate Logan asking for consent not once, but twice, because he didn't get a verbal one the first time.

I agree. Logan was in no way mean to Marty about the money and didn't make it a big deal. I understand Marty struggling with it here, but his pride doesn't mean Logan is a bad guy. Marty chose to go out to dinner knowing he didn't have enough money for it and i don't think anyone at the table except him would've cared if logan paid his share. Its just a tough situation

I don't know, I think it was kind of rude of Rory to just dismiss the plans she and Marty already had, plans that they in fact were already carrying out, to go out with Logan and his friends instead. Yeah, Marty could've said he'd pass, but I think he saw how bad Rory wanted to go and knew she wouldn't desert him. I feel like, in a similar situation, I would've told Logan that I already had plans and wanted to see him some other night.

Oof--Rory's gotta gigantic poster of Dave Eggers on her wall and is reading A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. Brilliant cure for any and all sophomore slumps.

I hear what people say about Logan being a nice guy, but . . . for me this episode still doesn’t help my dislike of him. He marches up to Rory’s door and talks like a salesman trying to get a win — “Get your coat!” Without bothering to inquire about what HER plans for the evening were. He continues to be a mixture of juvenile and emotionally intelligent *when he wants to be*.

Yasemin

Oh, I am surprised you took issue with the Kirk scene. I think it's so funny and weird (but in a fun way). It's Kirk! Love him. :)

Tyler Explains It All

Ever since you guys watched Fiddler, I have been waiting for this episode!

Dil

Same! Glad others caught that too!

The Inedible Mattman

Oh! She's from Big Bang Theory. She was a scientist who was in love with Sheldon.

Koko

Thanks, that was exactly what I wanted to write. Logan seems used to get everything he wants and I hate this. I don't like his caracter at all and without spoiling I really really don't like how Rory is when she's with him.

Carl Wilson

I like Logan okay, but he does have a way of steamrolling through things with his sense of entitlement. One glance at the situation in Rory's dorm room should indicate that she and Marty have an evening in progress, Marx Brothers posters up, snacks all over the table. Logan inviting Marty is fine but he's still getting his way and making his plans more important than anyone else's. I agree he was nice about the bill issue, but only after ordering a $75-per-person meal that he should have known in advance Marty couldn't afford. Being *really nice would have been to say, *on the way over*, "dinner's my treat tonight, by the way," rather than in front of everybody afterwards. He also could have called Rory beforehand and asked if she had plans. I'm still not over how Logan treated Marty the first time around - not as bad as his douchebag friends, but still condescendingly. This still seemed condescending to me.

Carl Wilson

Yeah, that was A+ behavior, no matter how I feel about how he handled the earlier part of the evening.

Carl Wilson

Yeah, Riki Lindhome - she's also from the comedy duo Garfunkle & Oates with Kate Micucci, and she's in something else K&J are watching, but an episode they haven't seen yet.

Carl Wilson

I find the Kirk-Fiddler stuff hilarious because it's Kirk, a man-child from another dimension, but I have heard stories of high schools actually getting adult "ringers" or teachers to play parts they didn't think the kids could handle, and it seems like a completely inappropriate missing of the point of school plays. If the kids can't handle it, just let them be bad, or don't do it! In one case I heard a woman talk about how her high-school drama teacher played opposite her in a role in which they had to kiss and he seemed way too happy to do it.

I might be the exact cross-section of all the commentary on this episode... as a child of a dad who was raised Jewish and a mom who was raised Christian and I grew up in a town that was a long time destination for lesbian families to settle down in. we never got Chinese for Christian holidays, as a kid we got Christmas with presents and the tree and all. And I grew up in a town with a lot of kids my age with Jewish, and mixed-Jewish, and lesbian parents... I very likely grew up going to school with more classmates with lesbian parents than you if you didn't grow up in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Roland

Agreed, that's a huge bill for someone on a low wage, let alone going on to an after-hours club. Poor behaviour by Rory as well.

Allison O

I didn’t grow up with any children of lesbians (that I know of) but I did go to college in Northampton, Massachusetts so I know a lot of lesbians who have children now :). Also have a mom who grew up with one Catholic and one Jewish parent - we did go to the movies on Christmas a couple times. And we had lox and bagels for Christmas breakfast when our Jewish godmother came over. It’s great when you’re the Venn diagram of all the jokes.

Youtalkingtome

The only Eggers book I have read is What Is the What, which is wonderful!

I think it's ok for me to say that I kind of don't like Marty. His shtick gets to me. He really should've told Rory he liked her a loooong time ago instead of pining all sad sack about it after multiple, repeated times where she has friendzoned him... hard... That it had to come down like this. It annoys me and I cannot put my finger exactly on why. Rory, though, should've totally told Logan that she was hanging out with Marty, was happy to see him, and let's make plans tomorrow or something like that. It was icky - not for Logan to offer - but more for Rory to accept or even make that something she put on Marty. I don't think that was fair. I am not a Logan hater. He has flaws just like Rory does and I think in a lot of ways he gets blamed for Rory's choices in this half of the series and I think that gives way too little agency to Rory, which is what her mother and grandparents do and it proves why she was never prepared for actual adversity or criticism.

dys

Wow, small world. I stayed nearby for college going to UMass Amherst so I know a lot of Smithies (for others, Smith is the only college in Northampton so I'm assuming that's where Allison O went).
