ah nice!! FYI there is also a West German 1950 film (which itself is based on a book): Das doppelte Lottchen which kicked things off!

dys

I've seen this version I think once as a kid, before the 1998 version came out. I've seen the 98 one several times so I remember it pretty well but don't have much memory of how this one differs.

Ben Gilbert

It was written by Erich Kastner. You can get it on Kindle. Kastner also wrote Emil and the Detectives, which was also made into a movie that was shown on The Wonderful World of Disney.

Lydia

I watched this original version of the movie on VHS growing up. If you were a fan of Saved by the Bell and watched the very 1st season (before even most of the main cast joined), Haley Mills was the high school teacher, Miss Bliss.

2026-09-15 02:00 Hayley Mills was a big Disney star back then. She is also in Pollyanna which you have scheduled for later. (We still refer to someone who is overly cheerful and optimistic as a Pollyanna.) Hayley's sister is actress Juliet Mills and her father was well known British actor John Mills who starred in Great Expectations, Swiss Family Robinson and over a hundred more films. She won a special honorable Juvenile Oscar for Pollyanna.

apparently my preference for this parent trap and the jodie foster freaky friday confirm that i’m gen x. so be it.

Oooh, fun! I grew up watching both this one and the 1998 version and while I deeply prefer the 98 version, I still adore this one too! There are also at least 2 (maybe 3?) sequels to this movie. The second one has the girls grown up (still played by Hayley Mills).

This was a staple of Sunday night Disney movies of the week for many years when I was a kid. The duplicate work in this movie reminds me of Orphan Black, and that is a modern tv show with one actress playing multiple roles.

Jonathan

This is my favorite Disney movie, the romcom plot with the parents is what makes the movie and the supporting cast is fantastic in this. Great collection of classic movies actors. This was Brian Keith's first comedic role and he got a sitcom out of it.

Jonathan

There are 3 sequels to this movie with Hayley Mills from the late 80s and early 90s. The first 2 sequels are great and if I can find a decent quality copy it might end up on the reaction list.

Jonathan

Walt Disney was at his peak in the 60s and wanted to stretch himself. He has a hitchcock style movie he made also starring Hayley Mills that will end up on the watch list at some point. If Walt hadn't died in 68 who knows how he would have reinvented Disney in the 70s

Jonathan

The writer/Director of this movie also did How to Succeed in Business. The head of the boys camp in this movie along with acting had a career as a conductor and conducted the scores to multiple 50s and 60s movies you've seen on the channel.

Jonathan

Alot of the ranch scenes in the movie were filmed on Walt Disney's ranch in California. The setting used for the camp was later turned into a family resort after it's use in this movie.

Jonathan

Hayley Mills is British. The body double was from California and was teaching Hayley how to talk like an American between scenes similar to the scene in the movie. Hayleys father is Sir John Mills who has made over 120 movies. He has a cameo as a caddy in the scene on the golf course so he had an excuse to play golf during filming.

Jonathan

This kicked off the twins movie/tv show trope. It hasn't been done much before and they were only planning a few double shots in the movie till they realized how good it looked and reworked scenes to have more scenes with both "twins"

ScarlettMi

"Let's Get Together" was written by the Sherman Brothers (of Mary Poppins fame) for The Parent Trap. It was sung by Hayley Mill and Hayley Mills. That's how the record was released with her having done both tracks. It peaked at number 8.

vala p

Let's Get Together was the song Susie and Wilfred were dancing to at the camp which may be why it sounded familiar later in the movie when the girls were performing it.

Ben Gilbert

For outdoor backgrounds on a sound stage they used a rear projection system, projecting a pre-recorded image on a translucent screen behind the actors.

This is my favorite version of Parent Trap. It was the first one I saw since I'm in my mid 40s. It was how I discovered how fabulous and beautiful Maureen O'Hara is. I put up with a John Wayne movie just to see her. I also love Haley Mills. According to IMDB she is still working. The most recent thing I've seen with her is a British TV Show that takes place in South Africa. I think it was on during the late 2000s/early 2010s.

acidnova

In the third one (I think) there are triplets played by real life triplets (no body doubling needed). Interesting connection though: Hayley Mills played a teacher in the early seasons of Saved by the Bell when they're in middle school. In the later seasons, one of the cast members who plays Tori is played by Leanna Creel who is one of the triplets.

acidnova

Thanks once again for your reactions! Glad you had fun and I look forward to when you watch the Lindsay Lohan version and can compare/contrast them. I know I broke my streak to give you movies you've actually heard of, lol, but it was worth it! If you ever get to see the original Miracle on 34th Street, Maureen O'Hara plays the mom in that one. As far as Lohan goes, funnily enough one of her other earlier movies that was a huge part of her rise to stardom was the remake of Freaky Friday. The original is from the 70s and starred a young Jodie Foster. And per your discussion about Disney output in the 70s, well, Freaky Friday was one of the big ones they did.

Jonathan

Yes the triplets were in the third one and the 4th movie which was a pilot movie for a proposed series. That series was not picked up so Disney made Good Morning Miss Bliss, which was also cancelled but the classroom. Stuff was used for Saved by the Bell. The scripts for the Miss Bliss show had a lot more of Hayley then the kids.

Ben Gilbert

John Mills also won a Supporting Actor Oscar for Ryan's Daughter in 1970.

TalynOne

Hello fellow gen xer, same boat.

Ben Gilbert

The Moon-Spinners from 1964 starred Hayley, Peter McEnery, and Eli Wallach in a romantic thriller set in Crete. It's sort of a Disney Hitchcock film. I liked pretty much all of Hayley's Disney films; Pollyanna, Parent Trap, In Search of The Castaways, Summer Magic, the Moon-Spinners, and That Darn Cat!. She did some good non-Disney films also, like Whistle Down the Wind, The Chalk Garden and The Trouble with Angels.

