Speaking of Ewan McGregor he has an older brother named Colin who for 20 years was a fighter pilot in the RAF who's call sign was Obi-Two.

I think this might be the last great movie Tim Burton made. I love that the color palette is so different than his usual style, love the cast and every performance, and the music is wonderful throughout. Still, it's a difficult watch for me. My dad loved telling tall tales and be the center of attention. He loved me but him being so self-centered means we still had a rocky relationship. He died of lung cancer three years ago. So yeah, this all hits very close to home.

I think this is the most heartfelt movie Burton has done. Not that others don't have heart but this one is particularly special. I've only watched it a few times but once Will starts telling the final story, the tears start flowing and they don't stop. I voted for this one in the poll and I'm so happy it won and that you both appreciated the movie so much. If there's another Burton movie that I would recommend, it would be Ed Wood. It's not on the same level emotionally (I don't think any of his other movies top Big Fish in that regard) but it is a lovely tribute to the weirdos who love to tell stories.

Clare Manion

It's been such a long time since I've seen this movie, I forgot how good it is! The fairytale elements are wonderful, as is the love story (the daffodil thing always gets me), but at its core the father-son story is absolutely everything. Agreed, probably the most deeply human story Tim Burton has ever put to film.

I just noticed that in your credits below the video, you put "baby Miley Cyrus" lol

im sorry but the second batman movie is very worth seeing. and as a kid it was a favorite of mine (thank you michelle pfeiffer for everything you awakened in me) . you should definitely watch it. maybe one of those insomia night movies.

Mathilde

The novel is called Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions and it's pretty close to the movie. I really liked it, it's presented like a collection of tales out of order, it's well worth the read. Surprisingly, this was only nominated for 1 Oscar (original score) but I too believe at least Finney and Lange deserved nominations. I was a big Burton fan when I was a teen, watched all his movies until like 2012. I think the only other one that has a similar vibe to Big Fish would be Edward Scissorhands. It shares some of the whimsy and lightness, but it's less subtle, more... eighties-intense in a way? (even though it's technically a 90's movie). My personal favorite is Sleepy Hollow though (for the aesthetics, the campy humor and the suspense)

Burton is rough for me too. But Beetlejuice (the original) will always be near and dear to my heart.

I've seen this movie a few times, I was a teenager when it came out, but I'm gearing myself up to watch it again after my dad passed this year. My relationship with my dad was almost the opposite of Billy Crudup's character's relationship with his dad in this movie... I got to know how much my dad meant to his friends and patients and community the whole time I was growing up, while he never quite realized how much he meant to everyone.

Ben Gilbert

Finney was nominated for an Academy Award 5 times, but never won, for Tom Jones (1964), Murder on the Orient Express (1975), The Dresser (1984), Under the Volcano (1985), and Erin Brockovich.. He also won several BAFTA, Tony and Olivier Awards My boss's son played the young Ewan McGregor when they went to see the witch. He said the actor who played Karl was really the nicest person but he had a lot of pain in his joints because of the condition that made him grow so big.

Ben Gilbert

I love Mars Attacks for Lukas Haas, Sylvia Sydney, and Slim Whìtman. Of Tim Burton‘s movies I liked Sweeney Todd, Big Fish, Ed Wood, Batman, and The Corpse Bride.

I get you, Mathilde. It's a difficult watch for me as well. I didn't have as rocky a relationship with my dad, who died in June this year of brain cancer, but it was never perfect. I would still trade anything to have a day to talk to him again as the person he was at even 80 years old, seeing him lose everything he was that last year before he died at 86 was the worst thing I've ever been through.

tim burton is very hit or miss for me. but this one is great. i love the style, the colors, the story, and ive always really liked ewan mcgregor. i regret to say id totally be the son in this movie. the idea of having a parent who never tells you anything real, where you never know what really happened or what is or isnt an exageration would drive me crazy. thats not someone you can get close to. theres always a story between you keeping distance. as if the real him was too small to show to people. and yeah having someone who always has to be the center of attention, the center of conversation would be someone i would avoid heavily. i am glad they managed to patch things up in the movie. i think it reality thatd be harder if the person isnt dying right then. but yeah burton is sometimes good sometimes...not for me. i also hated mars attacks. but i love the batman movies, edward scissorhands is great, and i think his style lent itself well to sweeney todd. beetlejuice scared the crap out of me as a kid but thats pretty fun too.

