1. I feel like this was Michelle’s episode. She finally got to show off her acting chops, and she really shined. I truly felt for Dawn here.. it’s like finding out you’re adopted as a child, but 10000000x worse. 2. I really like how Spike and Buffy communicate. He just tells it like it is and doesn’t beat around the bush. And somehow, she ends up opening up to him and being vulnerable without even realizing it. I also love how Spike is the one (apart from Buffy and Joyce) who acknowledges Dawn as a person in this episode after finding out the truth about her. The rest of the Scoobies keep talking about her like she’s not real or just some kind of energy. 3. Giles: “We must not tell anyone” Also Giles: “ Dear Diary… Dawn is the key”. C’mon Giles.

Michelle acted her ass off this episode

The episode does a great job of depicting the moment a child finds out they are adopted and the "you're not my mom" phase. It brings back some of my own memories. I didn't go through something exactly like this (obviously) but I'm not biologically related to my mom and I've definitely gone through moments like this in my childhood.

I was so looking forward to your reaction to Ben/Glory here and then you seemed frozen about it. Maybe that's a good reaction for that moment. In any event this was a great episode where we found out so much, but there is so much more coming. I

- The moment with the picture frame IS sad for everyone but Dawn, though, because whatever it's a memory of something that never happened. - I'm reeeeally tired of Dawn constantly accidentally overhearing things. This used to happen with Buffy and it always ended badly. - Spike is 100% right. And just because he can't hurt humans doesn't mean he can't protect Dawn. It was a good idea for him to keep her company. Anything that might hurt her is either a demon (which he *can* fight) or a human creep, who is less likely to bother her if she's not alone. - I thought it was pretty smart (and brave!) for Dawn to ask Glory about the Key. She'd know way more than Buffy or anyone else Dawn knows. - So now we know some more about Ben, and I can't say much more about that until later. But get ready for another round of gaslighting! :P

Small thing, but I loved that Tara and Willow’s banishment spell was so glittery — it was like they glitter-bombed their enemy into the literal sky! The show’s been riding the “queer is magic, magic is queer” metaphor for a while, but it feels like it really hit its stride now that Tara is a full Scoobie. 10/10, no notes!

Cotubug

The fact Michelle is only 14 here, what a talent.

Mithroch

Ben/Glory? Wait... do you think there's a connection between the two?

dys

I love most of the writing of this episode but I really hate the trope of someone overhearing only the part that sounds bad out of context.

Kimba

I think Buffy and Giles should have kept the secret from the others, it puts everyone in danger including of course Dawn. Also Giles should definitely not have written it down. They keep the dumbest secrets from each other but this is one that actually made sense to keep.

Michael Barrett

I'm not sure where the confusion has come from, but Buffy did not know Ben before meeting him at the hospital this season.

Youtalkingtome

I honestly can't decide if telling her was right or wrong (you make a really strong case for not), but her finding out on her own like this was a worst-case scenario.

Youtalkingtome

Right? She was absolutely always going to be a star.

Youtalkingtome

For sure, the overhearing device (especially the "she only heard the bad part out of context trope) has been WAY overused the last few episodes.

Youtalkingtome

Honestly, we feel like we need more info about Ben specifically. While he certainly seems the more benevolent of the two, I look forward to learning more about him and how he is tied to Glory.

Youtalkingtome

It's such a tough situation. I have nothing but empathy for Dawn. I honestly have no idea what a "normal reaction," for lack of a better phrase, would be to finding out something so fundamentally shattering to your own identity.

Youtalkingtome

Michelle was wonderful in this episode! What a terrible way for her to find out.

Youtalkingtome

Oh, I thought they knew each other from before. I must have misunderstood their interaction at Ben's introduction.

So i think dawn writing in her diary "She still thinks I'm Little Miss Nobody, just her dumb little sister. Boy, is she in for a surprise," has a much more mundane explanation. Dawn is 14, and just sort of beginning to grasp at personhood and having an inner life, as well as an outer life with people outside of her immediate family. As a young teen, you haven't experienced sonder yet, and it's easy to feel like this newish experience of knowing yourself better than others know you is unique to you. Sorry if I'm rambling, but essentially it comes down to the title of that episode, "real me." i think EVERY 14 year old feels like nobody knows the "real me" bc *obviously* no one else could *possibly* have as rich an inner life as me. Also it could just be the writers tricking us 😂

Erica

Also I agree with tara when she said "at least vampires just kill you." glory's brain sucking thing sounds traumatic in the moment it happens, but absolutely terrifying afterwards

Kimba

She never would have found out if Buffy and Giles didn’t blab to everyone else and Giles didn’t write down all his secrets in his little book. But I guess she had to learn some way for the show to go on.

vala p

Well, to defend Giles, he's repeatedly seen that he's surrounded by people who don't read, he probably thought something written in a book was pretty safe.

Erica

Lastly, i don't think buffy and ben did go to school together. This episode marks buffy's 20th birthday, and ben, being an intern, would have to have finished med school and is likely 25 at the youngest (unless he's secretly Victoria Javadi)

Neill Shaughness

Michelle screeching "Get out!" breaks my heart every time

Carl Wilson

Yeah, she met him because he noticed her and helped her get information about her mom when the doctors at the hospital weren't forthcoming. He didn't go to Sunnydale, either high school or college.

Carl Wilson

A very blink-and-you'll-miss-it dialogue reference: When Dawn comes in, one of the patients on the mental ward says, amid other babble, "What is the frequency?" That's a reference to a famous incident in the mid-80s when TV newscaster Dan Rather was attacked on the street in NYC one night by a guy who kept yelling, "Kenneth, what is the frequency?" It later turned out that it was a schizophrenic man who thought the TV networks were beaming messages into his brain, and wanted to know how. But it took ten years for him to be found, sadly after he broke into a studio and killed an NBC stagehand while trying to get his answer to the same question. Before that, people doubted Rather's story (there were rumours about it being a gay bashing, if I remember right) and it became kind of a pop-culture trope, appearing in several places including in a 1994 R.E.M song called "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" that became the first song to debut at no. 1 on the Modern Rock chart.

James B.

Love angsty Dawn. I quote "Get out, get out, get out!" all the time. Angst is way better than brooding, and I appreciate it a lot more as an adult.

acidnova

I think the only person Giles would have to ever worry about going through his books is Willow, lol. He could write anything he wants about Xander, though - he's definitely not going to read it.

Mithroch

Yeah... that makes sense. Now... on to another subject. Do we suspect that Ben and Glory are somehow... linked?

Jamie Morgan

Dawn's "What am I?" lives rent-free in my head, it is haunting. I agree with you that it can be a metaphor for suicidal ideation. I went through a suicidal phase at around Dawn's age and I got very existential about it. Nothing as grim as what Dawn did to herself, thankfully, but I definitely tortured myself in other ways just to "prove" I was alive.

Vicky N

A nice subtle touch when Glory describes the key as shimmering green something and Dawn is slightly out of frame and focus wearing a green top. This show rewards the repeat viewers so you can catch all the details they put into everything. The writing, the acting, the directing, the dialogues, the philosophical themes, the symbolism, even the clothes the characters are wearing.

Michael Barrett

If I remember right, the second time we see him (when the "helpful" doctor is talking past Buffy) she recognises him and calls him by name. The first time we meet him is when he *lends* Dr Dawn his stethoscope, and she hears Riley's heart going ten to the dozen, but he's only on screen briefly.
