A ships captain cannot marry someone on the high seas unless he is already a licensed justice of peace or minister that is just something they made for movies or TV.

Erin Mileur

For both movies whoever decided on the custody arraignment is they dumbest set of lawyers or judge in history.

I did some Googling after you released the 1961 version. The "Best Interest of the Child" doctrine in divorces had not emerged in the early 1960s. Older teens were asked which parent they wanted to be with, while younger teens were left with the same-sex parent so the father could teach the boy to "be a man" and the mother could teach the girl "how to be a lady". It seems that toddlers were assigned to the mother due to "homemaker" stereotypes and men being at office jobs or factories and unable to handle school or day care and a career. In the case of violence, mental instability or lack of earning power the kids would go with the parent who was financially sound or mentally stable since they at least realized a child abuser should not have custody...

GemmaBeeBee

Right? I gave birth but I only need one of them. 😔 wtf. Also - I don’t know if anyone mentioned this but the whole film is based on a book which I read as a kid - Lottie and Lisa. When I watched this film I realised immediately!

Erin Mileur

How long do you think they stay married this time. Because there is a good chance that once the romance wears off the same things that made get divorced might start to rear their ugly head again.

I let an 11 year old cut my hair and it turned out much worse than this.

I get removing the spanking references, but I've always thought that the slap was pivotal. That said in no uncertain terms that she was a bad guy. It's probably why people who only grew up with this one are easier on Meredith. Don't get me wrong, though. I love the Lohan version. Wore out the DVD back in the day.

Youtalkingtome

It's amazing that the girls in these films are expert stylists!

Youtalkingtome

Thank you for sharing that! In all those situations, this would be a damn weird case.

Youtalkingtome

I have known 2 couples who divorced and remarried. And they both divorced again.

that girl

It was the same actress playing Vicky!

I've seen this movie several times and I totally forgot that the twins have the same birthday as me... and I'm almost exactly the same age as Lindsay Lohan (though I checked, her birthday is actually in July, so I get to enjoy being not-40-yet for a little longer). I remembered Lindsay Lohan's posh English accent as being really good, especially for a child actor in her debut role, but wasn't sure how well it would hold up not having seen the movie in many years. I'm American but I can at least spot the worst fake British accents from American actors and it still sounds like she nails it. I especially love the contrast with Hallie doing an obviously bad mockery of Annie's accent in the poker scene. I'm sure any Brits here can point out where she isn't perfect but it's still an impressive performance. Though maybe we just have low expectations for that when British or Aussie or Kiwi child actors nail American accents all the time. The cellphones not working at camp does make it clear right off we're in the 90s... I was a camp counselor maybe 5 years after this at a camp that wasn't that far out in the boonies and cell service was still pretty spotty then. It really wasn't until more like 2010 that you had consistently reliable service even on the big networks when you were just a few miles from town out in the woods even in a relatively densely populated area like western MA.

You are right that Joanna Barnes played Vicky in the original and in this one.

acidnova

Wow, thanks for doing this so quickly after the other one! And since it was still so fresh, I'm glad you both picked up many of the repeated themes and scenes in both films. Once you see both movies multiple times, it becomes very evident just how much dialogue is also reused. You are also now probably the first reactors who recognized the Vicky cameo which, honestly, was reason enough for me to purchase both movies! I love both movies but there are definite plusses and minuses to both. I prefer the camp antics from the first one because they're more realistic but I also really enjoyed fleshing out the Nanny role and introducing Martin (even if that meant cutting Heckie). We also don't have the Grandmother or Reverend Mosby in this one although Meredith speaks to "Reverend Mosby" on the phone. Oh, and the actor who played Meredith had a small role in Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion as the one who became a famous fashion editor and compliments their outfits at the end.

I am a purist--hate remakes. But while I will always love the original, having grown up with those classic Disney films, I really think this remake was excellent. One point was Lohan did the accent switching better than Hayley, although it was probably not as empasized back then for an actress of her age. She was also younger than Hayley and her performance was remarkable. I loved the addition of Martin and Chessy. And yes, Joanna Barnes played the original Vicki and Meredith's mother. Very cool.

Isn't that why you Xerox something, so everyone can have a copy?

vala p

Lindsay was a very talented kid.

vala p

I love that in real life the Chessy and Meredith actresses are BFFs. Something about being odious to someone in a film must bond you for life. 😄

dys

You have to allow it for the movie's plot to work, I'm able to suspend my disbelief because I really like this movie. In reality I'm pretty sure it is impossible to have parents be simultaneously great parents and also able to split up their children who are identical twins and pretend they never met their twin or the other parent.

dys

Ssh we're not supposed to think about things like that in this kind of feel-good movie :)

dys

This is also unlocking a childhood memory I couldn't quite square watching your reaction to the 60s version, I think the one and only time I saw the 60s version as a small child before the 1998 one came out (which I saw in theaters at basically the same age as the twins here) was in an inn or rental cabin on a family trip to Lake Winnipesaukee, NH earlier in the 90s. Growing up in MA, my dad used to run in the Lake Winnipesaukee road race most years. He passed away just a few months ago and getting little reminders like this is wild.