The end always gets me too. 😭

This is by far my favourite Tim Burton film - like many commenting here, it seems he can be a little hit and miss for me - it’s been a long while since I watched this one and I only just realised that the guy playing the banjo in Spectre is the one and only Billy Redden from Deliverance…I guess that was why the town was giving off “squeal like a pig” vibes.

If i had a nickel for every time David Denman plays a man who is engaged to a woman who will leave him for many reasons, but mostly because of another man who is kind of inappropriate with how pushy he is, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice 😂

Erica

On Karl - he was played by Matthew McGrory, who was 7ft6in. He passed in 2005 at age 32 of conestive heart failure (taller people statistically don't live as long, and are more likely to succumb to disease). He had a great acting career, largely in horror movies (iirc, the movie The Devil's Rejects is dedicated to him). I know him from this movie and from one episode of Malcolm in the Middle, and he was a great comedic actor when he was cast in these roles. Sad we never got more of him as a comedian

Seth Walker

IMO this is Tim's best movie. Ed Wood, Edward Scissor Hands, and Sleepy Hollow are his other really good films but they all are in the Johnny Depp wheel house of Tim Burton and are much more of what you expect from him. Sweeney Todd is OK as well but suffers from weak singing abilities of Depp and Carter even though the Burton style really suits that story. Big Fish is truly the most human story he ever directed which is why I think its the best. And Mars attacks is truly terrible. Might be his worst....

Brandon

It is all about Pfeiffer, who is iconic. Otherwise, DeVito is really off-puttingly gross, and I'm not sure what Walken is really doing there. Definitely worth seeing though, and I'd probably say better than the first, as well as a majority of films in the genre

Brandon

Also, just watch Terms of Endearment it's so fucking great. One of those rare times (as well as Amadeus the next year) when the Academy got it exactly right.

Youtalkingtome

I haven't seen many of his movies (as I said, not a huge fan of what I have seen), but this is my favorite of his now by far.

Youtalkingtome

I'm so sorry! Certainly this feels like it is a deeply personal film for many of us who have lost parents.

Youtalkingtome

I'm sure it's a quality fallow-up. I just had friends as a kid who didn't care for it, so I never bothered.

Youtalkingtome

There are films among his work I definitely need to check out; Ed Wood and Sleepy Hollow are high on my curiosity list.

Youtalkingtome

That's wonderful! I'm genuinely so glad you had a healthy relationship with him. It matters.

Youtalkingtome

It's too bad, because it just feels like Burton leaned so hard into "Tim Burton Style" that his films feel almost like a paint-by-numbers of his own checklist. This film was marvelous, and it didn't force itself to FEEL like a Tim Burton joint.

Youtalkingtome

Of those you listed, Batman is the only one I've seen.

Youtalkingtome

Oh man, he really was a version of Roy in this, wasn't he? I agree, as much as he was a jerk, I can't blame him for being furious when another man basically proposed to his fiance.

Youtalkingtome

Agree 100%. I haven't seen many of his films, but this is by far my instant favorite, and Mars Attacks makes me viscerally angry.

Cosmic Slice

This really was Burton's masterpiece and Ewan sold his character so well. I think the only other movie of his that comes close is Edward Scissorhands.

Brandon

Also I think his uncle was Wedge in Star Wars.

Ashley Thomas

i would definitely consider it, or put it on a poll.

Youtalkingtome

This is by far my favorite Burton. I think I like this way more than 89 Batman

Nihidea

I watched this movie just once, a little over 10 years ago, with my girlfriend at the time. It was one of her favourites. I wasn't in a good headspace back then and one of the reasons I can really tell is that I retained absolutely NOTHING from this film. I know I've seen it. I didn't remember a single thing. Watching this with you was like watching it for the first time again. Hopefully this time it'll stick with me a little more. It is definitely the best Tim Burton I've seen.
