Midnight at the Concord

Let's say something about Rachel Brosnahan's (Midge) acting for a minute... She completely sold us the terryfied, yet nailing it on stage bit like a PRO! What a grace to see her acting these lines so... marvelously ;-)

I love that you guys got to this episode so quickly via the binge (thank you for that, by the way), but I HATE that I have to wait a week for y'all to react to the next one. ❤️😫❤️ I say call an audible & just binge the rest of season 2. 😉

You asked about other great shows on Prime. The three that immediately come to mind are: The Boys (2019-), an edgy, cynical live-action superhero show based on the comics by Garth Ennis. It’s by far their biggest hit show in terms of viewership, although I personally think that it has lost a lot of its freshness over time and has kind of become the thing it was meant to lampoon. Invincible (2021-), an excellent animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s subversive superhero comic. The Expanse (2015-2022), my all-time favorite science fiction show, based on a series of novels. Technically it was originally a SyFy show, but it got cancelled after season 3 and Prime picked it up for seasons 4-6. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend watching any of them for the channel, since all three already have a ton of reaction videos on YouTube, and you seem to mostly be watching stuff that nobody or next to nobody has reacted to, which I think is marvelous.

I'm laughing so hard right now! If you haven't already done it, go back and watch your faces at that moment! That should be a new thumbnail pic, or maybe a poster on your wall. Again we have an episode with amazing writing and acting, and it's impossible not to care where these characters are headed.

While I agree that Midge going back to the city without telling Susie was a shitty thing to do, I’m not sure how she logistically COULD have got the information to her. She doesn’t have a Catskills phone number for her, and I don’t think she even knows exactly where she’s staying. So far, every time Midge and Susie have talked in the Catskills it’s either been because Susie tracked her down, or because Susie summoned her to a particular meeting location. And it’s not like Midge really had time to go looking - she had to pack and leave right away to make it back in time. Maybe she could have told one of the staff to get a message to the employee with the plunger, but drawing too much attention to her could be dangerous. I also think that Midge having a much easier time confiding her secret to a relative stranger/newcomer to her life is a very realistic and relatable thing. I’m trans, and I can tell you that coming out to my parents was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. Usually, parents are the people who have known you the longest and have the strongest pre-conceived notion of who you are. Having to shatter that perception and tell them something which matters deeply to you but you know or worry they’ll disapprove of requires an insane amount of guts, and it’s very common to plan on doing it at a specific time only to find yourself unable to follow through when the moment comes. By contrast, telling a relative outsider to your life is much easier and can in fact be a great comfort, as they don’t have the same sort of strong sense of who you are, and you don’t necessarily care as much about pleasing them, so they can provide a lower-stakes chance to practice verbalizing things for the first time. Speaking of family, Shirley wearing her fur coat in the Catskills reminds me of my mother’s parents. When I would stay with them, even in the heat of summer I would have to actively fight them off from installing space heaters in my room. Some people are just never warm enough.

talking about other good prime shows i think The Boys was the one that broke the bubble and it's the most praised I think. I also really like The Man In The High Castle, it's based in a book and it's about an alternative world after ww2

So many great things coming now that Abe knows, I'm so excited for the next episodes!

Lol Midge's self-centeredness is definitely one of her defining character traits. Again, this is my favorite episode of the season along with the finale. The entire scene at the end is one of the all-time greats. Just incredible acting from Rachel and Tony. Love the cinematography happening in the car scene, and any episode that gives us Lenny automatically makes it one of the best. Jealous that you guys are experiencing the magic of Luke Kirby in this role for the first time!

Not on prime, but another fantastic quality-over-quantity show with an amazing female lead is "the Queens Gambit". I believe its netflix, and only one contained season - but its gorgeously written and shot. Also period typical, i believe 50s-60s! If you haven't seen it yet, definitely check it out!

You guys jumped somewhere I never did....when Abe said "Home" I thought he meant back to the Catskills cottage....that's where Abe's home is for a couple months yet. Originally airing on December 5, 2018, 'Midnight at the Concord' is Episode 5 of Season 2 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It is the 13th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 9.2, placing it as the #1 ranked episode of this season and #1 out of all the episodes shown so far.

So i've seen Invincible and loved it! Eagerly awaiting season 2! Yeah it seems like everyone already beat us to The Boys. Maybe we'll watch it in our free time and talk about it in some capacity.

Youtalkingtome

Yeah I can see that side of it, pre cell phone days, can you imagine. Let me just say I can only imagine how difficult that must have been, saying your truth to your parents isn't always easy but it's their job to be loving and supporting to whatever decision you make. I hope Midge's parents are and I hope to God yours were too!

Other great shows on Amazon Prime: Patriot One of four prototype shows greenlit by Amazon in their earliest days. It's really hard to pigeonhole this show. It's nominally an espionage show, but that's really just a thin blanket to bury all sorts of darkly hilarious interpersonal drama under. I'm not surprised Patriot didn't catch on (although it did earn a second season), streaming was still fairly new, and it is a deeply odd show - but based on your love of Fleabag and Mrs Maisel, I think you would really enjoy it. + The Man In The High Castle. While officially it is a Philip K Dick sci-fi show, the really odd stuff doesn't really make an appearance until significantly later in the show. The main 'creativity' is the world-building of a USA that is under Nazi and Imperial Japanese control, with a paper-thin no-man's land dividing the two global powers. It's excellent overall, albeit some of the arcs don't land as well as others. Some very dark tones in places, obviously. + ZeroZeroZero Super-tense mini-series (6 episodes?) following a shipment of narcotics across the world, with the interweaving drama of all the various parties involved. + The Expanse - this was originally on Sy-Fy for three seasons, but the nerdmeisters at Amazon obviously liked it enough to buy it when Sy-Fy ran out of money (you can tell it was a very expensive show!). The first season is a bit clunky in hindsight, but it's such a fresh and enthralling take that you probably won't notice until it's over, and by then you are into the deep weeds of the excellent later seasons. + Sneaky Pete I watched this for Giovanni Ribisi, and wasn't disappointed. A conman hides out with the family of his recently-deceased cellmate (i.e. pretending to be the latter). It's really great, not a comedy but still funny with lots and lots of heart across all three seasons. + Avoids: The Boys: It's not that it is bad, in fact the first season is excellent, it's just that I reckon you will likely find it hard to warm a Watch-A-Long audience to. The most recent season felt like a stretch as well. The Terminal List: there might have been a good story in there somewhere...they never came close to finding it. + On my long list: Catastrophe - Sharon Horgan can do no wrong. (Bad Sisters on Apple+ is eight episodes of a brilliantly hilarious mayhem, with one of the best-portrayed villains this century). Comrade Detective - someone else gave an overview, I'm intrigued by the concept.

Thanks for the recommendations! Appreciate you going into detail

I'm really starting to enjoy the little things as I binge this Patreon, like the clipped "...One" at the beginning of a lot of the vids. You guys could edit it out, but you really want to give that full experience.

Just watched this for the first time. You two at 52:24 = Priceless.
