The reason why all the dance scenes have such dark lighting or that we never really see the dancers face during the dance numbers is that the vast majority of the dancing is being done by body doubles and during the break dance at the end Jennifer Beals is being doubled by a man.

Erin Mileur

Flashdance actually had an important influence on the movie Dirty Dancing. That movies director Emile Ardolino specifically only wanted experienced dancers to avoid the issue of using body doubles.

You would have to be made of stone NOT to sing along.

About the Incline. A few years ago I promised my 14 year old anything they wanted as a reward and they chose to ride the incline. They have an unlimited pass and we rode it non-stop for 2 hours. It's such a cool machine.

Thank goodness he had that policy because then they could have hired any generic good looking dude instead of former dance instructor Patrick Swayze who was perfect.

Never saw this film despite being a 16 year old boy...was a Pink Floyd, Metallica, Depeche Mode and The Cure hybrid so this wasn't my music style. This IS Pittsburgh...as is quickly revealed. I was originally an Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering double major- CMU gave an almost full scholarship so lived in Pittsburgh for 2.5 years before getting sick of the grind and transferring out mid-Junior year. Big culture shock since it was East enough to have NY and Phillie vibes but West enough to be something out of Ohio or Iowa. VERY weird weather...My shampoo FROZE in the dorm bathroom when it was 5 below zero in December of 1984...Downtown was WEIRD, the Opera House around the corner from the Red Light District where that strip club likely was. concentric rings of good and bad neighborhoods leading out to where CMU and U Pitt were...in the 80s the campus was 70% male and 30% female due to all of the STEM majors so I hung with Architects and Acting Students since they had more women... Oakland, Squirrel Hill and Shadyside were VERY nice neighborhoods...haven't benn back since December 1986 so almost 40 years!

I'm glad you liked it. It's kinda fun, I guess. Its an important movie in ìts way and Adrian Lyne has certainly done worse, so there's that. God help you if you get stuck watching 9 1/2 Weeks or Indecent Proposal.

I watched this movie inappropriately young, and I think it flew over my head completely back then. But now every time I think of Flashdance I actually think of Full Monty and how that was part of the inspiration and I think it's cute!

Erin Mileur

Adrian Lyne was not the first choice to direct they actually asked David Cronenberg who declined saying that if he had he would have ended up destroying the movie and orignally attached to the project Brian De Palma who left to make Scarface.

When Beals character mimics the cop who is directing traffic that is an actual cop Vic Cianca a man famous in Pittsburgh for the flamboyant way he directed traffic in the city. He did that for 30 years retiring in 1983. He was nicknamed "Nureyev of the Intersection" and was declared on his retirement by a local paper to be a Pittsburgh icon on par with Fred Rogers and Myron Cope (voice of the Pittsburgh Steelers).

Another ' Burgh celebrity, the man who tells Nick that Alex works for him, at the beginning of the movie was the same actor who played Chef Brockett on Mr. Rogers.

My first introduction to Flashdance without knowing it at the timee was Geri Halliwell's reprise of "It's Raining Men" in 2001. She recreated the audition scene in the clip. Watched it a million times when I was a young girl :D I saw Flashdance before but could'nt really remember it. Cool movie!

Oh geez! This movie is right in the zone for my movie going days, late 70's and early 80's. This movie started a fashion style of off -one-shoulder tops for women. 😏😏

As someone who was born there, I had never heard of him!

I usually go back once a year. It's been a few years since I've been home though

Joe- Were you a teen when you left? I am still scarred by frat Iron City Light beer served to pledges...didn't join any frats just went for the parties during Freshman year. The CMU campus was a bit odd since there were so many transplanted NYers that people were out in the streets cheering when the Mets won the 1986 World Series. I went to opening day at Three Rivers when the Mets were on the road and beat the Pirates in their April 1986 Home Opener and were in 1st place or tied for 1st every day of the season. MY friend and I were in Mets gear and we were chased by 4 or 5 locals who were sitting a couple of rows behind us for about 10 or 15 blocks running at full speed. WE were expecting something like that scene from Good Will Hunting when he got arrested - but they were too drunk and we outran them

If you freeze frame a couple of times you DO see a guy on screen- not quite as bad as a Benny Hill skit were you see a doll or guy with a beard in a dress as a stunt double- but almost
