Buffy is apparently a big fan of royalty free music

I just love the way info is given out in dribs ad drabs this season. Master class writing.

What a lot of people dont see, ... = the first insane guy was made by Glory. We saw her put her fingers in his head. maybe, the reason why the asylum is full is because of Glory. maybe, this is what Ben is saying (all the reactors never see this, so I guess the clue is not clear enough and people are too distracted by the main story of the episode) (sorry for my english)

Stephanie P.

Season five is really good. Even the filler episodes are good. Not that I would call this technically a filler because plot points are happening in it, but it’s just a little different and not a typical one introducing aliens and basically just alt plot lines. It’s hard to skip an episode this season in a rewatch because you will always miss something, even a small thing that comes to play later on. I watched a behind the scenes feature of this episode, and the guy they got to play the “killer snot monster” as Xander called it did a great job wiggling around like that. lol

Stephanie P.

Edit: I meant woman who they got to play the monster, my mistake. I think it may have even been two different women. I know they had some kind of impressive puppet going in some of the scenes too, but it’s held up really well in terms of the affect and how old the episode is.

Some episodes you need the cat extra close for fear snuggles.

I love the reveal about Ben. It really took me by surprise when I first saw the episode.

"Join the fire department!" I love that - as I've said before, I dislike that the Initiative is back this season after it was so explicitly shut down and disbanded ("salt the earth") at the end of the last season, even if it's in some new roving form. It would have been cool to see Riley go into some normal real-world, first-responder kind of job instead of having to stick with the supernatural.

- You can keep your Gentlemen, you can keep Der Kinderstadt, the queller demon is THE scariest, creepiest, skin-crawlingest monster on this entire show for me. I can't even look at the screen. GNYAH! (Passion of the Nerd calls it Ceiling Turd.) - Also, all the scenes with the meteor remind me of the Stephen King segment of Creepshow. - The guy the Scoobies find was the security guard whose brain Glory, err, fingered in her first appearance, and presumably a few of those people in the psych ward had the same thing done to them. Ben summons the demon to get rid of them, but it just targets anyone whose brain is wonky, which currently includes Joyce, as well as anyone who was in the psych ward for normal reasons. - I'm glad you brought up the Riley and Sandy scene before this, because I think the thing with the vampire crack den clarifies that a bit. It was the perfect first step to what we see of him in this episode -- he's chasing a thrill in letting her bite him before taking the moral satisfaction of staking her. He seems to be over the moral satisfaction part at this point. - Spike knew how much it would sting Riley to know he missed out on something happening with Buffy. That comment was not casual.

Episode 87. Interesting how nonchalantly they handled delving into aliens. Usually supernatural shows disregard aliens and sci fi shows try to find a sci fi explanation for apparent magic. Riley is back in his element. You’re right he serves one story purpose, Buffy’s boyfriend but last season he was also a military demon fighter. This episode let him be both again, and his character benefited from that. The queller was always scary to me because of the concept of there being a threat in the room and despite what you say nobody comes to help. Then the method itself of vomiting a fast drying substance that seems designed to suffocate the victim. Also the slow burn of Ben, they showed him just enough to make him a presence but not enough to be mysterious that only now you were beginning to wonder this scene, what role he has then they reveal he summoned the queller, “because he’s cleaning up glory’s mess like I’ve done my whole life”. It’s an answer that raises so many questions about Ben, his morality and his relationship with glory.

ScarlettMi

I didn’t think this was a reveal that Ben was necessarily evil. He seemed frustrated by the need to clean up after Glory. Although perhaps, as a doctor, if he wanted to mercy-kill all of Glory’s brain-sucked victims he could have just slipped something in their IVs instead of summoning an alien that doesn’t care what kind of crazy person it kills. Okay… maybe this was kind of a reveal that he’s evil-ish. LOL

Ben is the worst doctor! You don’t go around quelling your patients!

Miah

That's why I'm always surprised when I watch "Something Blue" and hear Blink 182 at the Bronze.

Erica

Lol i know what this says without having to translate it 😂

vala p

Or, evil's just as damaging cousin, profoundly stupid.

dys

I remember seeing an ad for the show before I'd ever watched it that showed the scene with the demon in Joyce's bedroom and as a 13-year-old thinking "nope, this is too scary for me". You guys were just talking about those first few Angel episodes having a higher dose of creature horror than usual for Buffy, but man this is one of the exceptions. We do keep seeing a pattern of people who are mentally off seeing through the magic around Dawn somehow, but I don't think we're meant to think they're right when they say she's nothing. It's already been established that even though she was constructed she's a real person *now*, with all the internal life of any other person. Offhand comment from Willow, but while the idea that some of the stars we see in the sky could already be dead because of the time it takes their light to reach us is a neat one, it's really unlikely to be true. The farthest individual stars we can see with the naked eye are only a few thousand light-years away, and even the shortest-lived stars last millions of years, so it's very unlikely even one star we can see has died in the last few thousand years at most. Also she got the year of the Tunguska event wrong. (end space nerd soapbox) [rot13 for spoilers] ubb obl, Gur Obql vf tbvat gb or ebhtu sbe gurz. I was under the impression that the group graham is working with isn't the initiative. More like paramilitary monster hunter group

acidnova

Just a correction: It's Kindestod, not Kinderstadt. Stadt means city, so that would be something like Child City. Tod means death, so the Kindestod means Child Death.

acidnova

This is the most X-Files episode of Buffy. The creature design is very reminiscent of some of the monsters they had on that show. Plus having the initiative guys helps give it some of the X-Files flavor. I think you're the first reactors I've seen actually retch at the sight of the Queller spewing at its victim though everyone I've seen does get visibly grossed out.

