Oh my god! I just finished watching your reaction to "Once", which I'd never seen and loved, and now you drop this to complete my Saturday afternoon! Thank God I have no social life.

Erin Mileur

Since this your second Joe Johnston movie after the Rocketeer fun fact Timothy Dalton is a fan of this movie.

Lol, I feel the same way! It's such a dreary day where I am with so many storms lately. Just a great, cozy film to watch when you don't want to go outside.

I am so excited to watch this reaction. I was just in Coalwood yesterday, helping people get clean water after the mess the coal companies left behind, so this movie has extra special feels for me.

Jeff

It's actually beautiful where I live, but I'd still much rather stay inside with Kevin, Joe, and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Erin Mileur

The book this based on is called Rocket Boys but the studio decided to change the title because they felt that that title wouldn't sell to women so they went with the title October Sky which is actually an anagram of Rocket Boys.

acidnova

I've only watched the start of the video so far but since you were asking about ages and mentioned both Gyllenhaal and Gosling, I just checked and they are only about a month apart from each other. They'll both turn 46 later this year.

acidnova

Kudos to you and the people you're working with in cleaning up the environment and getting clean water to people.

This has been a film I’ve been really looking forward to your reactions. One of my favorites. Love movies based on real life!!

Another movie about West Virginia and coal mining with Chris Cooper to check out is Matewan (1987) directed by John Sayles about the West Virginia Coal Wars.

Jeff

I was just going to recommend the same thing. I can't afford it right now, but I'm hoping someone will purchase it for the guys to react to. It was Chris Cooper's first film.

For many years before COVID, they had a Rocket Boys Festival where Homer and whichever of the others could make it, would have preside over a day of high school kids and locals shooting off rockets they built. It stopped for a few years but started up again last year . Also, there is a " Rocket Boys Drive." So the locals did embrace them.

Nick Stark

I fully agree with your statement Joe. This is definitely a comfort film. I’ve watched this film more times than I can remember in the last 25 years. Never fails to bring tears to my eyes. I’m not even surprised one bit you both loved it as well. Thanks guys.

Once a year in October 4th, it's a Sputnik birthday tradition in our house 😀🚀

Wild! Jake G. has felt like he has been 32 to me for about 20 years now.

Out of Joe Johnston's popcorn blockbusters (Jumanji, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, JP3, Hidalgo, The Rockateer, The Wolfman, and Captain America) The Rockateer is my favorite. October Sky is his best movie in my opinion. It put Jake on the map and solidified Laura Dern as one of my favorite actors. It was also the first time I had ever seen Chris Cooper and he has been a favorite ever since. This movie makes me nostalgic for the past where despite America's many flaws it still had a national desire for scholastic and scientific discovery. Where the achievements of a handful of kids from a coal mining town could capture and inspire the heart of our nation and the media would boost their story. These kind of dreams and achievements still happen today but they never seem to get talked about with the level of awe and pride they deserve because we are inundated by insipid tik tok, A.I., reality show, and political bullshit.

Love this movie, saw it in theaters as a huge space nerd as a kid. I've read a couple of Homer Hickam's books since then. Homer Hickam Jr. is the Homer in the movie, the real guy did write the book it's based on. Good timing too since it was just a couple weeks ago that the University of Waterloo team set a new record for amateur rockets. I suspect The Hunger Games movies took a lot of inspiration from this for the visual language they used for District 12.

Ben Gilbert

Great movie. This is one I've been meaning to watch for a long time.

About 25 years ago, I was at the national booksellers convention in Chicago. Homer was signing one of his books, so I was able to meet him. I couldn’t say much since there was a line, but I did tell him how inspirational I think his story is.

Guy Francisco Polin

That's a great movie written and directed by the great (but sadly forgotten today) John Sayles. The renown American filmmaker who brought us LONE STAR.

Dani

Oh such a good movie. I love this one. It's definitely nostalgic for me to watch it. I remember watching it years ago and I rewatch it every now and then. Fun to watch it with you guys this time!

Youtalkingtome

That's a really good call. It does look very similar

Youtalkingtome

You're totally right. These are amazing accomplishments and they should be talked about more. Also Johnston seems like he was a really reliable director, I wonder why he isn't making movies anymore

Ben Gilbert

There’s a lot of similarities in the father-son relationship in this and Billy Elliot.

She's only 59....I was shocked that I.m actually slightly older than she is

Vala- God Bless! Especially when there are companies trying to buy up water resources around the world so that they can sell it to the poor....

I tried building a small one as a kid but then learned how difficult it was to get permission to launch within the NYC limits given the airspace restrictions even back in the late 1970s...so never did...great film.
