What a Festive Evening

Neill Shaughness

This is what Dedra referred to last episode as "letting them taste what winning feels like". At this point the Empire wants the Ghorman front feeling overconfident. Kinda like when Luthen and Saw let Krieger's raid fail for the sake of protecting Lonni's position

Neill Shaughness

Both Vel/Cinta and Cassian/Bix in this episode choose to lean into their relationships rather than accept Luthen's lonelier attitude. I think this is a subtle acknowledgement to the continued evolution of the Rebellion of Luthen into the Rebellion in the original Star Wars. One built on a more community driven philosophy

Benjamin Bratt took over the role of Bail Organa, because Jimmy Smits was unable reprise the role due to scheduling conflicts. The actress that portrayed Mishiko, the woman Kleya is talking to at the party, also portrayed the witch Mirri Maz Duur at the end of season one of game of thrones.

Lola Lirola

Yeah, it was very prominent this episode the internal and external struggle of relationships vs politics / cost vs cause / community vs academia. I like how you make the connection to the "New Hope" rebellion, and how that one's also powered by community. Is it blasphemous to bring up how they also explore this in Rian Johnson's Last Jedi, when they bring Poe to task for putting his desire for individual heroics above group safety? 🙊 Anyway, this show is just so great, I am loving every minute. I am mad we're already halfway through! We needed one more season!

not sure you noticed it but they recast the role of Bail Organa with Benjamin Bratt. Jimmy Smits was unfortunatly busy with other projects at the time.

Neill Shaughness

Not blasphemous to me. The Last Jedi is my favorite Star Wars film of the 21st century by a significant margin.

Roland

Aaaah, that's where I know her from! 🤩

dys

I dunno if that counts as a spoiler technically since I don't think he mentioned his name or anything about what planet he was Senator of yet, but seems like a small enough thing to confirm. If you have to recast Jimmy Smits, you can't do better than Benjamin Bratt. This is the recasting of one legendary actor with another I commented on last episode.

Neill Shaughness

Another example of the change in attitude is Luthen's inability to understand that Mon just wants to tell Vel that she cares about her.

Crawnch!

So I don’t know if you guys put it together but the whole kill Gorst mission was Luthen’s idea. Cassian came to him in the night to tear him a new one and then said “if you want my blood, you help me work this out” in regard to Bix. Then Cassian wakes up and Bix tells him that the signal is flashing which means there’s a new mission. And then we see Bix get her revenge. Thanks to Luthen we get a cool shot of them walking away with an explosion behind them and we get to see how Bix got her groove back. 🙂

She called him senator Organa her husband called him Bail. I just noticed that they missed it as is easy to do in a reaction.

JC

Im always in awe this was Elizabeth Dulau (Kleya)’s first job out of RADA.

Michael Bennett

When you've been operating in the shadows with minimal contact and maximal sacrifice for a while, at some point, people have to be reminded what they're fighting for.

Michael Bennett

There are so many layers to this. The ISB is playing Ghorman by letting them do the hijacking. Luthen is playing the ISB by letting them play Ghorman. Heck, Syril is playing Ghorman and Dedra is playing Syril.

Michael Bennett

My favorite thing about going after Dr. Gorst is that it's not even a purely selfish mission. Yes, Cassian definitely put that together to help Bix get some closure, but it's also a hugely important mission for the cause, because Partagaz told us that Gorst was setting up a new enhanced interrogation program for the Empire. So they're stopping him from doing that to countless rebels in the future, and protecting their intel.

Zach Hershman

Thanks to Lonni telling Luthen. Lonni found out Gorst was going to be setting up shop there, so he told Luthen.

Neill Shaughness

I love that both Luthen and the ISB have pretty much the same plan, yo just let whatever happens happen and bank on controlling the public opinion afterwards.

micah

calibrate your enthusiasm!

Carl Wilson

Surely Cassian and Bix are leaving that planet, after doing that, right?

Lola Lirola

Same! Last Jedi is my favourite outside the original trilogy. I have found my people!!

