Fraggle Rock was an HBO show for Americans?! That’s so weird. It was CBC here in Canada. The national public broadcaster here. I guess that makes them getting into the Sesame Street game for a while less odd.

The initial story is that they didn't have anything left to write for his character. Then Joss revealed Glenn Quinn (Doyle) was written off because his severe heroin addiction made him increasingly unreliable on set. Tragically, he died three years later of an accidental heroin overdose on December 3, 2002, at the age of 32.

This is the episode that truly sets Angel apart from Buffy. From now on plot armor doesn't mean much. RIP Glenn Quinn

The way I’ve heard it was it was always planned to kill off Doyle mid season that’s why they took the chance on hiring Glenn but if his character had been very popular they may have reconsidered. Joss wanted to kill off someone season 1 of Buffy but was talked out of it.

That final line is perfection. "Is that it? Am I done?" It is such a gut punch and so early in the show too to have a main character die.

When I initially got to this episode on my first ever watch of Angel, I was so upset re Doyle that I actually refused to keep watching. He was so essential to the ensemble and, therefore the show, to me, that I just got too sad whenever I tried to continue on without him! Despite being a massive fan of Buffy, and liking Angel a lot before I got to this episode. I think it was only when I reached my fourth rewatch of Buffy that I finally realised it was too crazy to give up on a show so connected to it, and that I had been enjoying so much. But it genuinely took me a good while! It seems silly now, especially considering all the brilliant stuff that comes later, but he was that integral to me! We didn't get that long with him but Glenn Quinn's Doyle had the perfect mixture of charm, wit, humour and heart for me, as well as lots of interesting flaws and bucket loads of potential. Luckily though, this is an excellent send off for him. The threats of hate and intolerance are certainly heavy handed sure, but it makes for a genuinely dark, creepy, timely, and very moving episode and goodbye to this character. I love Doyle in all his episodes, but I especially love how much he really gets to shine in this one, really stepping up into a newfound confidence and clarity of vision that he's never seemed to have before. It makes me wistful to think of how they would have explored all this over a longer time frame and developed his arc more intricately over the course of the show, but I'm glad we got to see some of these different aspects to him in episodes like this, so he still feels like a pretty well developed character for one who leaves us in episode 9. And so, it's goodbye to our first Angel investigations set up! I will miss this trio's special and unique chemistry and closeness, in this early version of the show that like them, was still trying to figure out how all this works. Though fun, this part of the show could certainly be inconsistent and more than a little unsure of itself at times, but these three characters and actors working together were always excellent. Good - no great - things are to come, including character wise, but I will always miss this trio. I loved each of their dynamics so much. RIP Doyle, RIP Glenn Quinn.

According to Wikipedia: "An international co-production of Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, Fraggle Rock was co-produced by British television company Television South (TVS), the CBC, American pay television service HBO, and Henson Associates."

Always an emotional watch. I still remember watching it with my best friend while we were rooming together in college when it first aired and we were both so shocked and upset. I love the framing device of filming the commercial and recontextualizing the words at the end.

No matter how many times I've seen this episode it never gets easier, my heart breaks every time. I love the way Doyle's commercial is played for laughs but as it comes back around at the end it's so sad and the perfect final line of "Am I done?" Also David and Glenn were really close on set, and I felt that David's acting in the goodbye scene with Doyle was so much more emotional than his acting in the goodbye to Buffy, to me it felt like he was really sad his friend would be gone.

Vale Doyle and Vale Glenn Quinn. Such a shocking episode ending and it still is hard to watch all these years later. It's special that the character was given a heroes ending and good of Joss to write it that way for him. And this episode is where Angel as a show is set apart from Buffy, the graphic nature of several scenes that are so dark and the fact that it will kill off a beloved character so early in a season! It leaves you wondering then, how far will this show take things and keeps you hanging on as you watch. But Doyle left a lasting impression behind.

This episode always gets me 🥺

Up Next on Buffy: Hush - Mostly silent episode. Fairy tale monsters called The Gentlemen steal everyone’s voices. Communication through wipe boards, overhead projectors, and miming. Buffy and Riley’s first kiss (and also discovery of each other’s secret). Willow meets Tara at Wicca group.

vala p

Whoa, that sounds like a wild episode, bet the fans hate that one 😛

For every door that closes, another opens

With the combo of Buffy/Angel these past couple of weeks, we were on a roll in November 1999!

RIP Glenn Quinn (May 28, 1970 - Dec 3, 2002)

Joss whedon was obsessed with the idea of killing someone off who was in the opening credits. In s1 of buffy, it was supposed to be the character Jesse (played by Eric Balfour), but making 2 separate opening credits sequences (one with him and one without) was too expensive

acidnova

I'm glad they were able to get better budgets for later seasons (for many reasons) because getting to have the alternate credits with Jonathan for "Superstar" was just *chef's kiss*

danzthename

So sad. I loved Doyle when I first started this show. This was a shocker. And his real-life issues make it even sadder.

Jontor11

There was some talk of bringing back Doyle as a guest character in S4, but the actor died so nothing came out of it.

PBS is sort of our public broadcaster in the US, and has been the home of Sesame Street, but it's not quite as much a centralized government-run broadcaster like CBC or BBC, though it got part of its funding from government grants until Trump. I leave you Mr. Rogers testifying before the Senate for funding for public broadcasting, in a time when someone in a different political party could hear someone out in good faith and *change their mind*: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKy7ljRr0AA

I had a similar experience IRL. I worked for a non-profit adult residential care facility. they prodced a promational video featuring our facility and some of the clients and families we serviced. The last shot was of my main client as he finished washing the dishes and sayng "I done! I done!" Sadly... he passed a year later and now that video just breaks my heart.

