Joe Johnston is the designer of the Millennium Falcon co-designer of Boba Fett won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects for Raiders of the Lost Ark and funny you mentioning the Iron Giant because he was the designer of the Iron Giant.

Funny thing about the plane he fly's the Gee Bee it was infamous for the number of fatal crashes that occurred in it. Earning it the nicknames "Killer Bees", "The Widow maker", and "The Iron Coffin". This was mostly due to limited visibility, aerodynamic flutter, issues with center of gravity, and just being hard to fly even for an experienced pilot. Jimmy Doolittle was the only pilot with the ability to fly it safely.

The nightclub singer at the club is actress Melora Hardin who is most famous as Jan Levinson on The Office.

-1990s Jennifer Connelly was something else. -The Mob was a big part of port security on the East coast during WW2. They worked with the Feds to ensure no Germans infiltrated the port, in return they turned a blind eye to the mob's "work"

I love this movie so much. It had this unfortunate timing of being released right in between Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and Terminator 2: Judgement Day all released within 4 weeks of each other not to mention City Slickers, Thelma and Louise, and Point Break which were all within the same month and a half... I think it was just a little too old fashioned for audiences with such stiff competition from the other movies around it. Billy Campbell never really took off on the big screen but he had notable guest appearances on lots of TV shows such as Star Trek: The Next Generation and Frasier before landing a staring roll in the show Once and Again and later The 4400. Disney has tossed around the idea in the past decade of rebooting it. There was a rumor that they might do a Tuskagee airmen type take on it and have a black lead back around 2019 which had all the fucking internet trolls screaming get woke go broke at the rumors. I hate the internet.

The films screenwriters Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo also together created, wrote, produced and directed for the tv shows Sentinel, Viper and the 90s Flash. Also made a really fun 80s sci-fi b WW2 Zone troopers and were two of the credited screenwriters on Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods. Danny Bilson is also the father of actress Rachel Bilson.

This was a fun movie to see in theaters. Disney hoped to make this a franchise but the movie was part of the early 90s Disney live action slump where they made good movies no one saw. I met Billy Campbell about a year later during filming of Gettysburg and had him sign my Rocketeer promo book I had bought. He started on Dynasty and thought he was getting his big break as a lead on Star Trek but he got passed over for Jonathan Frakes and then he did a critically acclaimed drama for ABC that they stuck on Friday Nights after Sports Night when no one was watching, but he's a character actor that always works pretty steady.

Billy Campbell was also in: Enough, alongside Jennifer Lopez.

This, The Shadow (1994), and The Phantom (1996) are the best campy, fun, classic comic style movies. They make a great marathon. Dick Tracey (1990) could be included in the list but it does lean much more on the cartoony side. Also, who doesn’t like Stargate?! That is a fantastic movie.

Great pick!

The Blimp is on a good will tour with a planned stop in LA. It was mentioned in the premovie reel they saw. So air defense wouldn't be concerned it was prearranged they could fly to LA.

Dick Tracy absolutely another fun one! Rocketeer is special for me though.

Referenced at the time in Casablanca: “There are certain parts of New York I would advise the Germans not to invade.”

Lothar is inspired by Rondo Hatton, a journalist who turned to acting when his face was disfigured by acromegaly, making quite a name for himself playing tough guys and monsters.

Ben Gilbert

I knew the timeline was off, but when he first appeared in the shadows I checked to see if it was Hatton anyway. I've seen pictures of him when he was 20. He was a handsome young man.

Youtalkingtome

Wow what a wild month and a half. If I had a Time Machine, I'd be at the movies every weekend. I would watch that reboot, that sounds awesome

Youtalkingtome

I'm glad he still get's work because he really has leading man potential

Ben Gilbert

I saw him first in the PBS miniseries Tales of the City with Laura Linney and that what I mainly associate him with, but he has worked steadily since then.

Daniel Andersen

It's a very flimsy movie, but it was intended as a family film and has the same feel as The Phantom and those 90s movies, that was a huge part of my childhood. Also funny you mention conspiracy theory. Sinclair is supposed to be if the conspiracy theory were true, that Errol Flynn was a fascist.

Post Batman’89, Hollywood studios were green lighting lesser known comic book or graphic novel adaptations. The studios were going for the pre-WWII art deco aesthetic, Dick Tracy, The Rocketeer, The Shadow and The Phantom. Dick Tracy was the only film that was a box office success. I did see this film in the theaters and had the Nintendo video game.

Another Melora Hardin movie where she plays a similar character you have to watch just for the pure Disney 90s Halloween fun is Tower of Terror!

Oh man. This is a perfect movie. There isn't a single second of wasted film, and they achieved absolutely everything they set out to do. I saw this movie as a kid, I must've been 10 years old, and it was responsible for catapulting me out of watching mostly cartoons and falling in love with "real" films. Definitely got my first Hollywood crush on Jennifer Connelly. I think this is also the first movie I ever saw where I read the book first. They wrote the book and the screenplay at the same time, so they're basically 1:1. You guys mentioned the director also did Captain America right around the time that Cliff rolled up on his Harley. I was curious, it's not exactly the same bike that Steve Rogers rode, but look at em side by side... pretty close. The GeeBee is a real racing airplane, it's basically a giant engine cowling with little stubby wings and a seat. The original plane had 535 horsepower and was incredibly difficult to fly. There are replicas of this model and other GeeBees still showing up at airshows, one was at OshKosh this year.

Michael Bennett

Yeah, Stargate is awesome. People are weird.

Youtalkingtome

I really like that aesthetic. It's a really fun brand of camp
