Up Next on Buffy: Something Blue - Still in pain over Oz’s departure, Willow does a spell that goes wrong (or too right?) and everything she says comes true. Giles is blinded. Xander is set upon by demons. Amy is de-ratted for a second. And Buffy and Spike get engaged and make out a lot. Anya’s old boss, D’Hoffryn, offers Willow a job as a vengeance demon. (Regarding Riley: He and Buffy have a picnic date in this episode, but they're not together-together yet.)

Love this episode and the writing is really great. I feel like this is the time when Angel season 1 goes from good to great. And Cordelia doesn't know that Doyle is part demon. When she saw Doyle in demon form at the party, she attacked him and then when he popped back up with his human face, she said "oh no, look what they did to you!" She didn't connect the dots that she'd attacked Doyle.

This one is a gut punch. SMG always gets me with her “It’s not enough time!” She really sells it, and although David is great with his wondrous joy, followed by regret and stoicism, she’s the one who elevates their scenes with her nuanced emoting. The whole thing is heartbreaking, and it is, indeed, one of the best episodes of the season. As much as Riley whined about being a normal Joe and being a liability to Buffy, this episode makes me think he was absolutely right. Neither Riley nor human Angel can do much to help Buffy, but they certainly can get into trouble they ultimately can’t handle, and if Buffy has to rescue them, then that’s a problem. Also, the show “Angel”is focused on Redemption, and Angel’s perpetual sacrifice is necessary in that journey, because he has SO much carnage to be accountable for. Having the rest of the show with human Angel wasn’t feasible, but it was a dazzling vision while it lasted. Still, it really sucks that he made the decision for both of them without consulting her. I get that he thought that was the only way they could go through with it, but it’s just another instance of someone else deciding what’s best for Buffy without consulting her, and thus robbing her of her agency. Many fans revere this episode, but the ones who don’t can’t forgive Angel for his high-handed treatment of the situation and view his unilateral action as a profound betrayal to Buffy.

You’re doing the good work.

In the goodbye scene, you can hear David say "Sarah, please" because Sarah was being so convincingly upset that he forgot they were acting for a second. I love that they kept that in. Love this one, though I cringe a lot at the post-coital lovey-dovey stuff. Not that it's not realistic, but there's a reason that stuff is private. No one needs to see that! :P And this is our introduction to the Oracles, and I love what they bring to the lore and how they build on the idea of the "Powers That Be" (who were mentioned in the first episode as the entities that give Doyle his visions).

Willow

I know everyone was all: you have to watch them concurrently!!!11 but honestly watching this now with the context/ hindsight of the last few episodes with Riley is hilarious.

acidnova

It'll be strange when we eventually get to Angel season 5 and these are no longer being posted.

danzthename

Wow. I just went back and watched that part again. You really can hear him say, "Sarah, please..." Awww...that kinda makes it even sadder :(

Daniel Lydford

This episode didn't land for me because in the timeline of the two series it's just a few months after the end of Buffy Season 3, and it seems overly sentimental given how things played out in that finale.

TalynOne

Personally I like it when you get your predictions wrong, it makes the true reveal reaction so much more interesting. It would be boring if everything was predictable.

Kevin L

When their love theme starts playing... Oh man, that gets me every time 🥹

Jontor11

This is a such a great cross-over. That was quite a sacrifice on Angel's part. Being the only one that remembers the day. In the next episode of Buffy, it starts with Buffy telling Willow that she saw Angel in LA for 5 minutes, and it was only pain. She then has her first date with Riley.

Gail Hislop

Oh my heart at the goodbye scene 💔 what a gut punch knowing they had that precious time together and never will again and she won’t remember, but Angel will for eternity. Both Sarah and David crush it in that scene. And as someone else has noted it felt so real David reacted to Sarah’s heartbreak as if it was real with a response you could miss if you didn’t know about it😢

One of the buffy related podcasts i listen to (bc i can't like anything a normal amount, and i think about buffy/angel for at least 35%of my waking hours 😂) has decided that the oracles are named Barb and Jeff, and now every time i see this episode I can't not mentally think of them as Barb and Jeff. I love how snarky Jeff is, and i also think about time as much as Barb does 😂

BrummaGen

That final goodbye always gets me...

Kj

I personally love their love theme. I immediately flashback to season 2 of buffy.

Jamie Morgan

Honestly, when you two get your opening predictions wrong, it has me rubbing my hands together in glee like a cartoon villain! It just means your reactions are going to be even better!

Lola Lirola

Omg, stahp! 😭 I never noticed that!

JC

Regarding your opening. One of Whedon’s quotes about writing was something along the lines of “Make it dark, make it grim, make it hard, but for god’s sakes make them laugh”.

Youtalkingtome

Then this one must have been awesome, because we were SO wrong. :)

Mariska Costeris

That is hilarious and very fitting somehow. Which podcast is that, would love to know.

Mariska Costeris

This episode made it impossible for me to root for Riley or care about that relationship when I first watched season 4 back in the day.

Erica

Prophecy Girls! I've listened to a decent handful of buffy podcasts over the years, and Prophecy Girls and Buffering the Vampire Slayer are probably tied for my #1 spot. PG is about to start s5 of Angel and im so stoked 😂

Erica

Oh! Some questions for you guys: a few weeks ago we saw Oz and spike! Obviously we have Cordelia as a full-time cast member, and we got a visit from Buffy this week. -who do you guys think we're most likely to see cross over moving forward? -who would YOU most like to see cross over? -who do you think you'd be most surprised to see on the show?

Anjali Agarwal

Cordelia has some of the best lines on this show. My queen! :)

Daniel Lydford

Given that at the time both series were airing on the same network in back-to-back time slots it wasn't necessary to go back to a previous story line during cross-over episodes. When this aired in real time Buffy arrived in LA moments after Zander tells her at the end of the episode that Angel was in Sunnydale.

Barbara Panigot

❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥😩😩 *sigh*

It sounds like the Buffy reboot is dead for now - when the execs (or *an exec, by some accounts) killed it after they'd already started making it, I think that caused a big falling out between SMG and the rights holders. Not sure there's a lot of trust to base it on. But never say never.

Youtalkingtome

Jonathan again would be surprising. But I'd like to see Faith somewhere.

Erica

I once heard someone refer to hum as "boring anus," which is so immature, but also very funny 🤣

kosmickrab

I like when you guy speculate or give your theories. For shows I've seen, it's fun to see how close or far off you are on your predictions. For one's I'm watching for the first time with you, there might be things you see I didn't consider.

Nannette

Honestly I hate storylines that end up boiling down to "and it never happened" This one in particular feels disrespectful to the character of Buffy too. He’ll have these memories of sleeping with her and she doesn’t even know it happened? That’s honestly pretty gross
