I was worried that Joe was going to choke to death as he was mid-gulp when Philip opened the hotel room door onto the massacre scene... :D The movie, and the book that it is based on, is The French Lieutenant's Woman, and was Meryl Streep's first leading role, making her a household name. Impressed that Joe has managed to avoid the WKRP Thanksgiving thing thus far, he'll enjoy that. :)

That full first season recap was necessary because we had to wait ten months between the first and second season. Life was so difficult before streaming. When I first watched this series, I assumed the title, "The Americans," was referring to the main characters who are posing as Americans. But now I see a deeper meaning, as it seems to apply to all of these characters, and forces us to question our definition and perception of the word "American." Is Stan more of an American because of his work, even though he's failing in the role of a "good American husband"? Is Martha less of an American because she is unknowingly betraying her country? Each episode challenges our perceptions about how we should feel about each character. "The French Lieutenant's Woman" is a beautiful and unusual postmodern film with an amazing performance by Meryl Streep. It was adapted from a novel that plays with the typical narrative structure and has multiple endings. People tend to have mixed reactions to it, so I'd be interested to hear your reactions to it if you ever watch it. And definitely watch the Thanksgiving episode of "WKRP in Cincinnati"!
