Mermaid Day

One of my favorite episodes. Noah Reid (Patrick) is a talented musician, besides singing, he plays piano, guitar, and accordion. He has 3 albums out and is about to go on tour. Also Dan Levy's face acting was great. David reacting to Patrick's performance, he went through about 10 different emotions just using his expressions.

As Mermaid pointed out that really is Noah Reid playing and singing, he is incredible and I actually have his cover of this song on my spotify lol. One of my favorite parts about that scene is Catherine O'hara, you can see at a couple of points she is actually crying. Apparently she was so touched and shocked by Noah's singing and thought the romance between David and Patrick was so perfect she literally couldn't stop crying. The moment in which she is shocked and grabs david's arm was unscripted and is the actual moment of shock and disbelief Catherine O'hara felt when she first heard Noah on the first take. Likewise, the song "Simply the Best" has lots of personal meaning to Dan Levy, who said that represents one of his first loves. When they wrote this episode Dan Levy was unsure if he really wanted to use the song since it meant so much to him. So Noah recorded himself on his cellphone playing this song this way and texted it to Dan to see if it would work. Dan was so amazed that he said he just burst into tears because that is how he always wanted the song sung to him by someone special.

One of the most memorable episodes for sure, Patrick singing is so beautiful, and the emotions in David's face...

I love seeing Alexis find some professional passion. I think her emotional growth has helped her shift some of her judgmental tendencies into actually wanting to offer helpful advice in the right context as a potential career path. I think the show does a great job with David and Alexis of keeping their flare but showing they are also competent.

Thank you for telling me these things before I rewatch the episode! Now I’m definitely going to cry (again). 😆 As I should. 💜

Yes, Noah Reid (Patrick) is a trained musician. Simply the Best is one of Daniel Levy's favorite songs so he gave it to Noah to play it. Noah took it home and did the arrangement to sing it. They didn't didn't rehearse that part so when Noah sang it was the first time everyone heard it. If you go back watch that part you can see the back of Catherine O'Hara's head dabbing her eyes because it brought her to tears.

I loved you guys talking about how this show has three characters (Stevie, Patrick, and Ted) that are not part of the original, core four “main” characters, but are such wonderful characters that the writers (shout out to Dan & Eugene as show runners for this) recognized the potential of. Stevie and Patrick get more screen time because they both have strong relationships with David, so narratively they are easier to write in, but Ted definitely has a lot of potential as a character.

Just wanted to shout out Annie Murphy’s physical comedy. Her presentation in this episode is a good indicator of how incredible she is.

The motel did have a name before this -- its sign said "Schitt's Creek Motel." The Rosebud Motel sounds much more inviting, doesn't it? One more voice in praise of Noah Reid's musical talents. He has just as much of a musical career as an acting career, with 3 albums out, and a tour scheduled. This is one of the few times we see David wearing colors.

He's an amazing side character. You actually care about him and every time he's on screen, you can't take your eyes off him.

Love this episode and Noah is so talented. I will be going to see him play in September when he is on tour and I cannot wait.

In terms of "It's just a picture, Stevie!" "Just smile!" "What's the big deal?" - As someone with autism, I can attest that sometimes people are overwhelmed by things that are not generally considered a "big deal." It's not always best practice to make that person feel that they're abnormal for their feelings.