Lola Lirola

Same here!! And it's the parents. After all, it's called "The Parent Trap", isn't it? And in the modern version, Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson are bland as hell, and their animosity is bitter. But in this one, their animosity is fiery and passionate. And Maureen O'Hara just kills it.

Cristy

Thank you so much, acidnova! I grew up watching this on repeat (and the Parent Trap 2 and 3), I have no idea how the tapes survived. Hayley Mills is just so delightful. I always wanted to live on Susan's ranch.

nj

that darn cat was one of my favorites growing up - probably in part because d.c. was siamese and we had two siamese cats and my aunt had three. much better representation than lady and the tramp. the remake with christina ricci was the beginning of my “don’t remake, re-release” campaign (to be followed later by “not everything needs to be made into a musical”), but i probably wouldn’t have been as salty about the remake if they’d kept d.c. siamese. 🤷‍♀️

JENNIFER E

As a Bostonian, Kevin's "Boston is for casual hookups only!" was my cry laugh of the day.

elle

Good catch on the John Wayne parallel. I’ve known this film since the late 70s and never made the connection. And, given that Wayne link, I guess the film was trying to ‘suggest’ this was a sequel to The Quiet Man (1952), which starred O’Hara and Wayne. That film hasn’t aged well, but it’s a must-see nonetheless, if only to glory in Maureen O’Hara’s beauty.

Calbah

Same. Even if I have no plans to watch the movie, I get mildly annoyed if I see the newer versions on TV. Also true of A Little Princess, even though I have nothing against the newer one.

Calbah

I literally just watched The Birds yesterday and the actress who plays Miss Inch (the camp director) is the bird shop lady at the beginning of that movie.

two pennies no waiting

Thank you acidnova! Such an under seen film and I'm so grateful you picked it!

two pennies no waiting

I cackled at the broke back crossover story you guys were telling lmao I'm excited for your reaction to the remake too. Personally, I think of them like the book vs movie of Ready Player One. While they are essentially the same story, they are different enough to be thoroughly enjoyed independent of the other.

Joy M

The Trouble with Angels is a great Hayley Mills movie.

acidnova

That was cracking me up, too! It may end up being my headcanon for Heckie on any future rewatches!

ScarlettMi

This is my Parent Trap movie, and I love Hayley Mills in Pollyanna. For Freaky Friday, I like Jodie Foster’s performance for sure, but I think the story is better in the Lohan remake.

Actuarial Lurker

Not only did Peggy and Joey do a "John and Marcia" routine isn S4E1 buy when Sally cut her hair while the RN was babysitting in S4E5 while Don was out on a date and Betty later slapped Sally, the Nurse wrote it off as "Sally wanting to look older like Haley Mills"

Actuarial Lurker

Nice and dark Kevin: "Six of these girls are getting pregnant tonight" Joe: "Most of these guys are going to go to Vietnam" Kevin: "Nah, they're rich and White" later: Kevin: "You smell like greenbacks and strip club, Grandpa" Kevin: "THAT'S Dad's secret" Joe: "He's not really your Uncle" That's why you have the best reaction channel....

Actuarial Lurker

Having a kid play two roles as "twins" gets a bit much after a while... I wonder whether Patty Duke playing her "Identical cousin" in her 1960s sitcom a few years after this was an homage or an inside joke at the audience... What would be interesting would be to have one of them commit crimes while the other is in public somewhere else and they can claim they have the wrong suspect if caught later on....

Actuarial Lurker

Disney DID have subversive content for the adults was the not so subtle implication that birth mother's bra was a bit larger than that of the fiancee?

dys

I'm a millennial but right on the line (as someone 20 years junior to Actuarial Lurker) where I was old enough to see this version of the Parent Trap as a kid, but young enough that seeing the Lindsay Lohan version in theaters completely supplanted it in my brain, but also still old enough that the Jodie Foster version of Freaky Friday is the definitive version of my childhood.

cruzinbosco

Yeah... Other Mommy is the scariest trailer I've ever seen. I saw it months ago and it still has a hold on me. I can't wait to see the movie!! It's so rare for a movie to actually scare me.

Youtalkingtome

I want the version of the movie where Heckie and Mitch get married, and the girlstalk their parents to living in the same city for the sake of sharing custody. Everyone wins!

Ben Gilbert

With Rosalind Russell as the mother superior.

Ben Gilbert

O'Hara was one of the best actresses never to have been nominated for an Oscar.

Actuarial Lurker

So did the film Twister "borrow" the idea of the spoiled woman who can't handle roughing it?

AmyAin'tMyName

I'm only an hour in and I've cracked up several times. They were on fire for this movie.

Carl Wilson

Just at the beginning here but the "John! Marsha!" routine in Mad Men doesn't come from Parent Trap - it was a soap opera parody track that comedian Stan Freberg (who was also in advertising) did in the '50s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEnRePOf708

Carl Wilson

Your running Heckie joke was very funny!

Youtalkingtome

I will not be watching that trailer again...it stuck with me lol

Willow

The John /Marsha thing was from a novelty single that was popular at the time. Comedy used to be bonkers.

Dani

Oh I LOVE this movie. I love pretty much all the Haley Mills movies from this time period. And Maureen O'Hara! So great. I'll have to get in in time for you to see her in Miracle on 34th Street, if you haven't already watched it, and for some unknown reason my favorite John Wayne/Maureen O'Hara movie is McClintok which is a real hoot.

Dani

Also you guys definitely know Hayley Mills. She's Miss Bliss in Saved by the Bell! Obviously when she's much older but still.
