Another masterfully written and acted film of Woody Allen’s. I had never seen this before and am glad I watched alongside you both. Helps to maintain an honest perspective.

This was fun. I haven't seen this film since it came out. Two of my favorite Woody Allen films are Manhatten Murder Mystery and Bullets Over Broadway.

I am pretty concerned that since this 1997 film has a whole schtick about "sex with the patient" at the 1:06 time stamp that this could be a thinly veiled reference to the 1991 allegations about his step-daughter...if he IS trying to slide by an excuse that "she was just there as a temptation of opportunity just like the wife's patient "...then I'm pretty much vomiting in my mouth right now....

Really enjoyed this! The bits from Woody's character's books are like reading a short story collection. The language is also a lot saltier than I usually expect from Woody Allen movies, which is a lot of fun.

Yeah, there was WAY more profanity than I was used to for Woody Allen's films.

Even if you (understandably) take issue with Allen, the work from the rest of the cast here is worth watching.

The c-words etc. were out of character with the earlier films and may be because he was bitter as he was in the process of being "cancelled" which happened more in 1998-1999

I'm so glad that you guys enjoyed this film. It's not to everybody's taste, as it's pretty dark and cynical. If you watch it again, pay attention in the last scene when he's dreaming of all the characters coming back to honor him. You'll see a woman with short dark hair, surrounded by a multiracial group of children. I think that's clearly meant to represent Mia - this film was made shortly after their breakup. To me, the whole film is sort of an apologia. He's saying "I know I'm a terrible person, and it's largely because I just don't know how to be better - I only know how to be a good artist." I can see how many people would be disgusted by that, but I think it made for a really compelling film. And some of the vignettes are truly memorable. The one with Kirstie Alley is particularly hilarious, and the callback of the out of focus character when that happens to Harry, with Cookie talking him down, always feels very moving to me. Loved watching this again with you. Thanks.

Judy Davis doing a Julia Louis-Dreyfus impression and Kirstie Alley's furious therapy session was just hilarious! They say this movie was Allen's dark, satirical response to all of his critics. He creates neurotic, Jewish matronly cliches and he always falls in love with the blonde shiksa. He never has any black people in his movies and he's unfaithful and neurotic and narcissistic and overly critical of religion, etc, etc... I'll leave all that to the Epstein class historians. (Pray we make it that far.)😜 He makes my skin crawl but this is a really, really well structured movie with insightful character analysis and a great conclusion. Cookie the hooker has been my nightmare fuel for 20 years but--upon reviewing, it was the most sympathetic character played by a very lovely actor. When someone tells you who they are, believe them: Allen is the devil. But, damn it, his movies are so well made. I hate myself. I gotta go lay down now. 😆

It "rhymed" with the other films you saw and seemed to be looking for excuses for his own behavior so a kind of lack of responsibility cop out self-analysis
