This episode consisted of being afraid that the space shuttle Colombia wouldn’t be able to re-enter the atmosphere. 5 years after this episode Colombia would disintegrate during re-entry killing the seven astronauts inside.

great episode... can't wait until next week.

Real life not a west wing spoiler…

The thing about the Oval Office rug is apocryphal. The seal doesn't change for wartime, but the eagle *did* face the arrows many years ago, until 1945 when President Truman modified the seal so that the eagle faced the the olive branch instead. It's been that way ever since, though there are some artifacts in the White House that carry the old version of the seal.

Such a great episode, the way the tension is built up throughout - and this rewatch I noticed how great the music is - it really helps in building the suspense. Well, you guys might be able to wait a week, but I’m off to watch Season 2!

FYI, Martin Sheen played JFK in an NBC miniseries in 1983. His WW contract stipulated that he could never play a US president again. He was also a narrator in the Oliver Stone movie JFK. I liked that they incorporated the historical Dr. Josiah Bartlett into the President’s family history. PS-Tim Matheson also played JFK in a miniseries about Jackie Kennedy in 2000.

I'm glad you weren't spoiled by the HBO sub-headline that appears if you pause the episode. If I see a way to notify HBO MAX I'll send them a note about it. Oh and I see that there's ANOTHER spoiler in the sub-headline for S2E1, so make sure you set it up right (subtitle settings etc), so you can just hit play and let it run.

There was very nearly a terrible accident during the filming of the gunfire scene: > The leg of actress Jorja Fox, playing Agent Gina Toscano, was accidentally run over during the final scene. She was rushed to the emergency room but was fine and came away with only bruises.[8] According to Aaron Sorkin, Fox later apologized, saying it was her fault for missing her mark.[9] <

You guys embody everything a first-watcher feels watching The West Wing The whole episode starts with this half-cliffhanger and gets you back 12 hours making you groan BECAUSE you want to know. They build this thing about the signal so early you kinda dismiss it and then it becomes the thing about the shuttle The speeches between Toby and Sam, Toby and Bartlet, Leo and Josh, CJ and Leo in this episode are so deep and carry a whole season of emotions and things that's been happening You both understood every aspect of every scene of every character in the last 22 episodes, THAT'S WHY you had that reaction at the end. You felt in love with so many great characters, you care for all of them and someone has been shot. You do not only want to know who because of plot stuff, you want to know who because you - like us - care for them I know you did not do anything on purpose, but you guys had an amazing experience on Season 1 thanks to your wisdom, your attention and your hearts Let me just tell you this: Season 2 is gonna handle things in a way you've never EVER experienced and I know - I know for sure - you both are gonna have the greatest time watching it

Finally! I have been waiting all week!! Hope the next episode is early on your watch list for next week. Can't wait

I'm so happy that of all the reaction channels out there, you guys got to The West Wing first, very few give more than superficial reactions, and I love the personal insight. I'm Belgian so a show that goes in depth about US politics isn't an obvious watch, but this is just too good and easily one of my top 5 shows of all time (Northern Exposure, The Wire, Sopranos and a last spot that changes every few years).

The shows is 99% people walking and talking in offices, so when they pull out a real life emergency it hits HARD!!!! Not like shows where it happens every week and you become inured to it. Looking forward to the next ones as always!!!

There's a space shuttle in Gail's fish bowl when Danny and CJ are arguing. Love those.

Sorkin hadn't decided who, if anybody, was going to be hit, so they actually had to restage the WHOLE situation again exactly in Washington to shoot the season 2 opener lol. He says NBC wasn't happy and wished he was a better writer lol.

What's great about watching things like this back in the day, is that you couldn't really research if any actor's contracts were up, or being renegotiated. There were no leaks about who was coming back and who wasn't... you were left with months of speculation. The bittersweet agony of not knowing, "WHO'S BEEN HIT? WHO'S BEEN HIT", until that next season premiere. Agony you are left with until Monday. Enjoy the wonderment... & strap in.

...oh, and God forbid you missed it live!

Not comparing the shows in terms of quality, but the most recent example I can think of is The Walking Dead. They had a season finale where they killed a main character but didn't show who it was. That being said, The West Wing is a much better show than The Walking Dead.

Youtalkingtome

Wow, thank you for saying that. Truly we couldn't appreciate it anymore. We do connect to this show very strongly and we are happy that we can share it with people who also feel the same way. Thanks for being here and we'll see you in the next episode!!

That's why we love Patreon, we learn so much not only about the shows we are watching but real history as well. Thanks for sharing, we really appreciate it.

Sorkin was notorious for getting the scripts out last minute and costing NBC $$. The dialogue is so dense, but I’ve never heard anyone in the cast complain in interviews about it. Sorkin was also addicted to cocaine at this time and did ALL of the writing in these early seasons.

I used to record them on a VCR each week just in case I wasn’t home when it was on. There was no way I could go into work the next day and not discuss it with people. GOT was like that too.

"Originally airing on May 17, 2000, ""What Kind of Day Has It Been"" is Episode 22 of Season 1 of The West Wing. It is the 22nd episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 9.2, placing it as the #1 ranked episode of this season and #5 out of all 155 episodes."

The Season 2 Premiere was on 10/4/2000 - we all had to wait 140 days. Consider yourselves lucky it won't be that long for you:)

I love this finale so much. One touch I've always liked is when the shooting begins, Gina pushes Charlie down. And even though her sole responsibility is Zoey, I really like how they had her protect Charlie with the split second she had before she grabbed Zoey. Great reaction as always guys!

West Wing is my very favorite show. This was the first episode I ever saw. I watched it live from down the hallway because it was past my bedtime and I was hooked.
