I know I'm the one who requested it but I'm still so excited to see you watch it. I'll say more once I've watched it with you

Jonathan

I had some familiarity with the Broadway version from the Tonys but never knew the original film had this much music. A fun first time watch.

Jonathan

Total budget for this was 150k. It made 23 million.

Aaron

There’s a song on the album that isn’t featured on the movie called “Leave”, they do play a short clip of it during the scene when he asks her to sleep over but you have to listen to the song, it’s made me sob many times. His voice is very raw in it.

Thanks so much for requesting this. I can't believe it's been 20 years. This really takes me back to a time a place.

Glad to see your reaction to this lovely film! I visited Ireland in 2015 and ended up seeing the live musical in Dublin there. I'd already seen the movie shortly after it came out and listened to the soundtrack many times by that point. It was a lovely experience to get to see the show in Dublin. They practically advertised it the moment I landed there so it clearly was a draw for tourists in Ireland at that time. There's always something strange when you watch a movie soon after someone in it dies and there are new connections to be made that affect how you see the film. I have to admit that the scenes involving the motorcycle was hard to watch now because Hansard died in a motorcycle crash.

A simpler, better version of Carney's follow-up companion piece, Begin Again, though i do love Knightly and Ruffalo in it.

Here's Glen Hansard performing Falling Slowly with Eddie Vedder in concert. it seems they performed it together multiple times at different shows since there are multiple videos up on youtube. This one had a fun little story before the performance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2H0opR53xlc

I love that movie!

right sorry for what's gonna be a wall of text, I've made notes throughout watching and this'll be a big splurge. First off, glad yous enjoyed it! I was first introduced to this film through the one song, Falling Slowly same as you, my mam had it on CD growing up and it weren't till much later that I watched the film, but god I'm glad I did! John Carney the director/writer also did Sing Street, which I remember yous also being big fans of. I think I had said it was semi biopic and that might even be exaggerated, it is definitely more fact than fiction. Both leads are musicians and afaik they never acted in anything else. By the time this film was made Glen Hansard (male lead) was a very successful artist in the Irish music scene, having been the frontman of the Frames for over a decade but Marketa Irglova (female lead) was just emerging. They started dating during production of the film and released several albums under the name The Swell Season. Glen Hansard played with that fucked up holey guitar from 1990 and I think right up to his death. Final tidbit, about the scene where they are playing music for dinner and there's a whole roster of singers/performers. Glen performs with another man, Fergus O'Farrell, who was the lead singer/songwriter of Interference at the time. He unfortunately died very young due to muscular dystrophy, spending the last years of his life in a wheelchair. The song they sing is called Gold and it's one of my all time favourites.

John Carney directed this, same guy who did Sing Street and recently did another music-related movie called Power Ballad with Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas

Adam Grant

It's crazy to me how well this movie works with no budget, a very simple plot and characters, and a lot of downtime of music just playing. On paper it sounds like it would be boring but the music is so good, the actors are so charismatic, and the emotions are so nuanced it ends up gripping.

Adam Grant

Also some background, the two leads (Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova) started dating irl during this movie and eventually started a band together called The Swell Season, although both the relationship and band ended up splitting up. By today's standards their relationship is a little uncomfy because he met her (through her dad who ran a music festival that hired him) when she was 13 and he was 31. She turned 18 just after the movie finished filming. So the jury is out on whether he was a good person but he sure as hell was talented.

Todd

WHAT?!?! NO ONE watches this movie. I am so excited.

Lola Lirola

That is way worse than "a little uncomfy", and unfortunately Hansard has (had) a reputation for this kind of predatory behaviour. When he died recently, a lot of stories came out. This wasn't just a true romance that happened despite her age, it was his pattern. And they split when she finally grew up. The jury, regrettably, is very much in on that one. I think the movie is lovely, but I don't think we need to pretend Hansard was clean.

Brandon

Hansard was also in Alan Parkers The Commitments in '91, clearly one of John Carney's favorite movies (Sing Street is almost a remake.) Highly recommended film.

Alka

This is one of the films that will always have a special place in my heart. So much can be done with just a good, straightforward story and pure passion. Sometimes those are really all you need to get through an audience. This feels like a snapshot of normal people's lives (of course it is still fictional) and how fantastic it is to just see it up close and personal. There's warmth to it that can't be faked.

Youtalkingtome

I love Sing Street! I saw the trailer for Power Ballad. I had no idea he made both those movies. I have to watch this new one

Youtalkingtome

Incredible. I love Eddie Vedder. They mesh well together
