Hacks, Season 1, Episode 10

Ah, I do love this show about Ava the blazing hot garbage fire and Deborah the red hot embers of a once great garbage fire. I hope you get back to it, the coming seasons is when it really starts paying out. It's a funny exercise to try and decide which of the ladies is worse and more at fault. Ava is entitled, selfish, ungenerous, mercenary, opportunistic and also keeps making the worst possible decisions, while Deborah is a textbook controlling, narcissist abuser. (Sometimes I forget which scenes I've seen in this show and which I've seen in The Devil Wears Prada.) But then, we can forgive Deborah a lot because we know the enormous weight of the struggles she's faced, and Ava gets sympathy because a) she's very aware of her faults and b) she's terribly clever and actually right about most of the stuff she crusades for. I don't think I've ever seen a heroic character quite like Ava - heroic in the sense that she sacrifices herself and suffers to do what's right and save the day, which she does over and over. And I don't think I've seen a story of any kind like Hacks, with such terribly human and flawed and vulnerable characters who just want to work to pay their bills but then keep expressing such profound beauty and truth and love.
