Trump took a lot of heat for being in the White House bunker during protests outside. As loathsome as the guy is, that was probably unfair.

FINALLY!!! This episode and it's title was the last spoiler in Lin Manuel Miranda's absolutely awesome song he did for The West Wing Weekly podcast when he was on for a Hamilton/West Wing episode. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TTD5-3fuZE [Intro: Josiah Bartlet] What's next? [Verse 1: Lin-Manuel Miranda] Ginger, get the popcorn The filibuster is in I’m Toby Ziegler with The Drop In What Kind of Day Has It Been? What I find super extra weird about Mandy's disappearance is that, in season 2, we get all these flashbacks to the campaign, when she and Josh were dating, and she's never mentioned, let alone seen.

- Nothing to do with the episode, but I thought you might appreciate this the week before Christmas -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofs-LsaZQVQ -- it's Martin Sheen, John Spencer and Stockard Channing singing "Wonderful Christmastime." Have a great holiday, guys. :-) - Sam *immediately* apologizes after the porn comment and every reactor I've ever seen completely misses it because they're busy scolding him. :P - In other Sam news, "you couldn't have called at a better time" should have thrown up EVERY red flag in the universe. Perfectly timed call? OF COURSE it was a trap, Sam! - The dummy intern is played by David Burtka, who is the husband of Neil Patrick Harris.

Weird Magic

Just a suggestion - might not want to watch/read the guest star lineup at the beginning for the next couple episodes if you want to be surprised by any possible Rob Richie drop-ins. :) Sorkin has either Written By or Teleplay By credits on every episode the first 4 seasons - he did almost everything himself. You are correct that he had "writers" working for him, but they were more like researchers. He'd give them a task like "how does the space shuttle program work" and they'd give him a ton of info - then he would write based on that. Originally airing on May 8, 2002, 'The Black Vera Wang' is Episode 20 of Season 3 of The West Wing. It is the 64th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.2, placing it as the #7 ranked episode of this season and #34 out of all the episodes shown so far.

I think this one falls flat because it’s a set up for the next two episodes/season finale. You really should do those two back to back as a Xmas present for patreon. ;)

JVTrickypants

Jeez guys, you and your Kristin Chenowith spoiler.....at some point potentially on TWW in either a big or small role, maybe as an extra...who knows??

JVTrickypants

Since you mentioned their chemistry... Mark Harmon was on the podcast and they talked about how he got the role. He said he didn't have to read, but Aaron asked him to come in and meet with Allison for a bit, etc. Joshua Malina said, "Like a chemistry reading?" Mark said, "No, no. Let's get one thing clear, EVERYBODY has chemistry with Allison Janney whether they want to or not." lol

Seeee? Imagine if you watched two episodes all the time? How much fun would that be?

Sardonica61

If the Secret Service was telling me, "Hey, this guy is serious and he will try to kill you" I would gulp and nod my head and do anything they told me to do, and probably cling to those agents. I've never understood CJ's being resentful of having a protection detail. Having said that ... that scene when they get back is one of my favorites from the series: Don't call me ma'am. Don't call me ma'am! Don't call me Ms. Cregg This is not a western! They are just so good together. Something I did not pick up on in first watching that now really bugs me ... "It is freezing to cold in Helsinki" ... remember how big a deal that was? But it turns out it was Helsinki in MAY! Average temperature is in the 60's! Did they spent several MONTHS in Helsinki? It's just a sloppy detail. And again I'll say ... This is one of my favorite episodes.

Sardonica61

I was so relieved to never see Mandy again that I don't care. No shade to Maura Tierney ... the character just didn't work. Edit: Oops! (face palming) Thanks for correcting me ... I did mean Moira Kelly!

Youtalkingtome

What a daunting task. I'm kind of looking at the credits anxiously awaiting some celebrity so I can finally see who it is. Okay I won't look on the next episode.

Arek Schneyer

So I, personally, didn't feel that CJ's reaction to Simon Donovan was forced. It feels like an independent woman's reaction to a sudden restriction to her independence. She was resistant to the idea of the guard to begin with, and even though she agreed, after a long day, a long trip in Helsinki, I can fully imagine her snapping at him like that. But I was still a teenager when I saw this for the first time, and had a teenager's reaction to it, but I still don't really feel like it's unnatural.

