Omg, this is in my top 5 favorite movies. I’m so excited

2728 have successfully swum the English channel which means swimming 30-35 miles which can take anywhere from 7-27 hours with the average time being 13 hours 24 minutes.

You guys would love the Duke 2020 Feel Good Jim Broadbent Hellen Mirren film but very tastefully done

Paul King's first movie was called Bunny and the Bull and he directed the TV show The Mighty Boosh. Both are much weirder and more adult than the films of his you've seen, but worth checking out. The Mighty Boosh is especially hilarious

Dannielle

Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw filmed a mini series (which is very good) taround the same time as this movie where they were love interests and there is a really funny clip of Hugh Grant on Graham Norton saying how he spent that year trying to either kill or sleep with him.

Noah Taylor who plays Phibs appeared in the movie Max (2002) playing Hitler alongside John Cusack it’s a really good movie.

I'm glad I got to rewatch this with you guys this Saturday night. It always puts a smile on my face. I also agree, might be the best performance of Hugh Grant's career. The way he commits 100% to that goofy role is perfection.

Hugh Grant has been having a lot of fun playing very fun villains in recent years. He's got a fairly similar role in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is so much better and more fun than you would ever imagine a Dungeons & Dragons movie to be.

once again hitting play with two marmalade sandwiches. it's tradition now. keeping emergency marmalade for Paddington in Peru.

At some point you should also watch Hugh Grant's last classic RomCom he did with Drew Barrymore around 2007, I think. It's called Music and Lyrics and has a lot of hilariously meta bits about a formerly popular leading man ageing out of the entertainment industry and trying to stay relevant. Even the stereotypical age difference between him and Barrymore makes kind of sense in that case.

Jessica Hynes (Miss Kitts, the lady who runs the newspaper stand) was one of the leads in a brief British sitcom in 1999 called Spaced, across from a young Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. It was only 14 episodes but quite funny and memorable. It's got the sharpness and density of pop culture/cinematic references that went on to define The Cornetto Trilogy, and they made great and creative use of a pretty nonexistent budget. I haven't rewatched the show in some time but I remember it fondly and it was nice to see Jessica pop up in her Shaun of the Dead cameo and her role here. If you're ever curious about her, Pegg, and Frost's early career days, I think you might find Spaced entertaining.

Lola Lirola

Spaced is really good!! I adore Jessica Hynes. She was also in Years and Years, a criminally underwatched miniseries that has become terrifyingly prophetic about the state of the world...

Lyla

The funny security guard who crushed on Mr Brown dressed as the cleaning lady and Mr Buchanan dressed as a nun, is actually the other co writer of these movies, Simon Farnaby! Very funny man.

Chemical Em

hugh grant is also great in the tv series "a very english scandal"

Ben Gilbert

Yes! It’s called A Very English Scandal and is based on a real political scandal.

GemmaBeeBee

That was the Russell T Davies series wasn’t it? Depressed the hell out of me because I could absolutely see it all happening over the next few years, turns out it wasn’t wrong 😔

Lola Lirola

It was, yes! I haven't dared rewatch it, but I swear I get flashbacks to how it all goes when I read the news...

Mathilde

That movie has the best music video ever 😁! All the songs are great bops to be honest

lee

ooh I'll check it out! I can't help it, I love a hauntingly prescient piece of media and that cast looks pretty great

Pam Nail

The actor who plays the judge also played Albert Einstein in Oppenheimer. This is such a special movie. WHo knew a movie about a talking bear could have such a tight script, such a menacing villain, and provide such an elegant commentary on the criminal justice system?

Youtalkingtome

I heard it was really good! I unfortunately know nothing about D&D

Youtalkingtome

I don't know if this is a hot take but I think he could put a refreshing spin on Bond. I think he could deliver something that would be a nice throwback to Connery or Moore

dys

You really don't have to know anything about D&D, the movie is just really good in its own right, it's irreverent and hilarious but with a lot of heart.

vala p

I'm not used to seeing him wearing pants 👻

Shout out to my girl Gertrude Ederle. 🏊 My swimming hero when I was younger.

Lyla

Haha same!

Roland

Well Paul King already did his Bond homage...the bit where Paddington is stuck underwater in the train carriage and Mrs Brown is unable to save him is straight out of Casino Royale. :D

Roland

Oh that guy! :D

Roland

The politician in jail who says "I couldn't possibly comment" is channeling the diabolical Francis Urquhart from the British version of House Of Cards. :D

Roland

The scene where Phoenix Buchanan thanks his theatrical heroes that the pop-up book is still in his possession "Oh, thank Larry it’s there. Thank Larry, Johnny, and all the ghosts of the avenue." He's referring to Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir John Gielgud, two giants of the West End stage (and screen as well of course). The always-brilliant John Sessions quotes this wonderful story from Gielgud, enjoy. 🤩🤣 https://youtu.be/SYztGsd1ezs?is=1vBQSJ7aDdsePxC9
