Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Season 1, Episode 18

So the woman who plays Josh's Aunt is Lea Salonga. She is a Broadway star and a Disney Legend. She sang for both Princess Jasmine and Mulan for Disney. And she was the first Asian woman to win a Tony Award back in 1991.

That's awesome, Princess Jasmine was always my favorite Disney Princess. That really explains the Aladdin homage.

When I first saw this finale, toward the end I was thinking "Oh no, don't do this!" -- to the characters. For the show, it's a great choice. Greg, Josh, and Rebecca all made poor choices, and it puts us in a great position to launch Season 2. (Remember it was planned as a story of exactly 4 seasons, from the beginning.) Josh's startled face at the end is perfect, capped by the delayed "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" title card. Paula's song is a pastiche of "Rose's Turn" from Gypsy -- the moment when the mother, Rose, snaps and tells us all her deranged thoughts, and her name lights up behind her. Someone actually compiled a YouTube video of the visual/musical references for all the Season 1 songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-GFLoUkqvk&t=305s The animated fairy tale "Slumbered" is of course fictional. I've always understood the title to be a light spoof of the way that Disney, in a certain period, seemed to choose only past-tense verbs for titles of its versions of such stories: "Tangled," "Frozen."

Could you do a mini-episode where you review / rate the series? I've never watched this show, let me know whether it's worth my time investment.

This was a trainwreck of an episode, but also entirely perfect for the theme of the show....which is satirizing rom coms. Like, typically this is the end of the movie: they finally remove the impediments to their big moment (ie, other boy/girlfriends), and sail away into the night together to finally consummate their love story. The End. They all live happily ever after....right? If the show had just ended the season there, it would have been a bummer, but to see the fairy tale ending start to fall apart when Rebecca tells Josh the truth....oh boy. Can't wait for season 2!

It's worth your time. If you like a really funny musical dramedy that's much more complex than the adversing lets on.

"What's the rush? I'm sorry; I'm old." Once again, I'm with you entirely, Kevin. Rebecca's got a bad pattern of impulsiveness and a propensity to substitute sex for what she really wants. It's not just Rebecca though, which again is why this show is so insightful. Plenty of people want the *feeling* of intimacy and connection but don't have the discipline to wait for the time it takes to authentically develop both of those things. So they just have sex instead. It's a shortcut that rarely works long-term.

Youtalkingtome

Yes, it's almost like a coping mechanism. Not to say that sex is a bad thing but it does seem self destructive in a way.

Man, I watched the last episode on Youtube and wondered why you didn't react to "Paula's Turn" at all, and then I watched the episode on Patreon aand understood - it's because it wasn't in last episode, it's in this one !!! Then I just laughed at all your comments about how terrible Paula was being and "why is she like that? why does she care?" thinking "GUYS GUYS JUST WAIT SHE'S GOING TO EXPLAIN IT ALL YOU HAVE NO IDEA"

Youtalkingtome

Paula is one of our favorites, she had a moment there where we didn't understand why she was doing what she was doing, but it made sense after this.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this, but it's even funnier, because the woman that's singing the "In One Indescribable Instant" song at the wedding was the actual singing voice of Princess Jasmine from Aladdin, and Fa Mulan. from Mulan.

Youtalkingtome

We had someone point that out to us! That makes it so much better when you have that in the back of your mind!

Hot take - if the person you're with does not want to dance in front of a bunch of people, respect that - it doesn't make them, as you say here, a "monster." Respect your partner's boundaries.

Im sorry, but Rebecca and Josh were giving each other longing looks while at a wedding with other people, then she was trying to have a serious moment with Greg when she knew he was drunk. Then when he insecurely faceplanted she immediately jumped at having sec with the man she was staring at longingly. So though Greg might have dropped the ball (for good reason) Rebecca was 100% in the wrong!
