When director Charles Laughton approached Robert Mitchum he described the character as a diabolical shit to which Mitchum replied “Present”.

acidnova

HOLY CRAP! Did not expect this! So when I first joined your patreon, I'd messaged you guys to asked if you'd seen this movie and got the reply that one of you had but the other hadn't so I decided to go with a different movie since I prefer first time reactions. But I'm so thrilled that you pulled this one out for Insomnia Cinema! Can't wait to watch your reaction!

Erin Mileur

The love/hate on Robert Mitchums knuckles in referenced/homaged in Do The Right Thing when Radio Raheem (Bill Nunn) has brass knuckles with love/hate.

Erin Mileur

This was Charles Laughton’s only film he directed due to the negative reviews and it failing at the box office.

acidnova

It was so ahead of its time! So many incredible moments that blend beauty and horror. I still think about the shot of the mother in the lake and the duet at the end. Utterly sublime.

An utter classic, with Charles Laughton up there with Jean Renoir in doing things with a camera that it took the rest of the industry decades to catch up to. It's such a tremendous loss that it bombed so hard that he never got to direct again.

Chemical Em

another great classic thriller is 'the naked kiss' 1964

In̈ The Rocky Horror Picture Show Eddie has the same tattoos .

4 pets? Is there one we’ve never seen? Is it a second cat?

Ben Gilbert

Lillian Gish's career lasted 75 years, from silent films to 1987's The Whales of August with Bette Davis.

Youtalkingtome

Second cat. She comes down, but only when Joe isn't here. She's scared of anyone but me and a few others. I think she was abused before I adopted her.

Youtalkingtome

I just saw that she was in Birth of a Nation. What an amazing career.

Suzanne Whyte

Aw, poor thing. Which one isn’t afraid of storms?

Youtalkingtome

Ironically, the one who is scared of people is cool with storms.

Pam Nail

I try to have empathy for characters that aren't explicitly villains, but Ruby tests me. "I love him!" Girl, you spent five minutes with him and he didn't do squat except not catcall you. The townspeople are so infuriating (by design, obviously). There might be more skepticism of someone like Powell nowadays but there would still be plenty of people who fall for him hook line and sinker. And probably even excuse his crimes once they find out the truth (as we've seen so many times with That Guy). I do love this movie, though. And you can see its influence in so many modern filmmakers. It's a shame Laughton never made another film again. This is spectacular.

This is one of my favorite movies. It's a tough movie to describe to people who haven't seen it, because it is a thriller about serial killer chasing children over stolen money, but it's also a fable about a mythic battle between competing visions of Christianity. Also the best use of light and shadow in film.

Erin Mileur

Charles Laughton was married to Elsa Lanchester best known for portraying the Bride of Frankenstein .

Clare Manion

Excellent choice! I’ve been meaning to see this one for such a long time as well. Totally agreed - it’s brilliant! But yes, probably a little ahead of its time. The high contrast black-and-white photography used with such gorgeous, symbol-rich cinematography was jaw-dropping. I can certainly see why it’s now considered such a classic. Plus the diegetic hymns… That scene about halfway through where the kids are hiding in the barn and we see the silhouette of the preacher on the horse, singing in the distance — that’s one of the most chilling things I’ve seen in a movie for quite a while. Just phenomenal.

Ben, this is so off topic but I had no idea that there were any languages that used an umlaut over the letter n until I saw this comment. I had to google and found a few. My keyboard doesn't even offer that as an option, only ñ or ń.

Ben Gilbert

It's the keyboard on my Samsung tablet. If you slide your finger a little bit, in a certain way, instead of just tapping straight down you get the accented characters, I wasn't wearing my glasses, so I didn't notice it.

If anyone ever finds themselves in Moundsville, WV you can still visit the prison in this movie, as a tourist but it was still was in operation until the 90s. Also this is based on a novel that was inspired by a true story, isn't that a scary thought.

Youtalkingtome

Agreed. This is a masterpiece from the lighting of the film alone.

Youtalkingtome

The light and shadow contrast was so strong that some of the images looked like backlit stage flats. So, the preacher riding in on the wide shot you mentioned in silhouette was incredibly creepy!

Youtalkingtome

I don't know if I've ever seen her work, but she looked like such a lovely, warm person (when not in her Bride makeup)!

Youtalkingtome

You are absolutely correct. We live in a world where people would defend this guy to their last breath. And Ruby should never be allowed to date. Ever.

Erin Mileur

She played Charles Laughton nurse in Witness for the Prosecution I just realized you had done a reaction of that movie.

Toc

That has one of the best beginnings of any movie, ever! That's how you start a movie!

Toc

Wow!!!! Very cool!!!! Viva Insomnia Cinema! (you DO sleep, sometimes, right? :D )

stingo

straight-up a top 5 horror movie. Mitchum gives one of the most terrifying villain performances ever the real secret sauce though is the kids. Joe and Pearl MAKE this movie, and it wouldn't be anywhere near as good without them also, cinematography and editing 😍

Biff McKeldin

An absolutely gorgeous background score, on top of all the other superlatives this movie deserves. It makes me sad that Laughton was so disheartened by the movie's reception, he never directed another.
