Thanks for doubling up, because like you said with them split it doesn't hit as the 2 hour show/movie it should be as you'd have forgotten some things from when you watched it a week before.

Jake

You're spooking the hell out of the president!

The show is absolutely about the desire to serve. There was also an article the other day by the British writer who created Sherlock (and yes, the newer Doctor Who series, but I hate that show so try not to bring it up) talking about the UK "needing their own version of The West Wing." He was basically saying we get what we show on TV. Scandalous political shows and cruel/cutthroat people in office begets accepting the same in real life. Democrat or Republican, it was just nice when you could at least pretend that most of the people who worked in Washington at the end of the day honestly wanted to do good for society. I can't suspend my disbelief that much with some of the recent people. And yes, Mr. Smith and The West Wing do idealize the characters, but doesn't hurt to have something to shoot for as a country. As Bartlet said (total paraphrase), "The soldiers would throw their caps over the wall that was seemingly too high to climb so they would have no choice but to follow after."

Best thing I ever heard from a Trump supporter that kind of encapsulates he can say whatever he wants, was with Jordan Klepper and the supporter said, "I want to get to the bottom of why Barack Obama wasn't in The White House on 9/11! Nobody can give a good answer on that!"

I'm just recovering from Covid and this is my first day back being able to be on the computer, so sorry for the even more than usual comments...

Aaron

So excited to get phone notifications about the double postings today!

Also, the cast was always realized how good the show was when they could have somebody come off the bench like Lily Freaking Tomlin come on as a periodic guest star and not a lead.

This is probably my second favorite premier of the series, behind "In the Shadow of Two Gunmen" from season 2. I think just about every facet of the show hits, the acting, the guest stars, the advancement of plot points, the humor, the sincerity, it all works for me. There is a funny story of real life imitating art tied to this episode. Before the Kentucky Derby one year, NBC aired a vignette that plagiarized from the speech the President gives in this episode. The writer in question must not have been 'great', because he was fired shortly afterwards.

BARTLET FOR PRESIDENT!!!!! This is my safety show. When I can’t take any more I binge watch the West Wing💕 I loved Charlie. I realized he was a character on a tv show, but I always thought he would be the first black president. So much that it took me a couple of episodes to warm up to Dule’ character on Psych. Psych would be an excellent show to react to.

Cosmic Slice

This is up there with my favourite episodes of the show. The comedy bits were perfect and the dark bits tugged on your heartstrings. Not to mention how perfect that closing shot was. Toby flipping out in part one over the time zones never gets old. What gets me is that this season only picks up speed from here. :)

Weird Magic

....The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels tonight.... So reminiscent of "slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God". Goosebumps every time. Originally airing on September 25, 2002, '20 Hours in America: Part II' is Episode 2 of Season 4 of The West Wing. It is the 68th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.8, placing it as the #4 ranked episode of this season and #14 out of all the episodes shown so far.

I love it. It sounds cheesy but it makes me proud to be an American. We have a dark history but there is a lot that is commendable about this country. It makes me sad that we've truly lost our way as a nation and I hope that brighter times are ahead of us. Not just for me but for future generations.

Youtalkingtome

I can't wait to get to the next episode. Toby flipping out will live rent free in my head for the rest of the show.

This episode was such a unique and effective beginning leading up to Election Day. As they said, Election Day is six weeks away, and in 2002 they timed the episodes perfectly: the Election Day episode was broadcast on Wednesday, Nov. 6th, the day after the real election in the country. Of course, it wasn't a presidential election year, but the real and fictional campaigns reflected each other quite remarkably. When I first watched the series, I don't think I was as emotionally affected by it. But now that I'm two decades older, and I see everything that's happened since, I'm breaking down in nearly every episode. Of course, the moment Joe's eyes start welling up, that's when I lose it. Thanks, Joe.

Love this episode.. except... as a Hoosier I get distracted by the lack of logistics. Unionville is like next to Bloomington... which has an airport. Connersville is like half way between Indy and Ohio... no where near Unionville. Deerborn Co is basically a suburb of Cincinnati... again nowhere near Unionville. When they take the train and apparently get as far as Bedford... they are probably closer to Louisville than Indy... and way closer to Bloomington which again has an airport. Then... in Indy... they meet a guy from St. Louis that instead of driving the 5-6 hours it would take to get to South Bend... took a flight... not a direct flight... but one with a layover in Indy and not Chicago. I'm sorry... I know it's probably not that important to the episode... but it bugs me every time. BTW we have observed Daylight Savings since 2005... but when this was made most of Indiana did not... so part of the year we were eastern and part of the year we were central. Deerborn county being so closely tied to Cincinnati did indeed observe Daylight Savings as did counties near Louisville and Chicago. It could certainly get confusing.

I love that we first heard about Debbie way back in season 1 episode 3. It was just a name at the time -- Charlie mentions she sent him to Josh and Sam says "Debbie's got an eye for personnel." And Sorkin took that nugget and created this character. I also love that she was so reluctant to interview for the job when we first met her and now we see why, because she was afraid of repercussions from the guy who fired her.

Brian Harris

These two episodes are my favorite from the whole run of the show. The Josh/Toby/Donna stuff was brilliant. Enjoy Season 4, cuz 5 (the first Sorkin-less season) is a rrrrrough fucking ride. I actually stopped watching for a while, but they pulled it together in 6 and landed the plane in 7.

Skinny_Obelix

This second part has so many small moments of acting brilliance. If you go scene by scene, it's unheard of how every person had their moment. From Martin Sheen to the guy at the bar talking about putting his daughter through college.

