The West Wing, Season 3, Episode 7

Love the way Nancy tells Leo to settle down at the start. Also somebody needs to teach Leo about parabolic mics and not talking about the most sensitive of all national security secrets with the door wide open. On state funding for arts I like how it is that the world likes to pretend there isn't a massive commercial market for art, not only in that it shouldn't need subsidising, but the simple fact is it distorts that market. The people who get government funding for art at the individual project level tend to be people who are already relatively famous artists who already ship projects for high values - they're never talented artists who nobody has ever heard of picked out of a hat at random. There are many different types of arts funding but the woman who Toby is sparring has a point - although it's very clear there's a specific agenda and a deal to be done, she still has a point. Important national collections, art teaching, even specific art events; but using public money to support individual art projects is crazy. "here's a big pile of cash, just throw it around and see what happens" - if absolutely nothing else you're just begging for nepotism and corruption, and as a result it undoubtedly comes with reams of paperwork attach that shouldn't need to exist. If it has artistic value it will have monetary value, problem solved - and the best part is nobody has to decide what deserves it and what doesn't. I say this who buys modern art (paintings - I'm all about abstracts in oil), but she has a point. Criminalization of politics, hm, wonder if that's relevant at the moment. The episode has a light tone, but obviously very important topics.

One of my favorite moments is Bartlett thumping his head on the desk and saying "Oh my god, am I still here?" I liked that this episode had some lighter moments to balance out the seriousness of the past ten or so episodes. And Joe, you're right about Sam; there are many times when he just comes off as way too naive for an experienced political assistant who used to be a corporate lawyer. I love that Hal Holbrook showed up in this series; there are many more guest appearances of great actors to come (and some who become series regulars, but that's a few seasons away...no spoilers!).

Weird Magic

The Bruno speech was awesome and made even better knowing that Ron Silver was one of the few actors on set who was a Conservative. Apparently, there was a lot of good political discussion off-camera with him and the others. Dedicated to your craft to have those words come out of your mouth on TV and displayed forever for everyone when they don't necessarily match your ideology. Originally airing on November 14, 2001, 'Gone Quiet' is Episode 7 of Season 3 of The West Wing. It is the 51st episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.9, placing it as the #20 ranked episode of this season and #44 out of all the episodes shown so far.

This one is #128 in my overall rank list, but #1 in Bruno Gianelli Awesomness. His "I AM TIRED" rant is easily my favorite moment from him in the series. This is a light episode that doesn't stand out too much, but I think we need it after the past several episodes (especially if you're binging and haven't had to wait through the summer hiatus). They can't all be "Two Cathedrals"; we'd never survive. :P Love the recurring thing of having a good answer to the Big Question. It's easy to laugh at the Majority Leader -- though, if you've made the decision to run, you should have something better prepared than what we hear in the episode. Bartlet is right, it's not an easy question, and we see that when Josh and CJ think they have a good one and Donna dismisses it as empty drivel.

Joy M

The actress who plays the aide that wants to get rid of the NEA also played the wife of Josh’s trauma counselor on the tv show Northern Exposure (which you should watch if you haven’t).

Joy M

They are all just messing with CJ about the President’s answer to why he wants to be president. It’s to get under her skin.

Paul T Hewes

Albie Duncan is one of my favorite guest characters. He is a curmudgeons but only because he knows what the stakes are and what history is.

Kat Deuchars

According to Wikipedia, Ron Silver was a lifelong Democrat up until 9/11. He might have been a conservative Democrat but there might not have been as much of a rift between his values and the dialogue when they were shooting this episode.

Kat Deuchars

I adore Bruno's "Liberal is not a dirty word" rant Also, Toby's pairs of great art and great thought

Any time I’m reminded of that “I’m Too Sexy” song, all I can think of is CJ’s rendition and the way she and Carol talk about it! “Hyperbole . . . So it’s not about somebody having a problem?” 🤣 I’d love a podcast where those two characters break down popular songs.

I'm with you guys I like those old man submarine stories :) I didnt recognize on previous viewings in my younger days that most if not all of the stories he was telling were true stories in US history. My favorite of the ones he was talking about was the 1974 story of Project Azorian where the CIA with help from Howard Hughes tried to lift a sunken Soviet sub 3 miles down into a specialy designed recovery ship designed to look like anything but. One of the most expensive clandestine operations in our history and theres not so much as even a shitty movie or tv show about it.

