abed is such a great comedic autistic coded character, this is one of the best abed episodes (there's a few great abed focused ones!)

Lyla

This is a great ensemble show. Some characters with not huge parts to play so far, will get more of their time to shine later on! Including Chevy's character Pierce. And yes, Abed is definitely not intentionally cruel, but he is definitely quite oblivious and a little tactless sometimes. He's one of my favourite sitcom characters ever though, he's got some truly brilliant moments and episodes where he is at the centre, which I think you'll really appreciate. Particularly re Danny Pudi's incredible talent and versatility as an actor. Loved the Dead Poets Society parodying in this one. Happily, this is only the start of the show doing funny takes on beloved classics. I can't wait for you to watch more!

I keep being surprised by how early we get very key elements of the show! In my mind, the first season (well, the first two thirds of the season) were just spinning wheels and finding their feet, but no, actually there's a lot of it already running! This is being such a blast, I haven't seen the show in years, and Joe and Kevin's belly laughs are making it so much better already.

Lola Lirola

Aaaaah! Wednesdays are getting too good! I don't know if I should start here or on Buffy!! I'm on a Chidi level of difficult decisions! My steak is too juicy, my lobster too buttery!!

I don't know exactly when in the show's run the rest of the cast really soured on Chevy, but whatever your thoughts on him personally are, he definitely wasn't phoning it in here.

Carl Wilson

lol I had that same feeling!

God I love that they show Abed as more than just some awkward caricature of an autistic person. Yes he falls into some of the stereotypes but then is clearly breaking so many of them at the same time, he is such a multifaceted character. Likewise as a fellow autistic person whose special interests also involve media, I relate to him more than most fictional characters. What he did may have been fucked up, but damn is it not satisfying to see him humble Britta’s self righteous condescension a bit. As well meaning as Britta is, she is so far the rudest to Abed besides Pierce.

Carl Wilson

To be fair to Abed (but yes, not to Britta), it was a documentary assignment, so he couldn't just use actors and a script. I love that his film is at once conceptually kind of great (one can imagine an actual documentary that somehow used that superimposition technique to tell a family story) and on every other level terrible.

Carl Wilson

Chase is absolutely great as Pierce for a *lot of Community (I do love that sneeze monologue here) and the character gets lots of interesting development. But off-screen there are too many stories from too many places about what an asshole he is for it to be just misunderstood jokes - it's just massive ego. I think it got particularly bad on this show because it started demanding longer and longer hours that tested all of the cast's endurance (partly for justified reasons you'll understand as we go along, but also because of the showrunner's own eccentricities, including finishing scripts late and constantly revising them). So in response Chevy started acting out worse and worse, and tensions eventually came to a head.

My favorite line of the episode is when the random coffee deliverer says "... that guy's your dad?" Lol absolutely hilarious

Abed has always been my favourite by far and the fact that they portrayed him so beautifully and made him so relatable as a person instead of a caricature always made me so happy.

Benjamin Finkel

Annie having a crush on Troy was a plot point from the first episode, where she clearly still harbored her high school feelings for him.

The Ginger Historian

Hopefully Joe and Kevin will start seeing him as more than just a caricature. Like maybe they won't laugh all the way through his film or say "Yeah!" when Jeff says things like "Abed's not normal." As an autistic person, it's difficult to watch people do stuff like that

The Ginger Historian

Holding an autistic character to the same standard as every other character, especially one who has been clearly poorly parented with little to no support for his diagnosis, just feels icky to me. Everyone else is here because of choices that they made - Abed is not. It's like the first episode when Jeff lumped Abed "having Asperger's" as being in any way similar to the actual character flaws of the other characters. Signs of a disability should not be treated the same way as bad behavior from a non-disabled person.

Neill Shaughness

A fascinating bit of Chevy Chase trivia. Community is the only show he's ever participated in for more than a single season (including his own show which was cancelled after one season). The cast and crew of Community put up with Chevy longer than anyone else in Hollywood by far.

Neill Shaughness

The Chevy reputation I've heard isn't that he doesn't care, but that he has a very mean sense of humor and an inflated ego. And that reputation goes all the way back to the first season of SNL

You have enough super patrons now that you should make a graphic. Or hold up a physical sign. I cannot afford to be a super patron, but if we want to give them the thanks they are due, it’s hard to recognize and acknowledge them when you’re speed running through their names at the beginning of each video.

Youtalkingtome

We are 3 episodes in and just meeting Abed. We don't really have all the nuances of his character yet.

Jamie Morgan

I'm basically glued to their content at this point! Angel and Only Murders on Tuesdays, Buffy and Community on Thursdays, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Saturdays.

Piece and Troy's characters both have kind of weird starts to the show because they immediately pivoted their ideas once the show started. Initially they wanted Troy and Pierce to be the duo but Donald Glover and Danny Pudi had such immediate chemistry that they pivoted that way. Takes them a minute to re-find Pierce's direction but once they do he is a great character (despite what Chevy was getting up to behind the scenes lol)

‘This is no way to teach accounting’ man I love this show!

Lola Lirola

I've watched this show three times before, and didn't realize that's what they're supposed to be learning until now! I thought it was supposed to be English Lit or something! 🤣

Nihidea

Seeing the way this show makes you guys laugh is making me appreciate how good and funny it is all over again. Very glad to see you enjoying it so much!

Tina

Right there with you, Ginger Historian.

You can see it in everything he does, including that first season of SNL, though it's a bit muddled in that everyone was a bit cruel then, doing way to many drugs, etc, But you can really tell Chase is at the epicenter of it, comes out in Caddyshack and even playing opposite sweet Goldie Hawn in Foul Play. Could never stand watching him in anything since then.
