Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Season 3, Episode 2

5 songs this time! Admittedly the last one is a reprise of "Paula's Turn" from Season 1, and another is the Season 3 theme song -- which isn't about a split personality, but rather about the very mixed messages that pop culture sends us about what "crazy" means. We get the point of view of a country singer (clearly, you're right, Carrie Underwood), a wispy romantic diva, a rocker, and a rapper (Eminem), and some think crazy is good and some call it bad. As Rebecca says at the end, hearing it all, "huh"? *"Head in the Clouds" is inspired by "Singin' in the Rain" as immortally performed by Gene Kelly. Vincent Rodriguez III was primarily doing dance roles onstage (not on Broadway) before this series, especially tap dancing, so this is right in his sweet spot. (Since the series, he's really been only doing TV, and not a ton of that. He has said that he hopes to be cast as a movie superhero.) * "Strip Away My Conscience" is pure Bob Fosse sex-as-show-biz. Your mention of Chicago was apt, and Cabaret and Pippin are also in the neighborhood. * "The Buzzing from the Bathroom" is practically traced directly over "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" from Les Mis, just about note for note, only the lyrics and actual pitches have been changed. :)

PS: This is episode 2, as you say within the video. For future members, it might be kind to amend the title of this reaction.

This is one of my favorite episodes, musically speaking. Rebecca is so sexy in "Strip Away My Conscience" that she makes me question my sexuality. Fun note, this is the first time a network show ever talked about the clitoris and what it does. The word was used on "The Office", but not explained.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the music at the end!

I love Les Mis so much, and I go see it multiple times each time the tour comes through Chicago. After I saw this episode, there is always a part of me that thinks of this show during Empty Chairs at Empty Tables. And that is an inappropriate time to laugh during the show 😂

Lmao of course The Office used it. Maybe it's because we watch it on Netflix but I don't think of this as a network show.

just catching up now - loving your reactions. don't believe for a second that Rebecca is better - that's not how this show works :D if it was, it wouldn't be as impactful as it ultimately is ^^

You're going to flip flop a lot if you let whether you like a character depend on their actions in a particular scene/episode. Most of the main characters make terrible, terrible choices... as well as wonderfully kind and generous ones. It's one of the things that I like most about the show. I'm so intrigued by the scene where Josh says he's a good person, because there's a lot underneath that. Part of it is a kneejerk reaction to his guilt, but it's more than that. It's also about the conflict between his sense of self ("I'm a positive person who doesn't like hurting people") and his choices ("I was selfish and hurt someone I love"), and the burden of reconciling those things ("If what I did really was as bad as I feel it was, then I'm not who I thought I was, and if I'm not who I thought I was...who am I?").

Yes, Josh's conundrum is unique. He usually is the happy go lucky positive guy but he's acting completely innocent and it's driving us crazy! We don't dislike any of the characters really but we are having a hard time with what they are doing and how they are acting.

Glad that it has been realized that Josh is as garbagy as Rebecca. However, it is ironic (and hypocritical) to miss that Paula has to this episode still never acknowledged her role in all of this even after she belted the original version of this song. Like Rebecca, Paula didn't hear her own culpability and instead let herself off the hook while putting it all on Rebecca. Top 3 least liked garbage characters are: 1. Josh 2. Paula 3. Rebecca In contract to my top 5 favorites: 1. Nathaniel 2. Greg 3. Heather 4. Valencia 5. Trent