Youtalkingtome

You're right very important topics. Yeah unfortunately the worst person in the room had a point. It's tough but I agree with everything you said.

Youtalkingtome

Love the amount of A list actors that pop up on the show. I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling his naivety. He's sweet and very idealistic, which I appreciate, but it's like come on man! You're playing the game.

Youtalkingtome

It's not an easy question but I would hope after being President for almost 4 years that would inform his answer. This episode was great and I'd rank it highly. Maybe not top 10 but somewhere in the top 20 probably.

Youtalkingtome

It's speeches like those that make the hairs on my arm stand up and make me feel alive. I just wanna scream yes! It's so well written and makes me love Sorkin even more.

Youtalkingtome

Wow, that sounds like a movie that would have been made in the late 70s or at least a tv movie. That's so incredibly interesting.

Is it sad that I knew "casus belli" from playing thousands of hours of Civ?

JVTrickypants

"I'm too sexy for the other things..."

JVTrickypants

"Anybody know what $105 million dollars means?" Ginger: "I'm a simple girl, Toby." I'm just going to post the funny lines I love from this episode.

JVTrickypants

Oliver: Nature, like a woman, will seduce you with its sights and its scents and its touch, and then it breaks your ankle, also like a woman. Abbey: What the hell kind of dates are you going on, Oliver? Oliver: I hear you.

Just had my first Schweppes Bitter Lemon. Not bad.

jimmy2k4o .

its funny that you use donald trump and sarah palin for how stupid the answer is. well it's atcually a direct quote from ted kennedy during his 1980 campaign the lion of not only the senate, but getting away with DUI manslaughter!not saying republicans are stupid they are, like democrats……. But (rhetoricalh) if Donald trump drove drunk of a bridge and left a girl to drown….. (chappquicddix) walked From The scene and went home to Sleep. Morning later he reported the accident (after meeting with macnama, soreson and other Kennedy fixers they used to their power and influence to avoid a manslaughter charge. How in your heart of hearts of Hearts you throw easily target like GOP be bashing. And I love you guys but your a little smug sometimes. You trying to keep your politics out of it. They even manipulated mr and Mrs kopechne. You say polical Things which I feel Are untrue but are sort

Youtalkingtome

I mean we said what we said. We used two solid examples and Ted Kennedy had nothing to do with either one. Yeah that was a messed up situation but there are stupid Republicans just like there are stupid Democrats.

jimmy2k4o .

Ofcourse there are dumb dems and dumb republicans but you to a quote from a dumb democrat and if your views didn’t know, you attributed it to palin or trump. You don’t think that falling short of honestly. It’s like you were saying the comment was Sarah pilin or trump level stupid but it was Said by a very respected democrat. (Just not for his driving or his speed at calling the police) Even when west wing makes a joke about idiot democrats you spin it into republicans…….. To say it had nothing to do with ted Kennedy….sure nothing at all, except the fact it was a direct quote from him. Sure blame the gop for stuff the gop do, but now your mocking goo for gaffs made by democrats. I’m curious in you heart of hearts did you even know that was a ted Kennedy quote?

Youtalkingtome

To be honest, no I didn't. But come on, Trump has some doozies as does Palin. So did Bush. I mean come on.

Luca Siracusa (Bob)

I really love how this lighter episode has so many funny moments like the million dollar bits, Bartlet banging his head on the desk, him in the Situation Room repeating what Leo said, CJ too sexy for many things and IN THE RIGHT END they hit you with the "Why do you want to be president?" And I love how Bartlet doesn't have an answer for two opposite reasons: - The lighter tone of the episode, him having to hear all the stories and then having to wait for a radio signal that arrive right at the moment he just couldn't take it anymore so he's really: "Not today, CJ, really" - The serious one: he doesn't want that. He does not want to be president, he just wants what being president helps you. He wants to create a better world, stop wars, give to the americans a future, create jobs, build schools, develop medicine andcure diseases. He just wants to be something more than being a president. And he just really want to be president not for the title, but for "it lets me fulfill all these things" Something that would look bad on EVERY OTHER PERSON, but not on Bartlet

Youtalkingtome

Right. He sees being President as his duty and he honors it. It's not a desire for power but a desire to do good.
