The West Wing, Season 1, Episode 18

Comments

Luca Siracusa (Bob)

This episode was such a good balance between comedy and drama The Gina and CJ, the Charlie and CJ, Toby and Mandy, they had certain moments of jokes about stuff The meeting of Josh, the one between Jed and CJ, the Secret Service one had less jokes and more serious moments and the six meetings perfectly balanced out We got some of the best quotes of season one (The one from Sam about Education is actually one of my favorites in the whole show) and some very very funny moments like The Jackal and Bartlet taking on George Washington The more The West Wing progress, the more every aspect of the world and the characters fall in place and create this super-complete but not complicated ramification of relationships, idealisms, roles and choices that grow even further And let me tell you, this will all become even better with every episode

Allison Janney, would do this in her trailer on breaks. Richard Schiff caught wind and had Sorkin watch it. He loved it so much he wrote it in, but said CJ would do it less perfect than AJ (Allison Janney)

I muted both the episode and you guys during the jackal - one of only a handful of moments that give me douche chills in this show.

Eugene Levy was in the running with Richard Schiff for Toby. Right call, but man I would have loved to see that interpretation.

Charlie explained the car keys - you guys were chatting

As another under-informed white guy, I took it upon myself to try and learn a bit more about the case for reparations, and lo and behold Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote a widely-lauded article on it in 2014. It's absolutely worth a bit of your time to read. (In finding the link for that, I see that TNC revisited the article in 2019, and I'll definitely be reading that follow-up this week). https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2014/06/the-case-for-reparations/361631/ https://www.newyorker.com/news/the-new-yorker-interview/ta-nehisi-coates-revisits-the-case-for-reparations

Thank you! I will read through that. One of the many great things about the show is the opportunity to look at government and history through many lenses.