Jonathan

This is a good remake, they stuck to the original script enough that the original writer/director was credited. Hayley Mills was wanted to make an appearance in this but couldn't make the schedule work. I still prefer the original I think the original has a bit more bite to it while this seemed much more PG.

Jonathan

Originally this was meant to be an Olsen twins movie but they were filming their ill fated second sitcom at the time. Michelle Tractenberg was another finalist to play the twins but Nancy Myers said she was looking for mini Diane Keatons and Lindsey better fit that.

I🖤Kraken

My first time seeing this version and I'm definitely Team Haley. The original was so much more layered and feisty; funny, fast, and furious. Everyone had agency and their own point of view. Maureen O'Hara is a force of nature. Bless lil' Lindsay & her freckles but she always comes off flat to me, after seeing her in four Disney movies. I don't think she can act and she has no screen presence. And the Disneyfication of Natasha Richardson into Emma Thompson on Xanax is just hilarious! I think this would have worked better as an animated film. The saccharin serenity and lack of conflict might have put my teeth on less of an edge. 🎶 Let's get together. Yeah, yeah, yeah!🎶 Thanks, AcidNova. Fun comparison!

acidnova

There's a video where Chessy (Lisa Ann Walter) was learning about her ancestry and discovered that her ancestors and Meredith's ancestors lived only two blocks from each other. It's a really sweet reveal. Also Lisa has twin sons in real life! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7QqAodQEhY

Lindsay Lohan was phenomenal in this movie. When I watched this as a kid, I actually thought there were two of her :)

vala p

I'm really glad this wasn't an Olsen twins joint. That would have been awful, dude.

Skinny_Obelix

I don't know where I love Martin the most, in this or the West Wing

Erica

I saw this in theaters when it came out! I was 9, and won tickets from the radio station 😂 (if anyone is old enough to remember when that was a thing). We were already fans of the original (we had a handful of hayley mills movies on tape), so my older sister and i went. We were so excited bc we didn't go to the movies a lot, and we loved it :)

Erica

Btw, did martin remind anyone else of stanley tucci's character in the princess diaries? He definitely killed it here, i might look inti some of his other roles

acidnova

Stanley Tucci wasn't in the Princess Diaries. Do you mean Hector Elizondo?

Erica

I must have lmao. Ive only seen it once, years ago. But the fact that i thought it was him should be taken as a compliment in the highest regard

cruzinbosco

Nancy Meyers' daughters are named Hallie and Annie, hence the "For Hallie" credit at the end of this movie. She also has "For Annie" at the end of Baby Boom (1987). Another favorite movie of mine. ❤️

Carl Wilson

You clearly must do both Freaky Fridays now! (As with the Parent Traps, I have never seen either of them before.)

Carl Wilson

You missed it, but Annie gave her passport to Hal before they made the switch, so don't worry about Interpol.

Carl Wilson

Chessy is one of the teachers on Abbott Elementary, which is a very fine sitcom, full of great character actors, and she's fabulous on it. I'm surprised I haven't seen Martin in more things, he's so great here.

Annie519

It’s funny you bring up the Olsen twins because not too long after this came out they made their own version of The Parent Trap called It Takes Two. But they do changes things up enough where it’s not a complete rip off. Such as a big one being that in this film they are not separated twins, they are strangers who just so happen to look exactly alike. I actually have always really enjoyed, I grew up with it. I think it would be a fun reaction for them.

Stephanie P.

Freaky Friday remake is definitely another movie where Lohan shines

Youtalkingtome

I'm still stuck between the two. I think I do like the original more because we saw it first, this was so much fun though

BrummaGen

I'd only ever seen the original, so it was interesting to rewatch that with you guys then see this remake so soon after. I think I prefer the original as regards the performance of the 'twins' - but that may be my British bias: I can't tell how well or otherwise Hayley is doing the Boston vs Californian accents, but I can hear a slight 'trying too hard' in Lindsay's prim well-to-do English accent that makes it sound just a bit off. Also there were a few Americanisms in the speech of the English twin when being herself (eg the use of 'check' when ticking off a list) which were more jarring to me than the overly formal expressions they called out when she was pretending to be the American twin. Aside from several American English linguistic usages on the English side (from the adults not just from Lohan in either role) there were also a few things that seemed unusual or abnormal for an English family. Oreos were mentioned, a most unlikely choice for a little English girl about 10 years before they became well known in the UK. And 6 week long residential summer camps are not really a thing in the UK. I suppose you could argue that's why the mum chose to send her daughter to the camp in the US - and she was clearly wealthy enough to do so. None of these are major things, and I did enjoy the film and especially seeing the different way the adult relationships were portrayed (and the addition of the Martin and Chessy relationship. But it makes me wonder why they chose to relocate one of the separated twins to London instead of keeping them in Boston or another East Coast setting - it makes the plot seem more contrived to bring them together, as well as adding the challenge of getting a plausibe accent and other details in the UK setting.

Jane1967

As stated above, Joanna Barnes was Vicky in the 1961 version...but you may also remember her as Gloria Upson (Patrick's fiancee) in Auntie Mame 😂😂

Liam Mcfarlane

"I've only seen 2 Lindsay Lohan movies" Okay well now you absolutely have to add Freaky Friday to that list, Lindsay and Jamie Lee Curtis are both so good in that movie and the sequel was surprisingly fun too
