I had this friend back in college that would randomly start going "Candy Cane!" when we were riding in the car and he could do the voice perfectly. Creeped us the hell out. And I always suspected that Leelee Sobieski and Helen Hunt are actually the same person. Would explain why we only ever see one of them anymore. 😜

Ah! So glad you two reacted to this! One of my fave movies. I'm a sucker for these type of horror and thriller movies. I don't feel they are done as well anymore. I want the long tense moments, and I want to want the main characters to live. Sadly, that does not happen much with newer films IMO.

Awesome reaction! There are several endings to this movie. I’ve heard some of them are pretty interesting.

Hope your eyes feel better! Bless your heart for watching this with us while not 100%. We all enjoy how your energies go together.

So true. I think this movie had the appropriate kill count for the story. Such a tense time

I really wanna go check this out. This would be a fun blu ray to pick up for the special features

This movie was released under the title Roadkill in the UK and Australia which I feel did it a disservice and made it sound like empty slasher trash when it's got a lot more going on. My friends and I used to have a lot of horror-centric blockbuster nights in the early 2000s and this made for a really interesting watch back then. I distinctly remember my male friends being quite perturbed by the objectification and humiliation of Lewis and Fuller in the diner scene, when they never batted an eye at even the most contrived and egregious female objectification in the other films we watched. This movie really affected them because it took the classic formula of young female sexuality and exuberance being punished by male rage and violence and flipped it on its male leads. They expected a standard horror where the girl on the poster gets leered at by the lens and made either a damsel or topless casualty for indulging in premarital sex or simply the crime of being female in a horror. Instead they saw male recklessness, immaturity, impulsivity, and callousness punished with voyeuristic terrorisation, sexual exploitation, and a menacing threat of sexually frustrated male rage. It definitely scared them more than any other movie we watched that night. I would like to think they learned a little something about what women and other minorities have to wrestle with when engaging with horror media, but I don't think they were open to that level of introspection just yet. Rather than being intellectually stimulated by the experience I think they wrote off the discomfort they felt as a reaction to the movie being "weird and kinda gay". They really weren't ready to see two guys in the typically female roles of "helpless victim getting scary phone calls" and "naked terrified prey". On top of that, this movie is lit and shot way better than one would expect. It does a lot with a little, and I'd go as far as calling some of the tension crafting sequences great. The score and sound design have some pretty good moments too. This film spawned two direct to dvd sequels I never saw because they seem like they actually are the kind of schlock that this unfortunately got mistaken for. Glad you guys reacted to it and saw its value. I think Steve Zahn was a great casting choice too because he's so effortlessly amusing but he also has strong and underutilised dramatic chops up his sleeve, as you mentioned about his performance in Riding in Cars with Boys. That mix is great for playing a dumb jokester who gets himself into a nightmare situation like this, his terror hits pretty hard when contrasted against his flippant goofiness. I was also a pretty big Leelee Sobieski fan back in the day because of her performance in Never Been Kissed, but she did another thriller called The Glass House the same year as Joy Ride. She stars alongside Stellan Skarsgard and Diane Lane and I remember renting it a few times because it was pretty effectively tense and creepy. And while it isn't the most accurate representation of his career or the biggest role, the Paul Walker movie I most want to recommend is Tammy and the T-Rex (1994). Go in blind. (no pun intended, I hope your eyes feel better soon!)

I always wanted them to star in something together as related characters. I felt both vindicated and appalled when the uncanny resemblance got spoofed on an episode of Celebrity Deathmatch of all things. There's an abysmal quality clip of the claymation carnage on dailymotion if you're interested. The heavily deteriorated video is pretty fitting for how crude and dated the humour is. Today I can appreciate it as a bizarre and niche relic of bygone culture but as a kid the Leelee slander had me fuming haha

John Dahl is a really cool director. I know you've seen some of his later TV work like Hannibal and The Americans, but you should check more of his features, particularly The Last Seduction and Red Rock West.

I nearly skipped over this as I hadn't heard of it. But then I remembered it was called Road Kill in the UK, and I liked it!

jimmy2k4o .

yeah i wonder why they change the name, i think road kill is a better name, but maybe they thought brits are too posh and miserable to know what a "joy ride" is

I love this film, it is such an underrated thrilled. I love the fact that we never really ever see Rusty Nail, we just hear his voice and he is very creepy. It also helps that he's voiced by Buffalo Bill himself. Which he isn't credited for it because he came in so late into production, he only did the voice work. The film is intense, especially the climax. I also really like that this film focuses on the brothers, it's definitely more about them then Lewis and Venna. It actually feels like two films in a way, the first half with just the guys and the second with her. It's just sad that her and her friend got sucked into it. Steve Zahn really is so good in this. Another underrated film of his that I highly recommend is A Perfect Getaway, he's fantastic, please check that one out. And I must credit Paul Walker too, he was also really good in this. And one of his last projects he ever did was a film called Hours, which I would definitely check out too.

I completely agree about Leelee and Helen Hunt, she could literally be her daughter, lol. Not only do they look alike but the sound alike too.

Actuarial Lurker

She was in both Deep Impact and Eyes Wide Shut which is interesting range
