I have a core memory about this franchise . When it came out my grandfather was near the end of his life and was rarely lucid but the commercial for the sequel stuck in his head and he wanted to see it in theaters so we took him to see it, even though I wasn’t feeling well (I had the flu and didn’t know it) one the way home the radio was reporting on the massive blizzard about to hit us so we stopped at blockbuster and rented the first movie since none of if had seen it and I spent the next two weeks watching it on repeat while horribly sick and snowed in with one of the worst blizzards of my lifetime. At the time I was miserable but now it’s a cherished memory

Burgess Meredith appeared a total of 20 times as the Penguin on the Adam West Batman. They actually always had a script ready for when he was available and wanted to do an episode.

This movie is a Thanksgiving holiday tradition in my family - along with Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Loved you reaction! I hope you watch Grumpier Old Men - it is one of the better sequels. And please watch The Odd Couple -- it is a wonderful treat. I also suggest The Fortune Cookie from 1966 -- which also pairs Matthau and Lemmon -- and scored Matthau an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

2026-09-25 21:00 A really fun movie. Matthau won Best Supporting Actor for The Fortune Cookie, his first movie with Jack Lemmon. They made 10 movie together. Lemon also directed Matthau in Kotch in 1971. I've liked most of their movies I've seen except for The Front Page, Billy Wilder's remake of His Girl Friday. One of their overlooked movies is The Grass Harp, a small-scale adaptation of a Truman Capote story.

This movie gave both of their careers a spark. The sequel to this was good. They also did a sequel to The Odd Couple. Kevin is right Out to Sea was terrible. Jack Lemon did another “Grumpy” movie with James Garner called My Fellow Americans which is grumpy old men but with George HW Bush and Bill Clinton.

Bye Bye Birdie is a great musical but I have issues with the Ann Margaret movie because they changed a character to white and removed all the race relations plot from the play. I prefer the 90s remake with Jason Alexander due to that.

Ice fishing rods are short because you don't cast with them.

This reminds me how much I loved going to the theater not knowing what I was going to watch and finding movies like this. Grumpier old men is also worth the watch.

In 1993, Matthau was 72, Lemmon was 68, and Ann Margaret was only 52,,, Ann Margaret is still alive at age 85

The movie I saw the day of the blizzard was the sequel in January of 96 for that blizzard. I wish I was seeing a movie the day of the 1993 storm I was stuck in a mountain cabin with no plumbing, a wood stove for heat and cooking and a gas powered generator for light.

The director of this movie, Donald Petrie, is an acquaintance of mine. He loves to tell stories about the shoot, I think it's his favorite thing he ever did. The best one is that apparently when they offered the part to Matthau, he said, "Well, it's ok, I'll do it, but I have a condition. Don't you pair me with that son of a bitch Lemmon again. I've been carrying him for too many decades." So they started shopping the Lemmon role around to other actors, but before they could find one, Matthau had to drop out because he had another project. So Petrie thinks great, now we can go to Lemmon. So they offer the part to Lemmon, and Lemmon says, "It's a great script, I'll do it, but don't you put me with that damn Matthau again. It's been thirty years, I'm sick of him." They agree and Lemmon signs on, but they can't find the right actor for the Matthau role. Finally, Matthau becomes available again and the studio intervenes and convinces Petrie, Lemmon, and Matthau to all sit down and try to work something out. Both Lemmon and Matthau are swearing up and down there's no chance they'll work with each other, Petrie thinks the project is cooked. But then they sit down to lunch, and they eat, the ice breaks a little, they have a few drinks, they reminisce, they don't talk about the movie. Finally the check comes, Petrie pays it. Lemmon looks at Matthau from across the table and Matthau looks at Lemmon. "One more time?" Lemmon asks. "Just one. For you." Matthau says. They made three more movies together.

Thank you so much for watching! I’m so glad you liked it! You’re absolutely right - this is the perfect matinee movie. Especially during a snow storm. Lemmon and Matthau are always wonderful, but Burgess Meredith always steals the show for me. He’s clearly having the time of his life :)

Sounds like Walter White after the vacuum treatment

The Fortune Cookie is definitely high on my list simply by virtue of being a Billy Wilder film.

Youtalkingtome

Thanks! Good to know that before watching it. I wasn't aware of the controversy.

Youtalkingtome

Oh, of course. That makes sense. All of my fishing experiences are of the casting variety (bass, crappie, etc).

Youtalkingtome

Thank you for this! Burgess Meredith was having a blast making this movie. Plus, we get the bonus of "Oh, Christopher McDonald has always been good at playing a real douche."

Youtalkingtome

What a wild story! Thank you for sharing that. I had just assumed they put the project together specifically for them.

Youtalkingtome

I did that as well when I was younger. I had a weird experience seeing a matinee of The Ring in a giant cry room on opening day (it was like 10AM) and being the only one in the theater, not knowing what the film was about going in. It was SUPER creepy.

a classic! this is a great movie. and yes ann margaret is still alive. she was only in her early 50s in this. lemmon was in his mid 60s and matthau was in his 70s. burgess meredith lived until 97. his last movie was grumpier old men. this is a fun one. im surprised neither of you had seen it. it feels like one of those that was always on tv.

Ashley Thomas

this would be a good one in the thanksgiving rotation. planes trains and automobiles is in mine and home for the holidays (sounds like a xmas movie but its a thanksgiving movie)

Ashley Thomas

you meantioned alan arkin, have you seen little miss sunshine? if not i think youd absolutely love it.

Youtalkingtome

Never came across this one! So glad we got to check this out

Youtalkingtome

We did it a couple years ago! Our reaction should be on here :)

Ashley Thomas

Yes The Odd Couple was a movie and a tv show that was a huge hit for 5 seasons, starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman. Cactus Flower with Walter Matthau, Goldie Hawn and Ingrid Bergman is a fun screwball comedy. The Apartment with Jack Lemmon and Shirley McLaine is a gem.
