Seriously. I don't even think in casual suggestions. Are they bad? Are they cancelled? What gives?

Great picks! Some truly great gems on there that I can't believe nobody (including me) has recommended before either. This is the moment to bring up a controversial suggestion: How about a once-a-month (or however frequent you want) "our pick" slot, where you simply choose something you've been wanting to watch and nobody is buying or suggesting? That way you can also react to more recent or timely picks to boost the YouTube algo if everyone is reacting to something the same week, like it happened with Obsession. And you can also get to some of those "I've been dying to watch" things that we haven't been thinking about, like these!

Roland

F1 looks like it should suck, but it definitely doesn't. Sure, it's a pretty tropey sports movie, but the action scenes and cinematography elevate it. Watch it with the best screen and audio that you can.

Allison O

I feel like this particular community has not gone hard on kids’ movies! Other than the animated ones. But Matilda is great.

Roland

Strangers On A Train is the under-rated prequel to Throw Momma From The Train, correct? 😘

Matilda is a treasure! You’ll love it ❤️

Courtney

Love this idea!

Lola Lirola

Absolutely correct. Not many people know this.

Courtney

I hadn’t seen Best Little Whorehouse until AMC replayed it after Dolly’s passing, and couldn’t believe how much fun it is. If it doesn’t win the poll, I’m buying it. I just decided.

John

The director of Ghost Dog also did a film called Dead Man. If you haven't seen Dead Man, I highly recommend it.

san

Yeah, a dictator slot is always fun!

DelGuy03

Highest possible recommendation for Strangers on a Train. For me, it's both my favorite and the best Hitchcock (and that's against heavy competition, of course). It has both vivid characters (and the acting to bring them to life) and some classic Hitchcock-style set-piece sequences. I'm a little surprised that it doesn't come up in recommendations -- I thought it was pretty widely admired. I always included Dreamgirls (even before there was a movie) in the History of Musicals class I taught. Onstage, it's nearly constant singing -- essentially a Motown opera. As so often happens when such works are filmed (Rent is an obvious example), nearly all the in-between singing was turned into spoken dialogue, which I think is a shame. But it's still a striking movie with some interesting casting.

I doubt it will get picked since it probably flew under the radar for a lot of folks, but For the Boys is not only a really good flick, it has a great soundtrack that you should go listen to, even if you never watch the movie. Bette’s got chops. Mellisa Manchester and her chops are in the movie too. And since the movie spans fifty-some years, set against the backdrop of the USO in WW2, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, the songs also span a plethora of genres. It’s a soundtrack I still have in my CD collection, and Bette’s covers of Stuff Like That There and In My Life have lived rent-free in my head for 35 years.💙

Just Lily

I definitely asked for Strangers on a Train 🙂 this one and Shadow of a Doubt and The Lady Vanishes

Just Lily

If you want to watch a Formula 1 movie, Rush (2013) is way better. F1 just has a recency bias

Lola Lirola

😂 that's a good name for it!

Jamie Morgan

I WAS LITERALLY SAVING UP MONEY TO BUY MATILDA!!! (I am still going to buy a movie from you guys, I want to support you and I have a couple of others in mind.)

Kristi Govertsen

It’s awesome! Those songs get stuck in your head for days.🤣

Claire Eyles

Strangers on a Train is a fantastic movie. You should watch some silent films as well, more people need to watch silent films.

Cosmic Slice

100% For the Boys and Best Little whorehouse.... fantastic movies with great music

Cosmic Slice

That and for the boys would make a great double feature

Jeremy Burch

All these movies are great, I really liked 13 going on 30, also I used to watch Matilda over and over when I was younger, I also loved Matilda the Musical.

Roland

Why this popped up as a duplicate, I have no idea, I only posted it once lol.

cruzinbosco

I think a lot of us likely just assumed you had seen some of these. We forget to ask. 😂 Would love to see Matilda (1st choice) or 13 Going on 30. I'm a millennial.

Daniel Bickermann

Yeah, some of those are pretty obscure, even for an old cineast like me, some were forgotten, and some were admittedly a bit forgettable. I have a hard time recommending most of these, but Matilda IS a kid's classic and Ghost Dog is... really interesting. One of Jim Jarmush's hidden gems, and even for his cult Œuvre this is kind of an outlier. Like the best cult movis it feels like a completely lost branch of cinema, like a really interesting attempt to discover something genuinely original. There certainly is no other movie like it, it is a really unique mixture with Italian mobsters, French ice cream vendors and a Black samurai-hiphop-assasin... it has a career performance by Forest Whitaker and an absolute killer soundtrack by the RZA, and I know you guys like the idiosyncratic movies, so... it's a pity it has so few votes.

