I'm In Love

Not ready for this journey to end but also sooooo ready for you guys to have seen how perfectly this show wraps up. Such an incredible series finale 🥹 I'm also very glad I discovered you guys through you reacting to this.

Congrats on finishing the series, and on your outstanding commentary. Like us original-run viewers, you went into the finale a LITTLE apprehensive that it might not live up to what the series was about -- but it absolutely did, didn't it? I love that the seemingly incidental wacky detail of George growing a ponytail turned out to be the essential visual marker to let us know that a year had passed. I also love the realistic touch that Rebecca, far as she's come, isn't universally loved; she's still bad at respecting confidential information (e.g. Darryl), and White Josh has never come around on her and never will. And the perfect final line: "This is a song I wrote."

As for your questions about the concert: they did the concert twice in LA, while the last season was still running (because they had to be edited together into 42 minutes of airtime, to air right after the series finale). Then, a couple of months later, they did a slightly different concert twice at Radio City in NYC -- one of which I attended! You're right not to expect Santino Fontana to show up for the concert. Aside from any other issues, he wouldn't upstage his colleague Skylar Astin like that (you know what fanatical fangroups can be like these days). The series with Jennifer Lopez & Ray Liotta on which Santino had a recurring role for a while was Shades of Blue, on NBC. Weirdly, it debuted during the same season as CXG -- in part due to the hiatus when CXG was rejected by Showtime, was considered dead for a bit (so he felt free to pursue other work), and then was picked up by the CW. So some weeks we could see him twice in primetime. Shades of Blue honestly wasn't much good though; I watched it until his character arc ended and then stopped without regret.

The MC you recognized at the club, Michael McDonald, was the original casting for Darryl; the pilot was shot with him. Then when it moved to the CW and was retooled as an hourlong with a longer season, he declined to continue with it, was replaced by Pete Gardner, and his bits of the pilot were reshot. It's cool that they let him come full circle with it by doing a bit in the finale.

Definitely rewatch this series at some point. You pick up so many details the 2nd (or 7th) time around. Like when Paula's boss says "Let's talk..." you hear the musical melody from Paula's song "Maybe This Dream". These little nods are especially noticeable after you've listened to all of the songs a gajillion times.

I know the purpose of the show isn't who Rebecca ends up with, but I think it's interesting how they left it opened ended. I think I'm still in camp Nathaniel, further cemented by how each guy took the rejection. Josh was sad (but moved on), Greg sounded bitter and even a little bit dismissive of Rebecca's need to focus on songwriting, while Nathaniel was accepting and understanding when she turned him down. That latter response was the best one, I think. I think he's the one that "gets" Rebecca the most.

We are glad to have found you too! This show was one of our first and it was so so special. We loved this finale and wanna talk about it some more on the channel. The final shot has stuck with me all day.

Youtalkingtome

Thank you for saying that! It absolutely did nail the ending. It threw us off at first and we almost didn't catch it. It used nonlinear storytelling masterfully. This was an incredible wrap up and i'm almost sad writing this. We will miss watching this show every Wednesday.

I'm jealous you got to see that live. I'm kicking myself for only discovering this show now. I would have absolutely watched this when it was on tv. Shades of Blue lmao. What a title. It looked so bad but it was pretty big there for a while.

Youtalkingtome

Somewhere in an alternate universe...lol. If this show was on Showtime it would be insane. I love Micheal McDonald but I can't picture him as Daryl. Pete Gardner really brought a warmth to this.

Youtalkingtome

Maybe. I mean it's certainly worth taking into consideration. He isn't with anyone and let's face it, it couldn't be Josh. Greg is so interesting because he never does anything out of character. Every decision he makes is consistent with who the character is. He's had an amazing arc and did end up in a WAY healthier place but it's still Greg. Nathaniel is similar but he feels like he's come the farthest. I don't mean that as a slight on Greg at all, Nathanial feels like the one who has changed the most if that makes sense. That's just in my opinion.

If you're interested, Rachel Bloom's Youtube channel released a documentary style bonus feature for behind the scenes filming of the final episode. It's another chance to see the amazing details that went into the wonderful finale that this show gave us. I'm glad you loved it as much as the rest of us did and I hope you guys enjoy the rabbit hole of live performances they have on youtube as well. https://youtu.be/8i6x3QGW1lk?si=QSIlI2_aOu53P_t9

I didn't know that I would cry again. Every. Damn. Time. (btw, now I really hope you are successful with The Good Place because it has such similar vibes and feels...) So, I am glad that you liked it. I do think they stuck the landing very well. As an aromantic person, this series really appealed to me in these moments when it admitted that romantic love isn't the be-all and end-all of life. Every time I watch this episode I simultaneously cringe at how low Rebecca is starting with these skills and feel inspired by her to pursue my own creative interests. What do you plan to start doing more/less of as a result of watching CEG? Perhaps we can discuss a bit about how TV series change us, inspire us and push us to become better, more interesting and more well-rounded people? We will have SO much fun with the concert next week. I'd ask if you thought about doing it live with us, but I know it can be difficult to organise (YT wouldn't work, of course, but I've seen other reactors use Discord and some other platforms to do it). So just upload it when you can and we will come to laugh with you. ^_^

So.... I heard somewhere that, during one of the live shows, they performed "Fit hot guys have problems too". have you seen that one? it's a classic :D

Thank you for the journey! I'm a bit sad that it is ending but all good things have to come to an end, I guess. Now that you are finished with the story, I can finally share an insight/realization that I made about the final episodes: In more ways than one, "the guys" (Josh, Greg, and Nathaniel) are suffering from same type of romantic obstacles as Rebecca. Josh might like Rebecca a lot but ultimately, he just doesn't want to be alone. Nathaniel seems to suffer from a slight "manic pixie girl" syndrome, and views Rebecca and romance in an idealistic light. He is also just getting to know himself which is not the best basis for a relationship. Imo Greg probably has the most realistic (or least idealistic?) view on Rebecca but his attraction is rooted in many concerning motivations (e.g., "I chose you because you ignored me" + the underlying competition between Josh and Greg). So, it is unclear if Rebecca's unavailibity is (still) a thing that keeps Greg interested. Men who have a somewhat healthy view of romance and relationships (e.g., Hector, White Josh, perhaps even Scott) see Rebecca very differently and are puzzled about the interest that she keeps getting. I think this is hinting at the fact that if we, viewers, were sensible, we would not root for Rebecca as a romantic heroine. However, due to protagonistic bias, it is difficult to view Rebecca in such a critical way. She's the main POV character, and surrounded by multiple attractive love-hungry men, so of course she should have her happy ending.

Btw, sorry for writing mini essays here! I sometimes wonder if viewers of other shows fill your comment space with so many words as well. :D

Not watched a single episode yet, but your affinity for the show is obvious, so it's going on our to-watch list. What's your overall take of the show, how does it hold up over the four seasons? (You could maybe do a spoiler-free and/or spoilerific discussion about the whole show at some point?)

Youtalkingtome

We both work horrible hours lmao. So our schedule for now only permits us mornings. However, this show has made me be more introspective as a man. I will talk about my problems with a professional. I won't ignore them either. How can I be the best possible version of myself while taking other people's feelings into consideration? Self care is so important and this show really highlights that.

Youtalkingtome

Exactly, we leave her in a much better place and the guys have started their own personal journeys as well. They are just as desperate for her love as she was for theirs.

Youtalkingtome

We will be breaking it down after the concert episode. It absolutely holds up over all four seasons. It can be a little challenging in the beginning because she is stuck in toxic patterns. It's so worth the pay off though. This show is fantastic.
