Pen15, Season 1, Episode 1

It's pronounced "pen fifteen," but it most definitely is a penis joke that you you played on each other in middle school: "Wanna join the Pen15 club?" Bonus point for writing it on your friend's arm in pen/marker so they basically are branded with "penis" for the next week 😁 For someone who is only a little older than the creators of this show, the nostalgia and relatable cringe factor in this show is profound. With every song they play in this episode I am 13 again, with everything that that age horrifically entails...

I’m of the opinion that the whole series is intended to be Anna and Maya’s memory of this time, which is why they’re adults and all the other kids are kids. There are other elements of the show that support this idea, especially later on. In terms of secondhand embarrassment, buckle up. The pilot doesn’t even break the top ten “hide your face and peek between your fingers” moments. It really is an incredible recreation of being 12 and 13 years old, and really of being a specific KIND of 12 and 13-year old. Everybody has a shit time in middle school, but it can be especially hard if you’re particularly bright or imaginative or just an outside the box personality.

THIS. This show is definitely like their perception of that time period, based on their memories.

I'm not sure if I'm going to watch THESE particular full-length reactions, or just wait for the YouTube edited version. I think having these adults playing middle schoolers is hilarious, but I have a hard time watching this show because it brings back too much from an uncomfortable time. I'm almost the same age as them, so our middle school time lines match up....and it was not a great time to remember. Anna's gangly posture, lank hair, and flare jeans that are a little too short.....it's too relatable. Gives me flashbacks. It's like CXG Season 1, episode 3 when Rebecca throws that party where only three other kids came....*shudder*

Your last paragraph....yep. Too familiar in a relatable cringe way.
