“You forgot your phone!” “Oh I can get another one” One of my favourite stupid little jokes LOL

Youtalkingtome

It was great! I also loved that Annie had to take a small clip out of her hair for Jeff to realize she is attractive.

“The best compliment our sports program gets is that our basketball team is really gay” is a great line because not only is it just such an absurd thing to say, but i appreciate that it implies being gay is something for a sports team to aspire to.

I like the dig at Jeff "massaging his nether regions to the E! Channel" when Joel McHale was in the middle of his time as host of The Soup haha

Leah W.

No clue if it's leading anywhere, but I ship it lol. It's kind of fun because I wasn't expecting it

You're so right! The Dean's delivery seemed to have a small shade of pride in it to really sell it.

Youtalkingtome

I like how out-of-the-blue it comes. Isn't that how so many friends-to-partners moves go? It felt pretty real.

Bruce apparently did used to be a stereotypically gay name, and according to Lou Ferrigno that's why the censors made them change the Hulk's name to David Banner for the 70s series.

Youtalkingtome

That's precisely what I was thinking about when they said Bruce: why was Hollywood so gay-panicked about what seemed to be a perfectly normal name? I'm sure there is some history behind it (was it a code for more necessarily discreet times? I have so many questions!).

Youtalkingtome

I LOVED The Soup when he hosted! I never cared about celebrity gossip, but he was a blast.

dys

I was so confused by it as a kid because my intro to the Hulk was the 90s animated series where he was Bruce, but then I caught reruns of the 70s series on Scifi Channel (because what else was there to watch on daytime cable when you were home sick as a kid in the 90s) where he was David. Makes no sense to me either.

The age gap is a little uncomfortable with Annie being 18 and Jeff being 30 something, even though IRL Alison Brie was 26 when the first season came out. With the age gap between the *actors* it feels less weird, though I'm biased since my parents met when my mom was in her mid-to-late 20s and my dad was in his late 30s with a similar age gap, but a 30-year-old dating an 18-year-old *should* feel creepy.

Michael Bennett

Jannie wasn't on my bingo card, but okay. I feel like this is the kind of show that can just decide to do whatever they want in any particular episode, and they'll just make it make sense. They can pull out the biggest "she let her hair down" trope, but the show is so irreverent that it doesn't detract, it's just funny.

Carl Wilson

It seems like nobody knows exactly where the connection came from (aside from that "Bruce" gives the user the opportunity to go "oooooh" and lisp on the s sound) but comedians in the 60s and 70s were already using it, notably Johnny Carson in sketches on the Tonight Show, so that's probably what popularized it from what might have been a more inside joke to mainstream culture. (See also "Percy," "Terrence," etc.) Not coincidentally, the number of kids named "Bruce" plummeted between the 50s and the 70s.

Carl Wilson

It's ridiculous but they sure made sure that Alison Brie's hair looked *incredible when she took it down. They also had her dressed in shirts with a high neckline earlier in the episode to increase the contrast.

Carl Wilson

The good thing is that Jeff *clearly thinks it's a bad idea for that reason, and he's not otherwise depicted as having a lot of compunctions about what hot woman he sleeps with.

Suzanne Whyte

Jeff is mid 30’s and Annie is 18/19. The age gap is creepy and in real life the relationship wouldn’t be a good idea but you can’t deny the chemistry that seemed to come out of nowhere. They seemed to have more chemistry than Annie and Troy or Jeff and Britta but just because you have chemistry with someone doesn’t mean you have to act on it.

Leah W.

Yeah. As it is a comedy, I haven't been taking anything too seriously. As a result, I'm not as disturbed by the age gap as I would be in any other scenario. But I also completely forgot what ages the characters were supposed to be lol.