I🖤Kraken

Yeah, I definitely had my hands over my eyes but even the sound of it was so skin crawlingly disgusting. Definitely the worst villain in my opinion.

acidnova

This is one of the episodes I have been dreading watching simply because my mom has been dealing with several health issues, including cancer for awhile now and I've become her caregiver. She's currently in remission but still has other stuff going on. Literally, earlier today she had to have a PET scan to check her cancer status. Thankfully, there has been no brain stuff so I haven't had to listen to my mom say strange things but Buffy crying alone while doing the dishes is unfortunately a very relatable feeling. I know that a lot of other patrons are middle aged or older so I'm sure some of you have been there, too. Anyway, just want to send out my love to anyone who has had to be in a caregiver role for a sick and/or elderly loved one. It's hard.

Erica

-as someone who lived in a lot of roach-infested apartments in my late teens/early 20s, and now has panic attacks when i see most bugs, this episode makes me nauseous and anxious 🤢 i dont skip episodes when i rewatch, but i always consider skipping this one -is this episode suggesting that there's some kind of connection between ben and glory? Weird. -something i never picked up on in previous viewings is that riley says that joyce was discharged, and he knows this because ben told him. I can see how he's frustrated, finding things out secondhand, but between this being 2001 (meaning idek if buffy HAS a cell phone) and everything about her life, he should be a little more forgiving -not sure if you clocked it, but the mam who was killed by the queller demon in the field where it landed was the maintenance man who was attacked by glory in her first appearance, when she did the thing where she stuck her fingers in his head -i was looking at the episodes to come for the rest of this season, and holy hell is it great. There's one or 2 that aren't directly related to the main story arc, but they're still fun episodes. -"i don't want to cry today" lmaoooo good fuckin luck guys 😂

Carl Wilson

Obviously it's not the Initiative in its previous form, with the lab and Maggie's experiments. I'd just taken it as the show saying that dealing with demons is the Slayer's realm, not the government or military's. But it's a minor complaint, not a major one.

Carl Wilson

*Yes, it's very X-Files, from the meteor crash onwards.

dys

We definitely just don't know what Ben's deal is at this point beyond knowing that he's not *just* a doctor.

dys

I didn't at all remember this when I've watched before, but there was a lot of suggestion in season 4 that the Initiative was an officially sanctioned project of the US military and the ranks Riley and pals had were ranks they literally held in the US army. Professor Walsh went off the rails but it seems like the whole US military paranormal program went way beyond just the one base under the college campus.

dys

I can relate to this so much, I'm really hoping for the best for you and your mom. My dad did die from a brain tumor earlier this year, and I was a caregiver for him in the last months of his life, he never said mean things like Joyce did this episode but he did progressively forget so much over the last year of his life, in his last few weeks he didn't know who any of us were. I guess I am approaching middle age too (turning 40 soon), and I feel really sorry for my mom who had to be a caregiver for her mom who died of cancer about 25 years ago (and did turn a little bit mean because of the pain she was in) and then my dad.

I🖤Kraken

All the best wishes to you and your family. It is a marathon and not a sprint so remember to take care of yourself too. Funny story to make you smile: my mom was in the hospital, hopped up on meds that did make her hallucinate and just before she fell asleep, she suddenly leans over, grabs my arm and says that we come from a long line of demon slayers and when she died it would pass on to me. I was like, "Thanks Mom... Go to sleep, crazy lady." She snuggled into her blankets all happy and proud of herself for passing on the torch. 😂

Carl Wilson

It was *definitely an official military project. But there is a scene at the end of the second-last ep of S4 that's a meeting in Washington where the order seems to be to "shut it all down." I took that as going beyond Walsh's end of it, but either I was wrong or the show decided to walk that back somewhat.

Gail Hislop

I always thought it was absurd that Joyce's brain tumour surgery was being put off for days!!! What kind of Dr does that. Any medical show I've ever watched gets surgery almost immediately once diagnosed with a brain tumour. Sunnydale has the worst hospital! As others have pointed out too, Glory has been sucking energy/life out of people's brains making them go insane since she arrived. Also Michelle was a legend at screaming as Dawn, she has to do it in lots of episodes and she was so good.

Youtalkingtome

Right? I'm very curious to see where they take him next

Youtalkingtome

I didn't even recognize him! That's great continuity

Lola Lirola

Oooh!! I've seen the show a couple of times and I never made the connection!! 🤦‍♀️ Thanks for pointing it out, it makes it better

Lola Lirola

Ah, friend, much strength to you!! To be honest, I have found it comforting too that a lot of people here seem to be around my age. We go through these things together. You're doing good, and taking care of loved ones is the most noble thing there is. I hope your mom does really well. I hope this is a place of respite and support. I know I always smile when I see your comments!

Tina

To be honest, I think three days is quick from scan to surgery, I can't tell if you are being sarcastic and I just don't get it. There aren't that many neurosurgeons, they need to have an OR and specialist nurses available, they need to plan the surgery from approach to closing - three days seems fast, actually, considering.

I was as confused as Buffy when Joyce mentioned that the push buttons at the crosswalk don't do anything, so I looked it up. It seems to be at least partially true, there are actually a lot of them out there that dont't do anything, having been replaced by more modern systems, but they're left in pace anyways because it would be too expensive to remove them and it gives pedestrians a sense of agency. There were other reason as well, some only work during certain times of day.
