Neil Writes Things

You guys are going to have so much fun with this show 😆

Erik

It's funny you mentioned the meme of Ken Jeong from this show, because there are a lot of scenes from this show that have either become memes, and lines that are just so quotable (much like 30 Rock). It will definitely change your personal lexicon after watching it.

Lyla

As good as this episode is, and I agree with you, it's really fun, it's nowhere near the level this show gets to honestly. I would say the show actually really hits it stride towards the end of season one. Not necessarily in laughs, because it's basically always filled with entertaining, sharp writing, but in terms of figuring out the kind of sitcom it wants to be. This is still early days, and they're still figuring it out, particularly in regards to how conventional they want to be! But regardless, it's all such a great ride truly, so I love this early period of the show too.

Joe is correct. Joel McHale was a walk-on Tight End at Washington including on the team that won the 93 Rose Bowl. Also I love how excited you guys are for this show. I don't think any 30 minute comedy has a higher peak than Community. And it's nice to have another set of reactors who are intelligent and pay attention so they can fully appreciate the show haha.

If you are about to start any other shows soon- PLEASE do the 70s sitcom SOAP.

dys

I think the thing that works in this show is that he's basically playing himself, and is the butt of the joke a lot of the time. So you don't actually have to like him as a person or character for his character to work, infamously none of the rest of the cast did either.

dys

You're right, but this episode does hint a lot more at how unhinged it will get than the pilot did. The pilot was a great pilot, don't get me wrong, but it was just the barest introduction to the characters and premise.

dys

They mentioned loving Ken Jeong, and I love him in other stuff too, but IMO Chang is by far his funniest character.

Lyla

Yeah, agreed. This episode is definitely more of a pilot in the sense of giving viewers a bit of an idea of where the show will end up. But Kevin and Joe's discussion of the more conventional aspects of it just made me recall how much this sitcom reinvents itself over and over during the course of its run!

Actuarial Lurker

"You'd rather keep it real than be likable..." "We can have a candlelight vigil...like lesbians have on the news..." So this WILL be a funny show...

dys

I don't know what point in the show they started this, but apparently a lot of Troy's lines were just written in the scripts as "And then Donald says something funny".

Youtalkingtome

There were a LOT of well-written jokes in this episode for sure.

Well that's not true, I got all of those references and I only turned 18 last year, when I graduated High school, in the 90s. There's no way I'm in my 50s 😉

dys

When we're talking about someone like Dolly Parton passing saying almost no other human being could be that multi-talented, that is going to be the reaction to Donald Glover passing... Probably 200 years from now when the rest of us are long dead but still.

Actuarial Lurker

I did say SOME- they pulled that specific ad in 1982 for being racially insensitive

nia

“In order to increase awareness of homelessness, security has been given binoculars” always gets me. And the chant, “We hate! 👏 👏 Guatemala!”

Tyler Explains It All

The Israel and Palestine flags are very jarring in 2026. How stuff does not age well lol

Jamie Morgan

The fact that you're already laughing this hard when the show isn't even CLOSE to hitting its stride makes me very excited for your future reactions! You might want to keep water bottles handy to rehydrate after your tears of laughter lol

kosmickrab

Man, I haven't heard that theme song in awhile. This is one of the shows I wish you were doing more than one episode a week. I can't wait for certain moments and episodes to happen!

kosmickrab

I'm aware of that thanks to Wayne's World!

Suzanne Whyte

It’s so difficult to be patient. I can’t wait for the iconic episodes or the ones that the guys will particularly enjoy based on their movie preferences. They seem so far away.

Tina

I think it was pretty much as jarring back then, just depending on perspective.

The main issue I have with community is that unless you watch the show at least thrice… there’s no way you can get all the jokes. By the time you can stop laughing at one line..you have missed two other jokes! 🤣

Benjamin Finkel

To say the characters "grow" over the course of the show is... not entirely true. Growth implies improvement. The characters on this show change.

I have binge-watched the first 4 seasons of this show during lockdown 2020. I think I just stopped bc I started something else and caught up with it instead but I remember having really enjoyed this show....but I don't remember much of it tbh. I just know I enjoyed it :) So, good to revisit it ! :)

Dang, the famous "Dónde está la biblioteca" rap was in episode 2 already!?? In my memory it was much later! I love that nonsensical rap so much. It tickles me that it seems to be like *the* Spanish sentence that English speakers learn first. It is so random and I love it. Then again, story time: Because I studied Modern Languages and Translation Studies, we had to choose a compulsory "non-western alphabet" class, and I took Japanese for three years. (To be fair, I've forgotten all of it because I haven't used it since. Just recently, cleaning up an attic, we found some of my old writing exercises, fully written in kanji *by my own hand, in blue pen*, and I was no longer able to read them. It was so surreal to see my own handwriting and not know what it said!) But anyway, after college, my best friend got a job in Japan, translating for Nintendo. So of course I went to visit him! The sentence we learned first, as students of Japanese, was "atsui, desu-nee!" which means "it's hot today, isn't it?". We learned a whole mini-routine of dialogue just like the one in this episode!! We did exactly the same, coming out to show it in pairs. I've forgotten everything else, but I swear that little dialogue is burned into my memory forever, I practiced it so much. But I always thought it was essentially like the "dónde está la biblioteca" thing, a random, pretty useless bit that you just drill in to get some grammar basics covered. Until... When I was in Japan, I was just walking around in wonder while my friend was at work, and I stopped at a pedestrian crossing. And an old Japanese man stood next to me, looked at me, and exclaimed "atsui, desu-nee!"!!! Omg, I felt like I could crack the Enigma code!! I knew that one!! I knew exactly what to say!!! So I said the little dialogue to the Japanese man, who nodded approvingly and then went about his day, while I floated above the ground, feeling like a language savant. And, for the record, the English sentence most Spanish speakers learn first is equally nonsensical: "My tailor is rich and my mother's in the kitchen". I learned as a kid, so my first contact was Spotty the Dog. "Spotty! Where are you?" I was 3 and I still remember. I'm curious if anyone here has learned a second language and if you can remember what the first bit of dialogue was.

I just wanted to let you know that Community is probably my favorite American sitcom (it's either this or Seinfeld) and I got this Patreon membership just to get early access to your Community reactions. I'm so glad you're reacting to this show!!!