James Roberts

That was the official reason. I think it was BS. Glen Quinn had an addiction problem that was interfering with his work.

dys

It did make it harder for me to gel with our core cast on my first watch of the series, because it felt like we were just settling in with them just in time for Doyle to be written off. I'm still more attached to Buffy as a show just because we have that core cast that's been mostly consistent even into season 5 and become a true found-family over that time, even though we did lose characters like Jenny, Oz, and Cordelia (whether to death or their journeys taking them elsewhere) and gain new members like Tara and Anya... who we've already had more time with than Doyle.

I think this comment counts as a spoiler. If you feel it necessary to discuss the events and larger context surrounding the creative choices leading to this character development, then this comment, as currently written, should be posted after the dedication.

Kt B

Spoilers. Everyone commenting on this creative choice as if there’s no obligation to preserve the mystery about what this means for the show’s future.

What a compelling actor Glenn Quinn was. Seeing how he reacts to others in a scene, such a natural... Wish we could have him for a whole season or two.

Erica

I edited it, hopefully it's better!

Doyle's sacrifice is really moving. RIP to him, and to the actor. A smaller thing that bothers me in this episode, though, goes back to a thing that's really inconsistent in the Buffy/Angel mythos: We're told repeatedly on BtVS that no demons walking the earth are pure demon, that they're all to some degree "tainted" by mortal blood the way that vampires are. To get to full demon, you need something like the mayor's Ascension. But we'd already had the Judge, whose power would apparently burn out anything with humanity in it, but said there was no humanity in Angelus and he couldn't be burned. Huh? Then we have this magic light bomb that apparently wouldn't just kill "half-breeds" but vampires etc - but the demons in the Scourge, even if they aren't of "mixed race" so to speak, would also not have pure demon blood, according to S3 Buffy. So the light would get them too. I dunno if anyone has a head-canon/ret-con for this?

acidnova

I've been bothered by this in the past but I was thinking about it and I think it still works. Because in the real world, were all the Nazis truly "pure-bred"? No, and that's something that has come up with other groups founded on racist beliefs. So in the end, I think it's appropriate that The Scourge are also misguided and misinformed in their own hatred. Now, the Judge thing saying that Angel has no humanity - I'll let that go as that was really just them saying he had no soul. Ultimately, there are inconsistencies in the shows' mythologies but I am happy that they managed to be as consistent as they were even though there are some contradictions.

Kirsten Stewart

I see your Fraggle Rock and raise you an HR Puff’n’Stuff - need to be that extra decade longer in the tooth, but there was a show made by a bunch of adults having self-induced hallucinations 😂

I loved the Flute.

Jamie Morgan

This episode somehow gets harder on every rewatch. I was physically shaking watching it this time. As tragic as Doyle's story is, the story of the actor is somehow much, much worse. RIP bud.

Roland

I watched this show when it came out, but apparently had completely forgotten about this ending. Dayum....

Roland

I'm glad we don't have anything like the Scourge in our society these days. Oh hey, look, political ads targeting Muslims and trans folks....

Roland

While well-meaning, all of this stuff is spoilers, since the lads were commenting that weird things can happen, the Whedonverse being what it is. Ideally someone would have posted guidance in the comments of the previous episode.

BrummaGen

If you love Muppets, you might consider one day watching Farscape - weird and wonderful sci fi with some of the alien cast (including a couple of regulars) created by Jim Henson Creature Shop. The shock of this episode is not the same on rewatch, but the emotional punch hits just as hard at the end, and the appreciation of the writing - Doyle's path to taking on the hero mantle - only grows with each watch.

Anjali Agarwal

Still just as sad today as ever. RIP Glenn Quinn.

acidnova

I would absolutely love if they did Farscape! I'm currently watching Casual Nerd's reactions to them so at least I've got a way to scratch that itch! And Jessie Gender and Council of Geeks teamed up to do an audio-only podcast watch through (Jessie was a first-timer and Vera was the veteran) and that was really fun. The Henson's work on the aliens for that show was incredible. Loved how they were able to create some truly unique characters and not just humanoids with bumpy foreheads (I love Star Trek but, you know).

ScarlettMi

We get American channels in Canada, including PBS. Which is why I was surprised about HBO’s involvement way back during Fraggle’s initial run. HBO made a deal back in 2016 to pay for first-run rights to new episodes of Sesame Street. (Now that deal is with Netflix.)

Youtalkingtome

Oh, she wishes! I didn't like soda when I was a kid, so she always got angry when I asked for water with my Happy Meals.

Youtalkingtome

They are nonstop. Who knew every Democrat running for office wants to force your kids to change gender?

Youtalkingtome

I was really getting invested into Doyle as a character too

BrummaGen

Yay, another Farscape fan! I'm watching with Casual Nerd too, and I followed FunnyLilGal's reactions. Before either of these, and my first venture into Patreon, was a podcast called 'Muppets, Sex and Trauma' which is one Farscape fan (Sara Ezat) introducing two friends (one a big Trekkie) to the show for the first time.

Ashley Thomas

i love fraggle rock. watched it a lot as a kid.

Ashley Thomas

this episode is so good. i was crying when he was filming the commercial in the beginning cuz i knew where it was going. honestly, i know its wrong to blame him but that teen is the reason doyle died. if he hadnt run off then the boat would have left in time before the scurge got there and no one would have had to sacrifice themself. its fine to have feelings about whats happening but that kid put all his people at risk by taking off like that. i know doyle was only in a handful of episodes but i miss him the whole rest of the show. and its extra sad knowing that glenn quinn , the actor, died a few years later. i grew up watching him on roseanne and he and david (angel) were friends. doyle was such a hero in this, and found redemption for his past mistake. at least he went out doing something important.

Willow

They call it getting Jossed for a reason. He wanted Jesse in the credits of the first episode of Buffy to fuck with people.