(1) Skip House Boat. I liked the idea, but I thought child actor Paul Peterson outshined both Cary Grant and Sophia Loren. (Adults didn’t feel like they had good chemistry.) If Jonesing for Cary, try Operation Petticoat (1959), or I was a Male War Bride (1949), or She Done Him Wrong (1933, with Mae West), or His Girl Friday (1940, yeah it’s good, and already on your personal list). (2) Yes, Strangers on a Train is Hitchcock, but I prefer Spellbound (1945), or Shadow of a Doubt (1943), or Foreign Correspondent (1940) or The Lady Vanishes (1938, a personal favorite) or The 39 Steps (1935). (3) Matilda is a kids’ classic? Try Heidi (1937) or Wee Willie Winkie (1937) or The Little Princess(1939). Never saw Matilde (and don’t want to). Child actress Mara Wilson must remind me of someone I disliked or distrusted as as child, because the thought of having to watch her makes me cringe like hearing nails on a blackboard. Or maybe I didn’t like her appearance in the needless 1954 remake of Miracle on 34th Street, which isn’t her fault at all. (4) As for the rest of the listed films, either didn’t even hear of them or didn’t find the basic story idea appealing. (5) Tower Heist? That to you is a noteworthy movie title? Seems pretty pedestrian and one-note to me. Signs, now THAT’S one of the best movie titles of all time, one word with two meanings which one can’t get until the end of the film.

Brian Harris

For the Boys is BAD bad. Do not recommend.

Michelle Taylor

Hey, I was just wondering—why haven't you ever done any polls for Tim Curry and Dolly Parton?

Heather

I haven’t watched that one in a minute, but I remember liking it. Maybe that was just because I listened to the soundtrack all the time!

Ben Gilbert

Texas has a whorehouse in it!😮

Paul Komoroski

Fun Fact that I just learned: The screenplay Matilda adaptation was written by Zoe Kazan's parents! LOVE Zoe Kazan!

Sherri Makes Stuff

Every time a politician opens their mouth I hear in my head, "Ooooo! I love to dance a little sidestep!"

Ben Gilbert

Bette and Caan did not get along. He famously called her as dumb as a dog. Later he apologized— to his dog.

Kristi Govertsen

And The Girl on the Train makes this one of the most well-rounded, but oft overlooked, trilogies in film history, amiright?😉

GDF

13 Going On 30 is my comfort film. Come second before, maybe it will squeeze past Matilda or maybe it will come second again lol.

Rob Bob

I wholeheartedly agree! Gents, pick something you guys wanna watch every now and then, absolutely. 🎥 🍿

dragonflyingash

Matilda is great, loved the book and this adaptation. Dreamgirls, while different slightly from musical version is also pretty amazing--very stacked cast and some great music. I think I may be more nostalgic for 13 going on 30 than I actually liked it.. .it's funny because the concept has been done so many times, but this version is probably the most charming.

Andy Schreiber

Strangers On A Train is one of Hitchcock's best, with a sensational performance by Robert Walker, and a small role played by Marion Lorne, whom you may remember as Aunt Clara from Bewitched. It's a totally gripping film, with a few really memorable set pieces.

Actuarial Lurker

Strangers on a Train- never saw it but want to based on word of mouth...in fact, I haven't seen ANY of these films....

Hu Main

Always gotta go with Hitchcock, though not his best, Strangers on a Train definitely has some of the most iconographic scenes of his films. I can get behind that. Nothing against anyone who loves any of the others, just not my cup of tea. Maybe Matilda just cause of the cast and I don't really know it. I love Cary Grant but he feels unnatural when trying to act a traditional husband role (eg Houseboat). Can't wait for His Girl Friday. Might spring for Once Upon a Time (1944), his quirkiest role (inspiration for the WB cartoon frog, "Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gaaaaaal...")

Hu Main

I agrree with you 80% (well 4 out of 5 points), but Tower Heist? IDK, sounds to me like a killer episode of Brooklyn Nine Nine...

acidnova

On the plus side, somebody purchased Steel Magnolias already so there's that.

John Marnell

Matilda and the musical adaptation are both worthy additions to the library!

Yankee Veg

Mathilda the Musical, maybe?

Jamie Morgan

Maybe if they did a proshot of the stageshow, I wasn't a big fan of the movie.

Lola Lirola

I saw the musical live and it is *delightful*. The songs are incredible. I hope there's a pro shoot!! 🤞🤞

Ciarán Carr

Ghost Dog fucks so hard, simply one of the coolest films ever made. the feeling that seeps into your bones watching it is unreal

David G

Operation Petticoat (1959) is one of my favorites of his with Tony Curtis.

vala p

great, so we can discuss cuppa cupaa cuppa cake in the comments because I have opinions 🤣

vala p

I think The Towering Inferno slightly edged out Tower Heist for both title and concept, but when I was a kid it seemed liked it was on TV every Saturday night so I am biased

Ben Gilbert

Also, Granger's wife is played by Kasey Rogers who was Louise Tate, Darren's boss' wife on Bewitched.

Andy Schreiber

YES! I forgot about that! It's a Bewitchedapalooza!

Kt B

13 going on 30 feels like it was made for the tween audience. I get that people love it for nostalgia, but having seen it as an adult, it does not hold up well, IMO. Sure, it’s charming in places, but you’ve got to get past the fact that the protagonist is navigating the adult world with middle school sensibilities; it’s more shallow than incisive.

Jontor11

F1 is not worth it imo. Great effects, abysmal story and acting/directing. The worst movie I've seen in decades... But it still has a 7.6 rating on imDb, so to each his own I guess.

Erica

Matilda and 13 going on 30 are incredible comfort movies for me. Matilda in particular has a moment in the beginning that makes me cry like crazy. Ive considered buying Throw Mama From the Train, but maybe if you do strangers on a train you can do a double feature 😊

CB

Dream Girls, Matilda, and Strangers on a Train are all great, watch them all!!! But watch Dream Girls for Eddie Murphy alone! He should have won the Oscar for this one!
