ah, the cinema of gen x childhood trauma. imagine watching this at age 6. it was terrifying and creeptastic.

ScarlettMi

I loved this movie. I'm so glad there was so much creepy fantasy entertainment when I was a kid.

I'm slightly younger than Gen X (I was only 4 when this came out) but grew up with this showing on TV a lot. Loved this movie so much as a kid and I still love it now! So many 80s kids movies that really hit the dark part of "dark children's fantasy." I've seen other reactors be shocked that kids would like this (and Siskel and Ebert thought the same thing when it came out) but there are so many of us that really loved this kind of thing.

acidnova

I've been looking forward to this one! A great watch for Spooky Season! Can't wait to see your reaction!

Man, renting things from blockbuster as a child of the early 90's was basically like russian roulette of potential trauma. The head biting at Dorothy's hand and running past the other heads lives rent free in my head.

i came to enjoy it after a couple years, but the first watch inspired some nightmares. fairuza balk, though - loved her then, and it only grew.

This movie scared the hell out of me when I was a kid, especially Mombi's heads. Dorothy is 9 or 10 in the books. The movie is based on the second and third books.

danzthename

This movie traumatized me as a kid. The 80s were rough on kids man

For Tik Tok, there is an actor inside the suit, bent over and basically had to walk backwards while looking through his legs in order to walk forwards as Tik Tok. There are pictures online that show him inside the suit. I remember seeing an interview with Fairuza Balk talking about how she would try to fan him in between takes to help keep him cool.

I believe they bound Judy Garland's breasts in an attempt to make her appear younger in the Wizard of Oz.

This one scared the every loving shit out me - I was only five - trauma is an undersell - I literally stopped eating pumpkin for several years…

Absolutely watch The Wiz. It stands on its own. Return to Oz is an annual watch for me, so bizarre, so many cool effects. The nurse is indeed being arrested at the end, they don’t explain but earlier the other girl said they keep damaged patients in the basement so presumably that was discovered during the fire at the clinic.

This was one of my favorite childhood movies that I feel like never got the loved it deserved. I enjoyed you both’s reactions to it. A lot of reactors are pretty close-minded about it. The Wizard of Oz concept was Dorothy dreaming of the people irl as people in Oz who she encountered, and this movie mirrors that. You caught the Gnome King being the Doctor and Mombi being the nurse. Tick Tock was the electrical machine with the face at the beginning of the movie. Jack was the small pumpkin that Ozma brought Dorothy in her room. And the Wheelers were the workers wheeling the gurney that Dorothy was strapped down to. I think this movie is aesthetically amazing still to watch and also love the gothic steam punk vibes to it. You mentioned “Wicked” and when you watch that movie they show a map of Oz where you can see the Deadly Desert on it. Also they reference Mombi as being one of the teachers in Wicked as well.

Omg, I can't believe so many of you in the comments have rewatched this movie often as kids!! You lot are brave af. It terrified me so much as a child, that I've never dared rewatch it ever again and I'm even scared to press play now!

Lola Lirola

Fairuza will always be Worst Witch for me. So cute!

🤣 so true! So true. I rented (or insisted my mom rent) so many movies based on title and cover alone, it's a miracle we came out relatively okay.

