Mad Men, Season 3, Episode 6

Actuarial Lurker

One of the best episodes of the entire series

Chris

I agree. And I’ve been looking forward to their reaction to the tractor/lawnmower scene since they started this season!

Actuarial Lurker

The actor playing Conrad Hilton is very well cast. He is almost a dead ringer for the real life person. And he DID appear on the July 19, 1963 Time Magazine cover. So this episode is just before and the next episode 7/23 is right after. This was AFTER he was married to Zsa Zsa Gabor and before he married the grandmother of Paris Hilton

Ben Clifford

The complete seriousness of the line "he'll never golf again!" is the best. This episode is often people's favourite of the series, btw. I don't necessarily agree but it's definitely memorable

To respond to your question at the end of the reaction, I think you’re fair to Betty but probably too easy on Don. He goes to get a cake at Sally’s birthday and doesn’t come home, leaveshis family for a month in California without word, ditches them at the memorial day celebration to be with Bobbie Barrett, etc. He’s worse than just a standard absentee father. That’s just my take on it though. Loved the episode reaction as always.

Mad Men is one of my all time favorite shows. I have watched this entire series many times over, and your reactions are spot on and so insightful! I am thoroughly enjoying this rewatch with you guys! And you are right, Betty is a much less sympathetic character so far this season.

Chris

Underrated moment: Paul Kinsey timing his folk song for the PPL walkthrough. So ridiculous!

Robert Bauman

Sally's relationship with both of her parents is an interesting storyline, and (no spoilers) is something that you will see again as the show goes on and she gets older. She is clearly a bit of a daddy's girl and I think that plays a part in Betty's cold treatment of her.

I'm so excited for you guys to continue watching this show 😭 it's amazing all the way through, but almost all of my favorite episodes are still to come.

Ah, bless. The first new Mad Men episode you two upload since I started patronizing you and it's this one. Also, minor trivia: People were really questioning the Dr. Pepper in the vending machine and whether or not it was period appropriate because those were the kinds of fans that Matthew Weiner made of us. Also, fun fact I just made up: The Barbie in this episode was played by Annabelle.

This show blends real life history into itself so well. It's obviously very fictionalized but when it weaves stuff like this in it gives the show almost a more surreal feeling. Great stuff.

I don't know if it's my favorite of the series but I can tell that it's gunna be important. It sets up a lot for many of these characters. Pryce seemingly isn't going anywhere now. What does this mean for Sterling Cooper? They obviously aren't in good graces now....Yes that was a fantastic line as well. Love Joan and Don's reaction in the waiting room.

When we started the show we were much harder on Don and we've said it many times. He's a great business man but a terrible husband. He is full of flaws but wouldn't say that he is a bad guy. Yes he has done horrible things in his marriage, I don't believe Betty and Don should be together. I think they would be much happier divorced.

Youtalkingtome

She's very important to the show. She gets almost as much screen time as any other supporting character. I wonder what it is building towards. With seven seasons what do the kids look like by the end? Do they hate their parents?

Youtalkingtome

This might be our favorite show right now. Don't get us wrong, The West Wing is our favorite or even second favorite. However Mad Men is so unique and well written, it is unlike anything i've ever seen.

heheheheheh

Assorted musings: Joan's bloody dress is meant as a kind of foreshadowing to Jackie Kennedy's bloody dress. The man who got his leg cut off was named Guy - hence the "Guy walks into an advertising agency" Lane trying to hide his glasses is meant to signal how people viewed any kind of disability back in the day. Wearing glasses made you look weak. Especially in Britain. Guy getting his foot chopped off - he will be a disabled man. Doesn't matter how talented.

Guy walks in but he doesn't walk out.
