Liza Weil was in the season 1 episode of "The West Wing" called "Take Out the Trash Day." She was the staff worker who leaked the info about Leo's alcoholism to the press, and with whom Leo has a great conversation at the end of the episode. I'm sure other commenters will tell you this, but that "Miami After Dark" was based on a real show called "Playboy's Penthouse." I found it on Youtube as "Lenny Bruce on Playboy's Penthouse." This episode should be required viewing for anyone trying to get into film and television, especially directors, cinematographers, and writers. And actors, of course. Well, everyone, really.

Ahh, was so excited to watch this one with you guys. Nothing will ever top this episode for me. The last 20 minutes has some of the most magical and beautiful stuff I've ever seen on television. I've probably watched it over a dozen times. The greatest relationship on the show for me outside of the central Midge/Susie one is Midge and Lenny. Even though they don't have a ton scenes, they're always meaningful and have a purpose. He's really the only person in her life who knows exactly what she's going through. It's fun to see it grow into this other thing entirely mostly because of the chemistry Amy Sherman-Palladino (and everyone) saw between Rachel and Luke. I love how they leave you in this episode like "wait did I want it to happen???" Just the two of them staring at each other in the doorway... it's so loaded with expectation. The Cuban club scene is an homage to a Soviet filmed called "I Am Cuba": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aT3Ii3hWM0. It was shot entirely as a oner and Amy (who directed the ep) only decided after they finished to grab some single shots of Midge and Lenny at the table. I'm glad she did because seeing their faces really raises the tension. The scene outside of Lenny's hotel was also shot as a oner because they were shooting as a sun was setting (even though in the show it's actually early morning) and the sky would be different after every take. They had four cameras going at once with green screens on them and they were painted out after in post. Here's a cool shot of what it actually looked like while they were filming: https://i.ibb.co/3rYQKgX/F16-IGhq-WIAAn-SFf.jpg. The opening scene at the hotel and the Miami After Dark scene were also shot as oners. It's just insane what they're able to do. The ep won cinematography but was also nominated for directing and Luke was nominated again after winning last year. Sadly, he couldn't fend off the behemoth that was Eddie Murphy returning to SNL that year, but I would've given it to him again lol.

The “Miami After Dark” show with the pipe smoking, preppy host Brye Adler is a play on Playboy After Dark (1969-1970) and its predecessor Playboy’s Penthouse (1959-1961), both hosted by Hugh Hefner. Lenny Bruce actually appeared on an episode of the latter, and when you watch it you can definitely see the similarities. You can find it on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/3G1F8m363Uw

When Midge and Lenny meet up at the bar, before going to the filming of Miami After Dark, a fan walks up to Lenny, calling him “Mr. Bruce.” Lenny responds by telling the fan that, “Mr. Bruce is my mother.” Amy Sherman-Palladino actually knew Sally Marr (Lenny Bruce's mother) when she was growing up. The line is a reference to a recurring inside joke that Marr had - whenever anyone learned who she was, she'd call herself “Mr. Bruce.”

Final bit of trivia - part of the reason why the lip syncing in the Shy Baldwin singing scenes is so convincing is because Leroy McClain (the actor) requested to sit in on all of the recording sessions with the singer (Darius De Haas) so he could see the physical machinations of the original vocal performance - what his face was doing, when he took a breath, etc. So in the episode, he isn't just mouthing along to the words, but is doing his best to physically recreate the performance.

Wow I had to do a bunch of research! :) 1. I knew that Lenny Bruce appearance was based on a 'real' show, but I had no idea that it was Hugh Hefner's program. https://youtu.be/m4oSB4-Mt9s?si=1wTYql4iJOk304oK 2. Willy Loman - the main character in Death Of A Salesman (I'm guessing he's the terrible sales guy always parodied so wonderfully in The Simpsons?) 2. Zsa Zsa Gabor https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zsa_Zsa_Gabor 3. Bella Abzug https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bella_Abzug 4. William Frawley https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Frawley 5. Playboy's Penthouse https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playboy%27s_Penthouse

another piece of dialogue from this episode, during their dance, that i’d love to shout out: L: “what’s the matter?” M: “…I just can’t think of anything funny to say.” L: “… me neither.” a gorgeous moment between two of the wittiest characters in the show when - faced with their own intimacy/connection, let go of one of their most used defences, comedy. one of my favourite moments in the series, so short, yet so incredibly potent - that’s what good writing does!

The song Lenny and Midge dance to is "Till There Was You" which most people know from the Beatles, but it was actually written for the musical "The Music Man." And a great Broadway actor cameo from Michael Arden who plays the director of Sophie's play. Michael is an actor and also a Broadway director, he won the Tony Award for Best Director this year on his work for the musical "Parade".

It felt like the culmination of what the filmmakers were striving for. The whole show they were trying to capture a certain tone and aesthetic and in this episode they absolutely nail everything. It's been a pitch perfect show so far and this episode was absolutely surpasses everything that has came before it.

Luke was better than Eddie Murphy's SNL return. I Am Cuba is a film that i've always heard about but have never seen. I'm definitely going to watch it after this. The oner of them outside the hotel is why I wanna make movies. It's perfectly shot, written and acted. The color palette is freaking beautiful in that scene. You totally want them to do it and it's all because of the mood they've created. It's completely natural and you buy it!

So I guess every actor on this show is incredible. That's insane that he did that and pulled it off so convincingly. He's really stealing this season

It's fantastic writing. It comes out left field, yet it feels like it could have been a thing all along. They've always had this chemistry between the two of them. I don't know if it's the way the actors bounce off each other or the writers intended this from day one. It's so special and I could have easily watched two more hours of it.

Amber

Gosh this is probably one of my most watched episodes of the whole series. Visually it's stunning, the music is top tier as always and the tension just keeps you so engaged at the end. Its a 10/10 episode.

This episode is kind of agonizing to watch on a couple of levels. The chemistry between Midge and Lenny is so palpable, so you’re rooting for them … but you know how it’s going to end for him and you don’t want Midge to get too close, for her sake. It really makes you wish you could change things for them.

Truly an amazing episode of television. the chemistry between them is so electric and I’ve never seen such an affective slow burn between characters. I also really appreciate how careful they were to covey how much Lenny truly respects Midge. He sees her as a comic/ colleague first and that’s something midge struggles with on stage. She has to prove she isn’t just a pretty face to everyone except Lenny. He knew from the jump she was special.

Not entirely sure how this episode isn't a 10, but somebody somewhere found something not perfect with it.... Originally airing on December 6, 2019, 'It's Comedy or Cabbage' is Episode 5 of Season 3 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It is the 23rd episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.7, placing it as the #2 ranked episode of this season and #5 out of all the episodes shown so far.

Devon Cooper

This is my second favorite Lenny episode. One of the best episodes of the series. It is shot well, the sets, and camera work like you said are absolutely phenomenal. The chemistry in the club before they dance is just unmatched.

Liza Weil also played Paris Geller on Gilmore Girls. It was a major supporting role.

Cosmic Slice

Liza Wiel who plays the bass player Carol Keen on here was the girl that was discovered by Sam on the West Wing of having Leo's medical records in season 1's "Take Out the Trash Day"

Still have never seen GG but a friend of mine is a giant fan of it. Ironically, he loves GG but doesn't care for this show.