I'm a massive fan of the Oz books, and I love this movie, so I'd like to give you some background details! There are 14 Oz novels written by L. Frank Baum and a collection of short stories. Other authors have contributed to the series since his passing, and there's considered the "Famous Forty" of official Oz books. This movie depicts the characters' more accurately than the 1939 classic. Dorothy is around 10 in the books, and Judy Garland's depiction was supposed to be 12 years old. The designs for many of the fantastical characters, such as the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman, are based on the illustrations of John R. Neill, who illustrated books 2-14 of Baum's. Another thing to keep in mind is that Oz in the books is a real place Dorothy went to, not a dream, so that's why in this film she wasn't actually being shocked like you speculated. In fact, the beginnings and ends of both the Wizard of Oz and Return to Oz films were created for the movies. The books get into and out of Oz pretty quickly, so the electroshock hospital was a fabrication for this. As you saw, this film is an adaptation of The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz, the second and third books in the series (also my two favorites). Plotwise, this is basically just Ozma of Oz (3rd book) with a couple of characters and scenes from Land of Oz (2nd book). Princess Mombi in this film is an amalgam of the evil witch Mombi from book 2 and the multi-headed Princess Langwidere from book 3 (who's really just a nuisance and not a villain). A couple of final fun facts: Baum retconned in book 3 that all animals in Oz could talk, even ones from outside of Oz (like Billina). In a later book, he justified why Toto didn't talk in the first book by saying Toto always had the ability to talk there, but chose not to. Also, the Nome King (yes that's how it's spelled), is a far less visually intimidating antagonist in the book, but still very powerful. He's actually the most frequently reappearing antagonist in all of Baum's Oz novels, appearing as the villain in books 3, 6, and 8. Finally, Ozma is a really fascinating Ozite character. She's the main character of book 2 (in which Dorothy doesn't appear.) Cursed by Mombi to disguise her royal lineage, she's raised as the servant boy Tip. Tip creates Jack Pumpkinhead to scare Mombi. Mombi brings Jack to life, and Tip and Jack escape together. Hence why Jack calls her his mother (or in the book, father, since they don't know Ozma's a girl yet). At the end of the book (spoiler alert for an over century old novel), Glinda transforms Ozma into her true self to benevolently rule over Oz (taking control from the Scarecrow who decides he never really wanted it anyway). Because of this transformation and Ozma's story as a whole, she has been seen as a, likely unintentional, trans allegory for a long time.

Thank you so much, fantastic reaction. My sister and I loved to traumatize ourselves with this when we were kids. I was most scared of the wheelers and when she grabs the powder of life and the head wakes up then all the heads wake up.

My family watched DeepStar Six when I was a kid because of the box. And they were mad at me all weekend.

Chemical Em

perfect nightmare fuel to fall asleep too -the practical effects are amazing!

GemmaBeeBee

I don’t think they ever explain why the egg is poison to the gnomes - in the book they explain that as gnomes are composed of rock, they are molten at the core near their heart and if they swallow an egg it will hatch inside them because of the heat. It will then start pecking at their heart - which is a horrific image! As a kid not as horrific to me as Mombi’s head screaming Dorothy’s name!

Youtalkingtome

The whole time I was watching, I kept thinking about how terrifying this must have been to children at the time.

seth e.

have you done Something Wicked This Way Comes? another dark 80s Disney live action, based on the Ray Bradbury book!

acidnova

That was fantastic! Really enjoyed Adam's enthusiasm and delight. Very cool to see the inner workings.

Youtalkingtome

You're right aesthetically this film is amazing and it has me so ready for Halloween!

Youtalkingtome

Wow, I really have to read some of these. They sound so fascinating

I'm also a HUGE fan of the Oz books...I even have a tattoo of that O-Z crest. I love aspects of this film, such as the visuals and (especially) David Shire's score, but I feel like the story adaptation just missed the boat. The first book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was illustrated by W. W. Denslow but after that John R. Neill did the beautiful illustrations and these are where the character designs were primarily taken from. This was a fun rewatch with you guys...it has become a cult classic among fans and as you said represents the best of dark 80's fantasy filmmaking.

David Wayne Fox

Also a huge book fan...this summary is great. I was not a huge fan of the screenplay... for example, why was Dorothy able to run all the way from Munchkinland to the Emerald City in what seemed to be in a matter of minutes? ...but I love the production, sets, character design and (especially) the music.

rojowo

Yeah, that felt like a plot hole. I also wasn't a fan of Billina's comedy; it felt a little grating at times. But it's still such an entertaining movie to me

David Wayne Fox

The humor is quite Baumian...bad puns and all (which I love, being a constant spouter of dad jokes!).