Cristy

Great reaction as usual! I have to say when Ron Silver is in an episode it makes it that much better. Bruno is one of those characters who can rub you the wrong way but Ron is so good at playing him. And as you said, you trust his political advice because he sounds like he knows what he's talking about haha. The Margaret/Bruno interactions are some of my absolute favourites, so funny. Also, I've got to say Josh is so cheap that he can't even pay for a gift for Donna. Josh definitely needs to up his game.

JVTrickypants

I know this is early, but my fellow fellow Joe, Kevin, and us many other West Wing fans. I of course would love more episodes of this show per week, but I’ve come understand that’s not how the fellas wish to do this show. However, could we possible beseech you gentleman to give us a New Year present and release season 4 episode 1 and episode 1 part II at one time. It is absolutely one episode in two parts, but it is an absolute banger that deserves to have both parts watched together. At worst you’ll get to hear exactly why Ron Silver calls Sam a “freak.”

Martin Nicholls

Being as you've probably seen it by now, shout out to John Amos for the next episode, one of my favourite monologues in the entire series.. Also, by the way, so prescient again.

Weird Magic

Second this request - as Season 4 Episodes 1 & 2 aired as a 2-hour Premiere on the same day (9/25/02). It would be more realistic to how we originally watched it if you also did so during the same sitting.

Laura Room

My son and I binged Breaking Bad this summer and I totally agree about Jesse's girlfriend. My son flipped out and threw the remote control when that happened. Truly disturbing, but great television.

Paul T Hewes

the smash cut after the email has stuck with me for a long time. Him slamming his fist onto the table in frustration. Mark did a great job in his limited part.

Jack

I usually agree with you guys on most things, but have to say I disagree about broadcasting the conventions. They're party events - them being broadcast to such a degree on the news isn't public interest, it's party interest. The public demonstrate, from their viewing figures, that they have no interest - and of course they don't. Is it "news" that a party leader bigged up his own party and put down the other one? No. I don't know how things work in the USA these days, but the broadcast as described in this episode is basically days and days of free advertising for the two main parties. If they were broadcasting office holders, making announcements in their capacity as a member of the government, legislature, or whatever then sure. But they're broadcasting party apparatchiks, or office holders in their capacity as party apparatchiks. They shouldn't be broadcast unless something newsworthy happens, or the party pays for it to be broadcast as an advertisement.

Youtalkingtome

That's totally fair too! I think that when you're forced to be with someone you don't wanna be with for long stretches at a time, you're gunna go a little crazy.

Youtalkingtome

Sometimes in movies and television, flawed protagonists make it worthwhile. This show doesn't have that problem though lmao.

Daywalker

There's a two-parter coming in season 4 that aired back-to-back on the same day. Really hope you guys do back-to-back reactions for that one.

I posted this on YouTube, I meant to post on Patreon. I’ve been rewatching The West Wing for some Election Season escapism and I found you guys. FYI… Mad Men was the first series pickup by the network, and the first to air on AMC, six months later Breaking Bad premiered. The Walking Dead came two years later. AMC was fortunate since Matthew Weiner was hired to write on the last three seasons on The Sopranos based on his unsold Mad Men pilot, once The Sopranos wrapped he pitched it to HBO. But HBO wanted Chase to be the showrunner, so Weiner then pitched it to Showtime who also passed, AMC was looking for a distinct voice to start it’s foray into original programming and the rest is history. AMC’s first two series green-lit were Mad Men and Breaking Bad. The Walking Dead was number 3… the two key executives responsible have moved on and it shows because AMC has struggled outside of Breaking Bad and ‘Dead’ spin-offs.

Remember when the FCC wrote these rules there wasn’t cable television and 24 hour cable news. I worked at CNN out of college just before MSNBC AND FOX News launched and that now feels like 100 years ago. This gives you an idea of just how many networks covered the 2024 Democratic and Republican conventions: ABC, CBS, NBC, Scripps News, CNN, CNNe, FOX Business, FOX News, MSNBC, Newsmax, NewsNation, BBC News, PBS and that’s not including the 24 hour news networks CBS, NBC, and ABC have launched in recent years.