Neill Shaughness

You guys really hammered the guy who got Cinta killed, and he definitely fucked up, but remember the Ghorman perspective. They are not fighting a galactic rebellion. They are fighting a local one. The first "rebel" they met was Cassian who basically told them to sit tight. After, they get a stranger, who isn't from Ghorman, who told them not to carry weapons on a dangerous mission. I can understand not following that order. We know Vel is qualified, but they have no way of knowing that. Frankly, while I do think he should have followed orders, I don't think Vel's leadership style was terrific here, and I think Vel agrees. Her speech to him, I believe, is as much to herself. She is ultimately responsible for any death on her assignment, and she knows it. She doesn't really try to earn the trust she is demanding and that's why he was carrying. I don't think the show is trying to say Vel is right and the Ghorman is are wrong, I think it's trying to illuminate the difficulty in revolution. One doesn't know who to trust, who to obey, or who to ignore.

Roland

Do we know if Gorst was killed at a Navy facility rather than an ISB facility? That would help disguise Lonnie's involvement.

Roland

I really like that analysis, and I agree. That said, the guy did promise over and over that he would follow orders.... He wouldn't have lived long in Saw's outfit!

Zach Hershman

Luthen put this mission together after Cassian's visit to him.

Barbara Panigot

I LOVE this show!! And your reactions to this show!

GDF

I don't know if you guys picked it up, but Partagaz told Lonnie and the other guy about Dr Gorst beginning to spread out his interogation method. Off-screen, Lonnie must have told this to Luthen as it would be bad to have more Dr Gorst's looking around. And then the next thing we see on-screen is the mission light flashing and Bix and Cassian killing Gorst. So it was Luthen who decided to help Bix by letting her have her revenge on Dr Gorst.

dys

I thought she looked familiar too!

Chris

I tend to be pretty forgiving of characters in shows, as most often the situations we see characters confronted with are difficult ones. But I think it's right to come down on the guy. It's true that their rebellion is a local one, and he doesn't know Vel personally... but he knows that his group has no tactical experience and they sent out for experts. And I think we're very much meant to consider his motives--we don't see him having some tactical disagreement about there being a reason he needs a weapon... I think we're meant to see him as being a stupid, egotistical kid who thinks having a weapon makes him a big man. Which I think is borne out by when he pulls the gun out and who he pulls it on. I do agree that it's very much the show trying to illustrate the difficulty in revolution--but I think it's saying that one of the difficulties is that there will be a lot of hotheaded young dudes (let's be real, it'll mostly be dudes) who may have the correct politics and moral valence... but who also get off on running around with guns.

Paul T Hewes

it was for sure the new naval building they were working on. Little security and personnel. Killed immediately after Lonni got the news about what was going to happen. -Also, Lonni made sure that the Dedra's former assistant did the reading first, and was "leading" that effort. He was a step back from the info.

Youtalkingtome

Benjamin Bratt is a great actor! Looking forward to seeing his Organa

D Gyre

I think there's room to criticize Vel's leadership, but then we could say that of most leaders, even Luthen. Its very interesting to think of that speech as to herself as well, I like the idea, but I do also come down that its more on the guy than on Vel.

D Gyre

It's a little hint that Luthen might care. He will sacrifice feeling and friend if necessary, we know this, but here this serves the cause. He could have possibly had someone else do the hit, we have to assume he has other agents stashed away (although maybe not right there in close proximity). Functionally, yes, it serves the cause specifically and perhaps improves the stability/reliability of two key assets (Bix, and Andor who is worried about Bix). So it might be all calculation. But I think, WHEN THE CAUSE ALLOWS ROOM FOR IT, Luthen does care and so here he's doing this also because he wants to give her that closure.

Neill Shaughness

As I said in my original comment, I agree that he fucked up. I just understand why, from his perspective, he didn't listen to a stranger telling him not to arm himself on a dangerous mission. At the end of the day he's a rebel putting his life on the line too. Vel approached the situation like Luthen would, but I think this arc illustrated in many ways that the rebellion is outgrowing that approach.
