Linda doesn't suck. Nadine was an impressionable 17-year-old girl who was told by Roy that Linda left -- even with a "replacement" wife, Roy would have kept searching for her (that's what he did when Dorothy left). That he never searched for Linda suggests a darker fate for her. Everything in Dorothy's timeline from the first to the last time we see the pancakes is her dream, including the postcard. Obviously though whatever danger Dorothy is in now I would 100x rather be in her shoes than Gator's...

But why would Linda take a teenage runaway home to a household with a violent, abusive husband and father? Has the abuse become so normalised that she thinks she is providing a good home for this girl? Does she think this is better and safer than her being on the street?

Desperate people do desperate things. Linda might have thought it was better for the homeless girl at first, just out of a sentimental desire to give her shelter, and only later have realized it was a ticket out. I'm happy to imagine there's a 50-50 chance the postcard was real.