Alex Lee

20 Hours in America are 2 of my favourite episodes. It's a perfect mix of light-hearted and devastating.

Devon Cooper

I just love how much you guys appreciate this show😎 it’s just master class. So many good things in both these episodes. You guys are really gonna love this season. But then again, I think you’ll love every season. Some folks criticize different seasons, but I love them all. Enjoying the ride!

Youtalkingtome

Thanks for clearing it up. It did seem like the middle of nowhere! Where we live there can be a whole lot of nothin lol.

Youtalkingtome

I look forward to Debbie being on the show. I hate that people like her old boss exist. Good for Charlie and good for Sorkin, he really crafted a special character.

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, I'm really trying to enjoy this and soak it all up. I do look forward to it though, because I wanna see how different it is.

Youtalkingtome

Thank you! We really do love it and we look forward to the Sorkinless seasons, just to see how different it is!

Mithroch

Oh... there is a whole lot of nothin between Indy and Unionville. Really between any decent sized city in Indiana is just farms. Even where I live up north... there's kind of an urban sprawl between South Bend and Elkhart... but then it just stops and becomes farmland again.

Balazs Foldes

You were absolutely right from the beginning: part 1 was the set up, and part 2 had the big things, the pay-off. Sorkin is so good with pay-offs. Noone plays those heart-strings as he does. The pipe bomb, the scene with CJ when she finished talking to the press; how Leo realizes something going on; Josh & Toby & Donna soaked, seeing what happened; the president's speech, with THAT music; Sam & Mallory; CJ & Anthony & Charlie; Donna and the guys sitting in the bar, Donna's wake-up speech; then Matt Kelly and his daughter & Notra Damme; and, indeed, the 'I work at the White House'. It's all a great series, masterfully written and directed and played, it just hits hard. And delivers the message so clear. Love it. BTW, we could see the screen this time (Part 1, it was only blackness in the background), this was working fine now. I could pause and re-synch, as needed, based on what was on the screen. Perfect!

Balazs Foldes

Wow, never thought to check a map. Interesting. :) I can easily imagine, Sorking chose the places more based on how the names sound, number of syllables and the generic sound, then actual location. :D

Balazs Foldes

I can just about imagine, how long Sorking had to work on getting that few sentences in the President's speech right. Even if he stole some of it, outright, as great writers do! ;) Probably he had to push through a painful all-nighter or something to get the writing just right in the end. And then, he just uses this pain to elevate Sam by giving his this brilliant, 10-second snippet of Conversaion ('In the car' - 'Freak.') to show: look, Sam is such a brilliant writer, he can put together something like THIS on the ride. Í And, contrasts very nicely, with Sam's next scene with Mallory, when he elevates Josh (world-class political mind, I did not know he was smarter then me), by showing that our brilliant Sam still finds a task like staffing the President in the Oval Office extremely hard, but so rewarding. Masterful writing, building awe in the viewer. To pick up a despicable and looked-down-on job, such as politicians, and show them as inspiring and uplifting. That's a job for a writer, for real.

Mithroch

I might not have ever thought about it.. but the guy visiting Notre Dame being at an Indy airport bugged me so much that the next time I watched, I paid attention to where they were. I thought maybe I missed something and they had ended up in South Bend.

Sardonica61

I do the same thing. Often late at night I just switch over to the West Wing. I know I'll laugh, and tear up, but I won't feel hopelessness and despair. Never thought to call it a "safety show" though, so, thanks for that!

Sardonica61

I decided to come to over to Patreon when Mrs. Landingham died and you said ... I mean, I knew what was coming and I still tear up every single time ... you said, "I can't believe they killed Mrs. Landingham" and you were wiping tears away. That was the exact reaction I had the first time I watched it. And I thought, I've finally found other people who love this show the way that I do! Every time you guys post a new reaction I am so happy!

Sardonica61

These are the kind of details that make me crazy. In an NCIS episode, one character was headed from the DC office to fly to his alma mater ... at John's Hopkins in Baltimore! They USE THE SAME AIRPORT! BWI? Baltimore-Washington International! Aargh! On reddit some of the WW fans who know DC really well go crazy in certain episodes when the motorcade is going in the opposite direction that they say it's going.

Cristy

The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels tonight. Gah, that line gets me every time. And then you include that version of "I Don't Like Mondays" and it just brings on the tears. Again, the West Wing uses music so beautifully to tug at those emotional heartstrings. I really do love these episodes, definitely second only to the season 2 opening for me. I think what Donna said was so true about Josh and Toby only focusing on what they think is important, which isn't to the normal person on the street trying to make a living and get by. I feel like spending so much time in the West Wing these characters can get very insulated. So, it is good to see them out in "the real world" for a change.

Jim Miller

That final shot wasnt them walking up to the White House. they were approaching the Lincoln Memorial, which means where they had the shuttle drop them off was the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery.

Youtalkingtome

I often think that too. This doesn't matter to the average Joe. I let it go because that's not the focus of the show, but man the absolutely nail it by addressing that. They cover all their bases and the show is that much better because of it.

Roland Cooke

I'm not at all into torture porn, but this did make me go back and watch J&K react "live" to the news of Mrs Landingham's death. Pretty amazing, jumped me straight back those twenty years. And this is why the guys are great to follow, because they not only had a fully human reaction but they also then had a great discussion about the story and where it would be going.

Weird Magic

I didn't have a problem with Seasons 5, 6 or 7. People that love Sorkin (rightfully so in most cases) like to say the other seasons weren't as good. But it really is in the eye of the beholder. and i feel any drop in quality is negligible. Lets not forget, it wasn't some rube that took over - it was John Frickin Wells - another stud in the industry
